Cassandra Wilson with her deep toned jazz infused voice really does this song justice, amazing version

this has to be one of my favorite songs...ever..i remember being 13 and listening to the lyrics- they don't make songs like this anymore-it all faded away in 1994..........

James007magic, your vivid & loving descriptions of life & music are making my heart bleed & weep. At the age of 7, I realized God made a bewildering choice when He plunked an old Celtic soul on Canadian soil, to be raised in the bosom of Chinese immigrants. I look Asian, speak English & French, yet feel utterly Irish; Pete McCarthy wrote "McCarthy's Bar" for folks like me. Your own lovely and eloquent writings are a balm to my imagination & soul; you deserve the beauty you're surrounded by.

And let the fighting begin, Who did it best, Jack or U2? I loved this song before it was cool. Jack has a very unique style which changes the whole colour of the song when he performs it. The two interpretations are incomparable, and are exactly that...interpretations. U2 is legend, and Jack never hesitates to put his own style into everything he touches. Now lets all shake hands and play nice.

A good song is a good song. Period. I am NOT a U2 fan, I actually only just heard the Jack White version today. Kudos to U2 for writing this, and kudos to Jack White for making this song his art in his own way. That's what art IS...interpretation. Thank God for artists. The world would be dead without them.

More proof of U2's greatness. "Love is Blindness" is completely buried on side 2 of their 1991 masterpiece Achtung Baby-- and it might be the best song on the album.

Where can you find such poetic beauty more beautiful than "Love is drowning in a deep well. All the secrets and no one to tell"? Their strained relationship and what what was going in their personal lives actually helped shape such a gem of an album which makes you want to listen to it over and over again.

Personally I think the song is about obsession and love gone wrong. That line 'A little death without mourning, no call and no warning/Baby a dangerous idea that almost makes sense' absolutely chills me to the core.

Maybe their greatest song, always wondered why it wasn't released as a single or gotten more attention. Same with Acrobat. Was disappointed when they didn't play this on their last tour.

I'm a year older & I stll see U2 as one of my favorite bands! Personally I think they're one of the very few bands from the 80's/present that are TIMELESS! I also enjoy big band era music & have listened to all types just as you have, but in my opinion there is nothing good out today. Most seem to sound too much alike or simply are not good. The best music ever made was in the 1960-70's from disco to rock & others. U2 is a rare exception.

Amen! What brotherly love they have for watch other. It is inspiring and amazing. It makes me want to forgive people I usually would be ok with never having in my life again. Yeah They have an anointing and when the express affection for one another it pours out even more.

First of all- the song just smashes the system :) The both versions make it perfect. It depends on the mood or certain situation. U2 performance is in that deep tone so that someone can think of easily. Jack's cover is for idealist who just need great amount of energy...for a guy who is dramatic, and dramatically goes through his destroyed relationship. Artist decides how to perform we just receive the ready stuff :->

U2s greatest album, by far, was Achtung Baby, and on that album the 2 greats songs are Acrobat and Love Is Blindess. I thought that from the first time I played that album. So figures that neither of those songs got any radio play that I know of. This song gives me chills

Thanks Kerawin, your writings on this are pretty impressive. Yes I'm still living in Dublin and by chance I ended up buying a house next door to one in which some of the Joshua tree songs were conceived - its a pretty inspirational place - in the foot hills of the Dublin mountains, where fairy stories seem plausable and one can take walks at night and look out at the Dublin city lights screaming away to the horizon..

Most of the tracks on Achtung Baby were written in reference to Edge and the breakdown of his marriage at the time. In this song (during the guitar solo) he gets it all out- and according to Bono, actually snaps a couple of guitar chords in the process- if you listen carefully you can actually here them snap.
@james007magic17 жыл бұрын
My theory is that the song was inspired by a famous scene in the film 'The Snapper'. However this song evokes a powerful memory for me of when I first moved to Dublin in 1994 and I went to a pub in Temple Bar called 'the Crane', which was so dimly lit the patrons were simply dark profiles, occasionaly moving amongst the darkness and shadows. And then this song came on and having had more than a few pints of Guinness, I felt my self sinking back into the wall behind me..

I absolutely adore your retelling of your experience; it's seductively transporting, as well as incredibly evocative in its atmosphere and situation. Although I don't believe I ever found myself in the Crane, I picture myself late in the night at a darkened Duke (my favourite in Dublin), listening to the song while gently inebriated -- and can thus enjoy your experience vicariously. Thank you for that. And you're living in Dublin? Oh, the envy continues to pour. ;-)

The great thing about u2, u can se the text in another way too. This song could also be about the Edge and his wife. "Love is clockworks and cold steel, fingers too numb to feel." Guitar strings are made out of steel, and when you play too much, your fingers will go numb. "The thread is ripping, the knot is slipping" - when you marry, you tie the knot, if the knot slips, the marriage slips. So The Edge spending too much time away from his wife for his music could be the culprit.

Also. Any state of mind which sees through materialistic eyes of the ego judgement, will never find any real answer, the very fact that he wanted to ask the question takes him further from the truth! They are DIFFERENT that does not make one better or one worse, it makes them different aspects of creation.
