My first U2 concert I ever went to I was totally blown away by the use of 40 to end the concert. It was such a moving experience to hear everyone sing it even as we left the building. People either sang the song or were walking silently. When a rock band and it’s music so emotionally impacts it’s fans and listeners they have truly transcended music

I saw them at the Sphere on December 8th. My wife is the huge fan, seeing them at the Sun Bowl decades ago. I’m a passive fan, meaning I’ve liked the music but never went out of my way to see them. I am now a huge U2 fan. The Sphere is an incredible venue, but U2 made it an unfiorgetable experience. I’m almost 57, and seen many shows, but this is up there.

I agree. the Red Rocks album. The Unforgettable Fire tour, Dublin June '85, a great concert and a great version of this as it all wound down; great. Another two years, Dublin, June '87, Croke Park, Dublin, they came home, number one America that spring, what a gig and this same tune, as us folk listened..... only great.

I was there, what a gig. I counted down the weeks, the days, the hours, Live Aid was only three weeks away, I knew they were going to carry it off - they did.

There's something so special about "40" live and closing the show. The first time I experienced "40" was in 1987 at the Omni in Atlanta. To be one with everyone else singing it with all our hearts and continuing to sing it as we left the building out into the parking lot is an experience that you gotta have in order to truly understand it's power and the power of U2. Definitely a high point in my life. "40" will always be very special to me because of that. Thank you for sharing this and thank you U2.

My first show was in May of 83’ at The Tower Theatre Upper Darby PA, I was 17 , they closed the show with 40 and 90% of the crowd sang it all the way back to our vehicles 🎶

June 1985, and again, in June 1987, Dublin's Croke Park, two just great gigs and us leaving this song echoing in our ears..... look up an RTE documentary, "Wide awake in America", it filmed this song being sung and foursome leaving the stage. I was down in that crowd, what a concert! !985, jayney that's coming up on 40 years ago.......

I saw them close the Anaheim show in 2005 with 40. It was the show immediately before a gravely ill John Paul II passed and the band had been paying tribute to the Holy Father all evening. Tears when they closed with this. And then disbelief and disheartenment when the bandwagon, fair-weather,, let's be seen at the show "fans" actually booed when they realized U2 would not be returning to the stage.

I, like you have been a fan for decades and have seen U2 live now 6 times. I was at first skeptical about Bram drumming with the band and was not sure about going to see the show. I of course changed my mind and went to see the concert on December 16, my birthday and the supposed last concert of the residency. Even though I travelled from Canada and paid an astronomical amount, it was so worth it that I probably will never see another U2 show again… except if they do one again at Slane Castle. I’m sorry that you were not able to witness the magic. However the KZbin footage is very good at conveying the essence of that experience. Blessings to you, the band and the universe. Song can connect, heal and unite!

It's great to see an artist doing a REAL encore (because 99% of the 'encores' are planned from the beginning) I go to a lot of concerts and have only seen that 4 times so far: Springsteen did 'Jersey Girl' in Vienna 2009, because a girl wore a shirt with that song name on it The other 3 were famous German bands: Hosen, Onkelz, Ärzte

The only song that I am aware of where Edge and Adam switch instruments. Adam on guitar. Edge on bass. I’ve been a U2 fan for 40 years. But I only noticed it 2 years ago watching Yahweh/40 closing out the Vertigo tour Chicago DVD. I thought I was seeing things at first.

Yep! Adam wasn’t in the studio when they recorded “40”. So Edge played both bass and guitar then. And because of that Edge and Adam always switch instruments when they play “40” live.
