What a magnificent movie from Martin Scorsese! That last line makes one think of the generations who have gone before us, like my parents who passed away a few years ago. Their world and all that they knew is gone. Once I am gone too, it will be as though they never existed; only forgotten names on a forgotten tombstone.

Every repeating four measures of the main musical melody seems to symbolize the passing of eras & people, come & gone, again and again, past, present, and future. You could play this music to people in the year 3050, and they would still understand its timeless poetic meaning.
