Lyrics:
Summer stretching on the grass
Summer dresses pass
In the shade of a willow tree
Creeps a-crawling over me
Over me and over you
Stuck together with God's glue
It's gonna get stickier too.
It's been a long hot summer
Let's get under cover
Don't try too hard to think
Don't think at all.
I'm not the only one
Staring at the sun
Afraid of what you'd find
If you take a look inside.
Not just deaf and dumb
I'm staring at the sun
Not the only one
Who's happy to go blind.
There's an insect in your ear
If you scratch it won't disappear.
It's gonna itch and burn and sting
Do you wanna see what the scratching brings!
Waves that leave me out of reach
Breaking on your back like a beach.
Will we ever live in peace?
'Cause those that can't do often have to
And those that can't do often have to preach
To the ones staring at the sun
Afraid of what you'll find if you took a look inside.
Not just deaf and dumb, staring at the sun
I'm not the only one who'd rather go blind.
Intransigence in all around
Military's still in town
Armour plated suits and ties
Daddy just won't say goodbye
Referee won't blow the whistle.
God is good but will he listen?
I'm nearly great but there's something missing.
I left it in the duty free,
Oh, though you never really belonged to me.
You're not the only one staring at the sun
Afraid of what you'd find if you stepped back inside.
I'm not sucking my thumb, staring at the sun
Not the only one who's happy to go blind.

Nobody makes a guitar sit in the song like this anymore. So many different textures and tones. The Edge has left a ledger for all future guitarists to build from when everyone is ready to revisit U2's music in the coming years. His sound still is more modern and unique than how ive heard guitar being utilized in pop music for many years. Theres so much unexplored territory for guitar as an instrument, and our technology is so much greater and more advanced than it was when the Edge was laying down these takes, and look at what he was able to achieve. Imagine what we can do now, if the right person pushes the envelope.

@@markmcauleymcauley9287 completely true. But, and it's a big but, Pop, as an album, is not coherent. It just seems like a few songs that happened to crop up at the same time in a "we've got to put out an album, oh, this'll do" sort of a way. Even the band admit that Pop was never finished to their satisfaction.

The media and critics couldn't get past the glitz; people that actually listened tend to appreciate the songwriting and craft on that album. I've always liked Pop, but now if I reach for a U2 record off the shelf I'd listen to Pop more often than probably three-quarters of the band's output. And I still love every record until No Line.

I used to work in a hotel as a receptionist like 4 years ago, we have a u2’s bossa nova playlist at the lobby. I liked u2 2000s songs but not the old ones, don’t know why, shame on me, but there was a versions of Staring at the sun, bad, one, Sunday Bloody Sunday, etc. So that i started to sing then every time; So one day I decided to check all the original version of the songs and got impressed by all of them. The guests used to sing the song and some of them asked me about the music.

This song would be one of their best hits if only it was on an album that was easier to appreciate.

Does it matter? I appretiated Pop, played it like crazy, don't care if others missed it. The music is out there forever, people stumble across it one day.

PopMart was the first concert I saw of them back in the 90's. I can remember it like it was yesterday. Though I have seen them perform loads of times since it still remains my favourite concert.

I thought Pop was a fantastic album the first time I heard it. I was stunned at the beating Bono had to have given his voice box. All take... the guy sings his guts out for everything anyway, but this album justadee shake my head wondering how he did it.

Pop deserves more love, especially from the band because they've pretty much abandoned it in the live setting.

I'm so happy the POP videos are getting remastered, on it's release it must have stayed in the player for about a year, anything else couldn't get in. It really is a great album, I saw them on this tour at Leeds as well I think the price was about £35, what a good price to get your mind blown for 2 and half hours.

My favourite U2 album by a long way. Had more style and colour and humour than anything they did before or since. And not a dud song on the album. If they’d continued down this road they would have remained relevant.
