I often sway between "The Unforgettable Fire" and "Surrender" as my 2 favorite U2 songs. I was in college at FIT in Melbourne, Florida when The Unforgettable Fire album was released. I had the privilege of seeing U2 4 times in one week on that tour all over the state of Florida - all of them being general admission gigs - which means, once you got through the gates, you rushed towards the stage to get the best seats you could find. I got to meet Bono twice after the shows in Hollywood, FL on that tour. Drinking Miller Lites with Bono behind the venue while sitting on the hood of my Jeep - memories I'll never forget!

This one is up there on my desert island playlist. I love the atmosphere it portrays i love the video for it, and it came out the same time as Grace under pressure. At the age of 20, I wore the hell out of these records

Not to get emotional, lol. U2 hits me the same way alot of my Rush music does, even though there different. Love it!

UF was my introduction to U2 when I was in college. 500 or so listens of the album. I worked my way backwards and forwards through most if their catalog. I really like your music theory discussions, too, it broadens my listening experience.

Nice song w very good melody and excellent parts that add so much color and vibe like you said. Especially subtle but super effective is how Larry Mullen is hitting the floor tom with each snare hit, to give it that body and nice oomph in his basic but musical groove in the song. Not much guitar here, but the washes of echo and reverb add nicely to the overall feel. Bass is really nice on this, simple and sparse but mature and musical. One of my friends says this song sounds "too cheesy 80s" to him, but that was the time and the song itself transcends any production values of the day. Another example of just great songwriting without having to throw the kitchen sink in. And yes, a nice breather from listening to prog sometimes!

I like this one. Nice changes, nice performances and the production really shines. It's only fault is that it could have been longer. But this entire album succeeds because it's one of those cases where the label backed the group expanding their ambition by hiring big name producers, but the band also stepped up and delivered in the songwriting department.

Better to sit in it, than step in it. Seriously, re: prog and Yes, I tend to like prog. comps that have distinct song sections and qualities that meld/interact. It sometimes seems that some prog and jazz comps create musical congestion. U. Fire is the opposite and is filled with ambient and emotive comps. These are fluid and flow naturally for the listener.
