We sat out there, in the rain, waiting, waiting, waiting...there were supposed to be two opening bands (The Alarm and The Divinyls) neither could take the stage. I remember people coming out and dumping vats of cola on the stage to make it sticky and then after what I think was a two or three hour delay the long awaited moment. My best friend and I were only 16 at the time and it was pure magic when the announcer came out and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, a warm Red Rocks welcome please. From Dublin, Ireland....U2!!!!! I still get goosebumps on my goosebumps when I think about it and I am almost 55 years old.

I’m 82 and was preparing for a Bible study class and a commentary from “Working Preacher” stated the connection between the Psalm 40 and U2’s “40,”. I’ve been playing this version constantly ever since. Never to old to appreciate great music.

In Cardiff they kept going off stage, the crowd sang 40 and they came on performed a song, went off, crowd did the same for another few more songs, they then finally went off for about 10 minutes, crowd kept singing 40 and they came out one last time and performed 40, concert had overrun by about 40 minutes. Leaving the stadium was amazing, everybody still singing 40, greatest concert of my life❤❤❤❤❤

Later on they modified the song and made it longer with a somewhat modified bass riff for a long coda. Two of the best renditions were from the original Joshua Tree tour. One from the Tempe, AZ concert in December of '87 which became an outtake for the Rattle & Hum movie and the other from a few months prior at a concert in Paris, I think around May of '87. Both are on KZbin and worth a listen. Pure awesomeness.

Great bass melody. When they recorded it, they needed one more song for the album, Adam had already left the studio for the evening, so Edge played bass. When they went out on tour, Adam never really learned the bass melody for it, so they switched instruments. He knows it now, but in tradition, they still switch instruments.

The final phrase many will see and FEAR is from KKV of Psalm 40. Shortly after the Red Rocks show Bono and Edge changed it to many will see and HEAR. Applying to more of a rock audience but the Bible version concludes: Many will see and fear and believe in the Lord. Artistic license I suppose. Either way one of U2’s best and perfectly bookends an album named: WAR. that starts with a song called Sunday Bloody Sunday. From how long MUST we sing this song to how long TO sing this song! Brilliant!

I figured out how to do this bass line in 1986. One of Adam Clayton's best bass lines of any U2 song. Over the years I have tried to play it in the bands I have been in. I have had no luck with the last excuse being the lead singer in our band had a really bad experience singing it in a church he belonged to. Needless to say that band didn't work out. I am joining another band and hoping THIS would be the one!!!

This band, this song, have always been so everything…I remember being unrelenting in sharing them with classmates in the ‘80’s I was listening to them while watching the rocket launch of the space shuttle Challenger… when they came to my town, Baton Rouge, LA, Ritchie and I were there, and after we went to Southdowns, our stomping grounds - the DJ played them exclusively all night Exclusively It was one of the best nights of my life
