The song's lyrics describe a fictional conversation between Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot. The first verse discusses The Last Supper (We ate the food and drank the wine); the second is about Judas identifying Jesus with a kiss on the cheek in the Garden of Gethsemane (In the garden I was playing the tart I kissed your lips and broke your heart); and the final is about Judas' suicide after being overwhelmed with guilt and sadness (Waves of regret, waves of joy, I reached out for the one I tried to destroy)
thanks to wikipedia ;)

I was 12 when Achtung Baby came out, The Fly played on repeat on MTV. I was hooked. Bono was a rock God. They were the epitome of cool, during college rock radio and early 90’s alternative. I fell in love, hard. And my older brother took me to see the Zoo TV tour. Wow what a night. I will never forget it. I have seen them many times since but nothing, NOTHING, comes close to Zoo TV. And most people don’t get it. They don’t “get” Bono or U2. Until you have felt the loss of a parents at age 14/15 then you won’t catch it when Bono mentions it. I got it. The pain & loss you always carry with you from a young age. They are my first real love, they are the soundtrack to my life, songs that got me through parents deaths, divorce, betrayal, hope for the future, Joy, sadness, pain, new love, you name it. They were there. This is U2 for me. And what’s so great is U2 always plays these 2 songs back to back. Almost like they did it just for me (they obviously did not). Until the end of the world has been my favorite song since Achtung baby came out. Knowing it was about Judas betraying Jesus. Betrayal in general. Then New Years Day, he says, I will be with you again. The day my father died and we had to make a long trip home since he died in another state. My dad & I would watch the stars together. So all the ride home, I listened to New Year’s Day, I will be with you again and longed for my dad. I was 14. Then fast forward a few years ago when my husband at the time of 20 years wanted a divorce. Boy I really understood until the end of the world then. U2 helped me through again. btw first husband looked like Larry, 2nd husband looks like Bono. 🥰

Bono’s true command of the stage and crowd is truly uplifting and inspirational. The raw energy he brings to get and keep the crowd excited is truly immense. The end of the song with him and edge battling each other and Bono’s complete live and respect for him and the rest of the band is something many bands have ever been able to attain much less keep for over 43 years. So glad I saw this tour at Dodger Stadium with my future wife of over 30 years now was a magical experience. Too bad age and time have took that that energy away but still a phenomenal band. One of the greatest ever bands.

I’ve always loved Adam’s bass playing - from the very early days (1977/1980when the band called him king of fake (since he used all the right and cool musician lingua-words and had an amplifier but may not have been a virtuoso/when it comes to technic playing or even keeping the right tempo or key) and since the time when the music critics slagged him off for his slap bass playing on the October album (maybe I loved his playing even more back then). To me he has always been The King of Cool. And I’ve always seen U2 as a unit, a band in its real meaning - where everyone is just as important, the sum is greater than it’s different parts and who are built on friendship. Not a group of musicians chosen by some music company talent people through auditions where the auditions are more of a competition to get the people who fits the record company’s mould(or is it mold?) and will sell the most records. (I know U2, like many bands, got together via an audition - but it was via Larry and a note he put up in the school they attended and he had seen some of them before)

Tara Greene I was there too. Remember Bono had broken his arm in Tucson a day or 2 before. Everybody in Ariz. was pissed they publicly supported the Mecham recall. U2 was truly using their iconic rock status to bring awareness of injustices still running amuck in the world whenever they could. It was so refreshing to see and hear in those times. Our generation did care about things other than fortune and fame even if we didn't say it or show it like artists from 60's generation. Achtung Baby was the equivalent of Boston's self titled album. Every song on the album became part of radio stations playlist at one time or another. That kind of thing never happens nowadays, no matter how good or popular the artist is. It would be 1 of my "If I could only listen or own 5 albums list. I always felt it went unappreciated by many then I remembered hearing a couple of other artists, Lars Ulrich from Metallica being one, mentioning it as best albums made from first to last song. If released today it would still be a top ten seller and critically acclaimed.

el mejor álbum de U2 "Acthung Baby" cambio radical en su música, Rock Electrónico, Rock alternativo, y algo de Techno .

IMO.....this was U2 at the very height of their powers. I saw 2 shows on the Zoo TV Tour. Just awesome. I also think Achtung Baby was their best overall album,. But it makes sense, the lads were what in their early 30's here, so their musicianship was refined and developed and the songs were fantastic.

The peak of U2. Saw them live in 1983 and an additional 24 times. Daughter only caught 12 shows. During this song I was rubbing Bono's leg in a nonsexual way. U2 fan club was the ticket!
