I'm glad you did this. I Demod he 1073 and right away with the EQ off i could tell the sound quality had changed. My guitar felt like it sounded better, it was adding some serious character. I heard the 1084 had an identical Pre amp but with extended EQ, so i bought it. Straight away i thought.....wait whats going on the sound is nowhere near as affected with the EQ off. I thought there is no way anyone could say the Pre amps are the same? Your investigation confirms what i knew before. I thought i was going mad with everyone telling me they are identical. The 1073 is a lot less transparent (not that the 1084 does notadd character). A lot of the reputation of the 1073 is from musicians who swear by tracking through them. It adds something musical (which may or may not be what you want). The 1084 is not name checked or emulated anywhere near as much as the 1073 for tracking. The 1084 is name checked by producers focused on mixing. A lot of musicians just adore what the 1073 Preamps do, the 1084 just don't add the same thing.

Keep in mind that this is showing only frequency response and there could be dynamic differences between the two "units" that won't show up this way. Typically, UA's modeling gets better over time so I wouldn't be surprised if the 1084 sounds "better" just for that reason. Just a guess. It's very obvious between some of their plugs. Not sure if we've passed that to the point of diminishing returns but I think it's still happening. 1073 = 2014, so 6 years between them. ... By the way, the 10, 12, 18 on the high shelf are frequencies. 1073 is 10K (thus, they look similar when the 1084 is set to 10)...

@@5iv3rteen35 For 1,300 bucks you could have purchased a WA12 MK2 black mic preamp from Warm Audio, and an LL2A compressor limiter from Little Labs. The compressor is like three compressors in one, and you can even use it in mastering applications. The other two settings are FET & Vari Mu. UAD will never be better than hardware my friend, and I'm not knocking it because I know they are good at what they do. I'm just saying that if I'm spending a thousand bucks I'm going to get a real deal piece of kit and not just a freakin' plugin. Smh. hey great vid. If you use the Logic Pro test tone, put it to needle pulse and bring the hz down to 20hz and turn the anti aliased off to stop the 20k movement. then just turn your Eqs decay all the way up. and you'll have a dead flat line to analyze.
@piotrwojtusiak19273 жыл бұрын
Try using pink or white noise instead of a sine wave. This analyser in FabFilter plugins might not be the best choice here. I would recommend a different analyser. Something more accurate and with scalable vertical axis. Proper gain staging would also improve the readings. There's a bigger difference EQ-wise among both of them and 1073 or 1084 compared to a 'clean' preamp also.

Cool Video man thanks. I just got the 1073 because I recorded a drum session with it a few months ago and we have to go redo 3 songs so I bought the 1073 so the session would be the same. 1081 looks cool though. Just one thing I would have liked to see you explore, is what kind of effect the output pot and or fader had, and if the output knob affected/acted like a real unit. What I mean is the hardware has an input and output transformer and while you can drive the input extra hard and attenuate with the output, You can also get some different saturation/harmonics from driving the output transformer. I typically goose the input transformer on my BAE and Great River(just into the yellow so to speak) and then set my output accordingly(usually on the lower side) , but ya, curious to see how the output got modelled. Im sure they made it accurate to the real thing.

If you need a technical full spectrum, you should use a white noise. White noise has statistically all frequencies covered with the same amplitude. Pink noise is only good, as it has a decrease in amplitude towards the higher frequencies, so it sounds to our ears more like a "real flat" noise. So if you want to test it graphically with a spectrum analyzer, use white noise. If you want to hear what it does to a perceived flat noise, use pink noise. --> and maybe it would be best if you set your spectrum analyzer to a "mean" setting (of 3s could be), and not just momentary peak analysis. by the way do you know plugin doctor? it's an app that exactly shows you what the plugin does, in any domain. freq, phase, time. as far as I know.

so, for the top knob- what's the difference between mic/line. If I'm recording virtual instruments in- it's line that i use?
@cunninghammanor2 жыл бұрын
You can still use either for virtual instruments I believe. It would just about about how much gain you want to add to the signal. (saturation)
@TriWaZe3 жыл бұрын
I just picked up the 1073 and I noticed there is a massive difference using it in the Unison slot compared to putting it into an insert. In the Unison slot I have to crank it to like 50 just to even start to get a decent volume, but I also notice even bringing it up to like 65 I only hear a little bit of saturation with my untrained ears. But when I put it in the insert, my mic is blaring at like 40 and there's wayy more saturation which gives me much more control over the sound I want to get. It's weird because everybody talks about how they use their 1073 at like 30-40 and all the presets for vocals are at that level but it's just not possible for me using it in the Unison slot. I bought the plugin and want to get a noticeable amount of saturation so I'm starting to wonder if I should just use it in the insert and say hell with it. Cause right now it almost feels like a waste of money.
@cunninghammanor3 жыл бұрын

But yes, I do hear what you are saying about a general difference in volume, I think the unison is trying to approximate the physical devices input level, that’s why in my video I set it to zero. I’d say the insert is like 5x when you use it that way. Experiment and find something you like! It’s really nice to add character on the way in, and just tame harshness with an eq after! So crank it up in the unison!

Came across your vids today and have already watched 3. Definitely subscribed. Do you use any REAL preamps when recording into LUNA? I have a Neve Portico 5032 that I've been using with Logic which sounds really good. But I recently downloaded LUNA (I have an Apollo Duo Mkii) and that got me thinking of selling the Portico and getting a couple of good UAD plugin preamps as well as sound processing plugins. But I'm not sure that their preamps will actually work like the actual preamp I have. Can they actually boost gain. If so, is that something that would happen in LUNA or the UAD Console/Control Panel?
@cunninghammanor4 жыл бұрын
Yes! They can, but I find that if you have something you really like already, you should stick with that and try other things on the side. The UA amps are great, but I think they aren’t quite the real thing. That’d why they released the OX amp too. Check that out!

Dude you said that that the red line would be the 73 and that the white line would be the 84, but then every time you talk about the 73 you point to the white line and every time you talk about the 84 you point to the red line. @cunninghammanor4 жыл бұрын
That’s a hard one to answer! :-) honestly, I would demo all the ones you are thinking about then make some decisions. It really depends on what your needs are: compression, eq, distortion. From what you listed, seems like distortion and saturation is what you are after. I’d say the 1084 for sure, the gain adds a lot to the signal. If you are using Luna, you get oxide for free. Culture vulture is great but heavy on dsp. Studer and ampex are great. Even the moog filter has great distortion built into it. 1084 gives a lot of vibe and flexibility. As do the other pre’s. Hope that helps. Obviously there are a lot of other options, that’s why demo is great.

great vid. many plugins have this configuration of mic/line gain, fader, digitaloutput. i am working to understand the optimal interaction between the three, do you have a quick summary or tip as to how you think of this ? thanks again!
@cunninghammanor4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jonathan! Thanks for the comment. The fundamental is to reach -18 with your signal. The gain will add color, the fader (with UA plugins also has color if raised) and output has no color. So it just depends on if you want to color the signal or not. Not = gain the lowest output the highest. And vice versa for the color version. Plus anywhere in the middle. The vid I did demonstrates what happens across the whole spectrum. Hope that helps!
@Johnwilkinsonofficial4 жыл бұрын

Wow! Thanks so much, I’d never heard of that! I’ll take a look, on $25 as well.

It is neither a sine wave nor a sawtooth waveform you are using. A sawtooth waveform or a sine wave does not result in a flat frequency response throughout the eq spectrum. A sine wave is just a constant tone with no harmonics and a sawtooth has both even and odd harmonics that get lower in amplitude the higher in hertz you go. It looks more like noise to me. But if you really want to show what the plugs are doing, use a sine wave. Then you will see an even tone in both amplitude and frequency and when you use the plugs the harmonics will be more visible.

Nice vid! Have you used the 1084 already? is it warmer than the 1073? Is it powerful? Cheers!
@cunninghammanor4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. As you see in the vid, the 1073 has a bit more bottom emphasis, with a scooped mid range. But the 1084 seems a lot more versatile with a different flavor. What I love about this is that they are different. I though the gain system would be the same for both units. But it’s not. They do different things

@@cunninghammanor Awesome. Have ever tried an external pre of $700 - $1000 range vs any of the UAD? I was thinking of buying some, but I've seen demos on KZbin and the difference of tone, warmth and power is very little. I know is different when you have the gear right there, so that's why I'm asking. Cheers!
@cunninghammanor4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn’t see this question until now. I have recorded with some expensive pre’s. From my perspective, the UA stuff is so close, cheaper and swappable, so it really undermines investing in a lot of hardware. Now, I think there are certain cases, vocals perhaps where you might have a perfect mic and pre for a specific thing. It can be argued both ways, but I’m perfectly happy with recording with ua stuff!
@preciseaudioblog4 жыл бұрын
@@cunninghammanor I've seen many real pres vs UAD comparisons and the difference is less than 10% (for me). Now, I've discovered than when you have the gear with you, there is a different perspective. Thank you, for your answer!

running a sine wave. Didn't you mean white noise?
@cunninghammanor4 жыл бұрын
I ended up merging multiple sine waves to create the file in the video. I believe white noise was difficult to view the way I’m showing it, but I might revisit!

mironas leys I do like that the 1084 has a bit more midrange in it, but yes, it’s up to taste I think. I may need to take a closer look at a final vocal setting and compare what they are doing at that point! But yes, it’s up to your own taste! :-)
