I could just imagine an ‘honest’ man who stood up to his oppressors sitting on the docks with his lover in Dublin an hour before the boat departed to the hinterland. Beautiful, Edge. An honest man deserves an honest wage.

[the lyrics] Hold me now, oh hold me now Till this hour has gone around And I'm gone, on the rising tide For to face Van Diemen's land It's a bitter pill, I swallow here To be rent from one so dear We fought for justice and not for gain But the magistrate sent me away Hold me now, oh hold me now Till this hour has gone around And I'm gone, on the rising tide For to face Van Diemen's land Now kings will rule and the poor will toil And tear their hands as they tear the soil But a day will come in this dawning age When an honest man sees an honest wage Hold me now, oh hold me now Till this hour has gone around And I'm gone on the rising tide For to face Van Diemen's Land

Still missing the last verse!! "Still the gunman rules, And widows pray, A scarlet cloak, Now a black beret, They thought that blood and sacrifice, Could from death bring forth a life"
@hussainbinshamsuddin94884 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for that last verse. Would you know where I can get the full original song. Many people don't really appreciate the song as much as the ought to because they either didn't pay attention to the lyrics or understand the history of the average, innocent Irish who suffered from the unnecessary political and religious divide.

@@lizzzzzzzz Some 30 years ago I used to be able to play the guitar and sing this song by heart until my bunch of co-workers all grew familiar with it. It’s been 25 years since I stop that logistics job and went into architectural works and with that I stopped playing the guitar. Miss all those days. The other favourite was All I Want Is You.

I have the u2 song book from that era and apparently there is a fourth verse although as far as i'm aware it only exists in writing. "Still the gunman rules, And widows pray, A scarlet cloak, Now a black beret, They thought that blood and sacrifice, Could from death bring forth a life"

@@afishionado I have only heard one recording of it, on a friends concert bootleg tape in the 90s.I wish I had taken a copy. They should play it. The lyrics are in my Rattle and Hum Liner notes. I suspect they were seen as too controversial.
