Eat your heart out, Bon Jovi and The Police, "With Or Without You" is the DEFINITIVE Top 40 rock song of the mid 80's. I've always felt that "Beautiful Day" masterfully echoes how WOWY builds from a hushed, restrained beginning, to a soaring, expressive middle, to a cathartic comedown release at the end. And the conflict between what is known to be bad versus how good that "badness" makes one feel is timeless. Heck, I've done my fair share of pining for the unattainable through the years (usually for a person I can't live with or without, oddly enough) and this was/is the theme song for each of those moments.

What fascinates me about Bono's lyrics on songs like this is his insight. A stable marriage from a pretty young age that still stands. He seemingly hasn't experienced (I could be wrong) the heartbreak of love loss. Not discounting his parental loss BTW but his lyrics point to experiences beyond his own.
