Lyrics:
One man come in the name of love
One man come and go.
One man come he to justify
One man to overthrow.
In the name of love
What more in the name of love.
In the name of love
What more in the name of love.
One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resist
One man washed up on an empty beach
One man betrayed with a kiss.
In the name of love
What more in the name of love.
In the name of love
What more in the name of love.
Early morning, April four
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky.
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride.
In the name of love
What more in the name of love.
In the name of love
What more in the name of love.
In the name of love
What more in the name of love.
In the name of love
What more in the name of love.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how well the guitar effects are used in this song? So often they tend to be way overused, and also used in the complete wrong places. The Edge gets it 100% right here, and it works with the overall timbre of the song. Absolutely world class guitar knowledge

You people need to learn English. In order for something to be underrated it has to be unpopular. This song is one of the most popular songs ever, top 500 by Rolling Stone, in fact it was U2's first Top 40 in the US. It's had covers and has been used in movies and television shows. Hard for it to have been more popular.

King and U2 On May 26, 2017, David Evan’s guitar pick made contact with the thin metal string on his black Stratocaster guitar, reverberating through a packed house at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. That one note was the opening to U2′s “Pride (In the name of Love).” A deafening roar of approval followed. “Pride” was released by U2 in 1984 as a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., a man who lived in a time when it was very dangerous for a Black man to show pride. On April 4, 1968, an assassin with what I am sure was a hate for that very pride would end King’s life. As I stood with my brother and friend, moved beyond words, U2′s singer Paul Hewson (Bono) drove home the band’s message nearing the end with the lyrics, “Early morning, April four, Shot rings out in the Memphis sky, Free at last, they took your life, They could not take your pride.” Once again a deafening roar arose from U2′s fans in the stadium. A roar I would like to think was one of respect for a great man and one of hope for the great dream that King envisioned. King spoke of a day when Black men and women could be “free” of fear of losing their life due to simply being Black. There is still much work to be done, and I am certain he would want us to work diligently toward a goal of truly being the land of the free for all Americans. No exceptions. Sadly, King never experienced true freedom. It was only after his last breath would he be “Free at last.” Glen Blankenship, Ingleside

Thanks for your response. Given the fact among others that Dr. King was a Nobel Prize winner, it is certainly true that his gifts were welcomed and recognized by “the world.” This includes many in Russia, Poland, and Ireland. Dr. King speaks to and for what is best in the people of the United States - the true “American dream.” His goal was to make us better - to hold us accountable “to what we said on paper” - not to tear us down. In the broad scope of history, this nation has been the setting for both tragedy and triumph. But I am confident that the American people - guided by our Constitution - will never cease to strive to form a more perfect union for all - including our indigenous people. I hope you’ll join us in the effort.

@sparkimoto
@sparkimoto 5 жыл бұрын
It's one of the most clever combinations of an arpeggio with delay. This would become the playing technique that would define the signature style and sound of THE EDGE which would later inspire and influence many guitarists that followed. It became known as 'dotted 8th note' delay, and likely influenced guitar effects pedal manufacturers to design upgrades that could dial in this particular setting more quickly and easily. I'm only speculating though.

@@thegteam4349 Right?! Wham! even stopped by one night. The store was in LA and they were on their way to the airport. Fatburger was two doors down (I gained SO much weight at that job lol). It was late and we were closed, but we still got them to come in and sign a bunch of stuff. We had a Ticketmaster in the store, so I can't even tell you how many concerts I went to that I wouldn't have otherwise (Prince's Purple Rain 6 times, the last of which my friend and I actually got on stage). It really was the best first job that anybody could ever hope to have. Our manager was cool as hell, and more than half of us were fresh out of high school. In the summer after the store closed at 11 on Friday and Saturday nights, we'd take a Duralog out to the beach to just chill. Our customers even noticed how much fun we were having. In seems completely ridiculous to me now, but they'd tell us that they lived closer to another store in our chain, but they'd come to ours because the staff was so helpful. We'd have people singing to us when they didn't know the name of a song or who it was by, and the crew was diverse enough that somebody could figure it out (no matter how bad the singing was 🤣). The store also had a video side (in the days that renting videos meant standing in long lines), so even those of us on the audio side would help our favorite customers by jumping them in front of the line or just zeroing out their charges so they could just return the videos without waiting in line. Very special job 😊

It was after this great song,which reached number 3 in the UK in September/October 1984,that they seemed to me to morph into full-blown stadium rockers. A similar thing seemed to happen for Simple Minds at roughly the same time.

I get chills and emotional whenever I hear this song. As an American of Irish ancestry (despite having a German last name), it always makes me feel good that people from across the pond had written such a poignant song about MLK. @@davehollick3646 America was meant to set ablaze from time to time. To illustrate that stagnation doesn't equate to peace, that docility doesn't equate to civility. Burn, you city on a hill! Up in embers, like an incandescent bitch, lighting the way for the disenfranchised, the cheated, the frustrated souls that cling to your shores and soak it's soil with hope and hogwash. To the Ramparts! To the suburbs! Let Town and Country burn apart to reveal the skeletons in our closets, so that we may bury our indignation and Learn to love ourselves and others as a rule of thumb, not an exception.
