This past June, PG traveled to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia to catch U2’s eXPERIENCE & iNNOCENCE Tour. Before the band’s soundcheck, John Bohlinger hung with Dallas Schoo, who has been taking care of The Edge’s ever-changing collection for over 30 years.
The Edge tours with 45 guitars. He performs with 18 to 20 different guitars every show and has a backup for every one of them. The Edge does not endorse any string company but has Dallas Schoo constantly experimenting with different brands and gauges for each guitar and tuning.
In 1978, on a trip to the United States with his family, a seventeen-year-old Edge bought this 1976 Gibson Explorer. This guitar was there for the birth of U2 and has been part of nearly every tour and session since. Edge now owns eleven ’76 Explorers and currently tours with three of them. They are all stock and nearly identical. And to be clear, Dallas Schoo is always on the look for more.
Fender approached The Edge about a signature model based on some of his old favorite Strats. This namesake model features a large headstock, a Dimarzio FS-1 bridge pickup, and two custom staggered Fat ’50s Fender single-coil pickups. The strap on was designed by The Edge.

He was complaining about having to tune backstage with all the amps roaring. I guess I'm a little confused why he would use a headstock tuner instead of just plugging into a tuner pedal.

I absolutely love The Edge his tone and eagerness to always do something different for a song is incredible... considering the more songs U2 writes the more difficult it is for him to re-create those sounds live for each song. The Edge is incredible the very meaning of professional guitarist, his work with guitar effects is just mind blowing.

True story: Two years ago, riding my bike past a small country market north of Boulder, CO. In the parking lot is a 65-66 Shelby Mustang. My jaw drops. Being a vintage Ford nut I have to stop and talk to the owner. He comes out a minute later and I start pestering him about the car. I asked where he found it and he said he and his band were traveling through Georgia (???...somewhere in the southern U.S.) a few years back and saw it for sale locally so he bought it. "What's the name of your band?", I asked. "I belong to a band called U2," he said. "I'm the Edge's guitar tech, my name is Dallas." My jaw drops a second, third, and fourth time. Trying to act as normal as I could I muttered something about a Squire Strat I found at a garage sale the day before. We chatted for about 10 minutes. Mr. Schoo was very accommodating and patient with all my questions. He's like the next door neighbor you can share a beer with...and he has great taste in cars.

Jim Morrison's "The Blue Lady" - www.streetmusclemag.com/features/car-features/on-the-trail-of-the-blue-lady-jim-morrisons-lost-1967-shelby-gt500/ You may know cars, however you're a bit fuzzy on punctuation. In every case, you were wanting to make these words plural, but instead you made these words possessive. "Cobra's" - no apostrophe. This car may "own", but it can't own any possessions! Also, since you put quotation marks around Cobra, you should've done the same for Mustang (which was correct with the "s"). "Believe Morrison's in the video's is the King version." - "Morrison's" - OK!, but "video's" - no apostrophe "70's-80's" - no apostrophes "Tiger's" - no apostrophe

@ChockHolocaust 5 ай бұрын
It's because most guitarists know that his playing doesn't require a lot of actually really skillful guitar chops; basically without a digital delay pedal - or in his early days a WEM Copycat tape echo - he'd be screwed. You can try this out for yourself; get an electric guitar, plug in a digital delay pedal to the signal chain, choose a long delay setting then palm mute a few basic chords and you have his sound. This is because doubled up echo guitar sounds very pleasing to the ear and instantly make you sound better. Part of the reason for U2 making it was because WEM Copycats were expensive back in the day and there were no digital delay pedals at that time, so there weren't many beginner band guitarists who could afford one, so if you did have one, it gave you a pretty unique sound among the local bands in your particular town. This doesn't mean the Edge has no talent at all, because you do have to go somewhere with that long delay sound and make it into a song, but it's certainly not an example of the best red-hot guitar playing ever if you switch off the effect and hear what is actually being strummed or picked. So I must admit that I occasionally find myself amusedly thinking he must wake up in the morning and find it difficult to believe he's still getting away with it lol. But good luck to him for managing it I say, although I bet if there were ten guitarists at a party and an acoustic guitar being passed around for people to bang a tune out on, he wouldn't be the best entertainer there. I actually did have a WEM Copycat which I bought second hand when I fortuitously saw one in a junk shop window for I think about sixty quid if I recall correctly, and they didn't really know what it was and what it was really worth. I had to quickly sell a ton of my LPs at a pawn shop to get the money for it, and quickly too, before someone else in the know snapped it up, but it made me sound a lot better than most other guitarists, that I can tell you. It eventually got stolen from a rehersal room which I was really pissed off about at the time, but they also nicked my 1969 Fender Telecaster Thinline and I am still pissed off about that to this day! These days I play solo at gigs and usually with just an acoustic guitar and me singing, so not many effects at all other than a bit of amp reverb for the vocals, but back in the day that WEM Copycat on my guitar rig, and the fact that I had a PA system too, was like a magic free pass which allowed me to join any band I liked and I'm willing to bet the Edge had a similar experience. And yes, I have seen him play live at a gig and know he can at least play a bit; it was at a small jam-packed gig in a sweaty club long before they'd really made it to success. I was so close to him and the rest of the band that his unclipped string ends on the headstock of his guitar were in danger of taking my eyes out as they swung around all over the place lol. It was a good gig and I do like many U2 tracks even though Bono is undeniably a pretentious twat, but he's a talented one for sure.

I used to work at the Starbucks in south Philly and when U2 came through years back some guy came in wearing a Vertigo jacket with the laminate and everything. I struck up a conversation since it was obvious he was on their crew and he asked if I was going to the show or if I was a fan. I told him (honestly) that I didn't listen to a lot of U2 despite respecting them, but the Edge always had an unmistakable tone. Anyhow, it was Dallas I was talking to. He lit up, told me some stories about finding the settings with the Edge for "Mysterious Ways" and some other songs and was a super friendly guy. As he left he gave me a one of the Edge's picks when he left with a tray of drinks he'd picked up. I hate to say that I later ebayed the pick so I could buy a guitar that just happened to be an Explorer. Anyhow, if you see this, Thank you Dallas! I still have my Explorer a decade on and you helped facilitate that

It is so hard to play U2 accuretaly.. I guess you can achieve a similar feeling (which aint satisfying for me), but to be precise you have to spend serious amounts of money and have the knowledge to use them properly. I recently acquired the Edge Deluxe amp and his Stratocaster (the signature model). I added a MXR deluxe analog delay (I already had the DD7 and the TC Flashback that I couldnt get to do the job). I also use the Line 6 Helix FX to create the more complex sounds. Still I havent found what I'm looking for. He is instantly recognizable with his sound but its more than one sound. Every song has a different setup.(Many guitars, some amps - but I can't fit more amps at home -without risking brain injury from my wife..., and racks that I dont know what they do but if he uses them , they must be important. I dont aim to buy racks for home use though). My point is that accurate ideas for setups and rig combinations from experts can be really useful. So a help or advice from someone experienced would be a joy-giving situation! So any hints are more than welcome! Nice to talk to you John Frondelli (is it an Italian name?) Have a nice day!

Pretentious shredders & blues purists (ie Bonamassa, though I like him) love to hate on Edge, idk why. He's invented an entire style of guitar playing, sold millions of records & is objectively an iconic guitarist. Edge & U2 all started off super poor, all the money & success they've had is from talent & hard work, they didn't have rich parents or industry connections to get them fast-tracked to fame. He's earned his success & deserves the acclaim.

@anthonysclafani3963
@anthonysclafani3963 5 жыл бұрын
+BluesLicks101 chill dude. I mentioned Bonamassa because he's called pedal users (ie Edge, the king of effects) lazy. He said and I quote: "It’s insulting to people who spent 35 years playing and learning-like a lot of players-and we continue to work at it! These guys can barely play a chord but call themselves 'soundscapists.'" That's a verbatim quote from him, so they're not at all "false allegations." There's many different styles of playing guitar, not everyone likes or wants to play pentatonic blues scales and that's ok. Neither is better than the other, just different styles. He also has a whole section on his website that sells pedals, and he himself has multiple signature pedals, so it's pretty hypocritical. I like Joe, he seems like a nice guy who loves guitar. But his attitude here is both condescending and hypocritical
@crimsun7186
@crimsun7186 5 жыл бұрын
The issue with Edge is that he is unable to function without effects and many of the lines he plays wouldn't sound the same without them. There's a difference between using effects and depending on them. Edge depends on effects.

I generally prefer when it’s the guitarist himself/herself that do the RigRundown... except here! Don’t get me wrong, I love The Edge, he’s a very underrated guitarist in my honest opinion (personally one of my Top 10 guitarist and a real tone genius), but due to the complexity of his rig, the history of each instruments and amount of tech work required for this kind of rig, I do believe it was perfect to have his tech Dallas to do this video. It was delightful and I didn’t see the whole hour go, I could have watch one more hour... easily! For instance, I recall the FX racks used to be even bigger before they use the Fractals, so I would have loved to see how they use them and what they did (and didn’t) replace with them. I know, I know... geek stuff, but hey, that’s why we’re all here, right?! Anyway, thanks to Dallas and PG - another awesome video!
