Yep - I love how the Mutt Lange trick pushed the vocals slightly forward, hyped the top end, and then glued the whole thing together 😎

The “Mutt Lange” trick wasn’t originated by Mutt Lange. Keith Olsen, who was the original chief engineer at Sound City - he designed the rooms/equipment, etc. - and was involved with them getting the first Neve console in LA used that trick. First with the original 3 rack Dolby 201 (with the Lo and Lo Mid cards pulled.) Keith used Dolby Catt 22 cards in the 361 unit, after physically modding the circuit board of the Cat22 cards to (again) bypass the Lo and Lo-Mids. Keith personally modded a few CAT’s for me (and later showed me the mod.) Now KEITH, got this trick from George Martin…. Because the Beatles fri d everything and discovered/used this technique. I am not saying that Mutt Didn’t use it… but i’d risk some cash that Keith Had it way before…. and from George Martin.

Keith indeed may have been the first. We have access to his original 301 unit and some of his modded CAT22 cards. On the 301 he added stopper screws to pull out the lower bands without pulling the cards out entirely. What we call Air mode replicates this use case. Works as expected when mixed with the dry, so you’ll need to use the mix knob with the plugin. Based on looking at many master tapes, we’ve seen both effects applied by Keith.

So, you mean there are musicians in a studio writing music live? Then they make ten or so songs? You know when I was working with Geffen Records in the early 90s I wrote and recorded a lot of music in daily sessions. I’m curious that the studio is even used, as decompression of the body with large sound backing, makes it impossible to record at a studio. I recorded at Smart a year and a half before Nevermind released. I was writing in seventh grade. I know they don’t record at studios. Who, are the musicians? The government doesn’t allow people to make money in a monopoly. The media is very controlled. By who? The government laws took over and believe me they do not care about music. I might have changed that. Geffen Records can’t pay me or credit me for my work as the government is sending cops messages to make sure I don’t get paid for my work.

If I remember , you can do the " ENCODE " thing with the U-he " SATIN " plugin . You have the compander section and then use it to your advantage and make the " ENCODE " top end sound . Use the A-Type Mode on the " Encoder " section and put the " NONE " option on the " Decoder " section , then you have it . Simply use the MIX knob and compress it with a 1176 for better results .

I feel like you can come close to that Mutt Lange trick with FF Saturn2. You'd have to split off the top end bands and boost the saturation on them way way WAY more than you'd typically be comfortable doing. Do it in a parallel aux send like the Schepps trick w/ a compressor after, and blend it back in w/ the fader.

You mentioned not using the “align” function with the mics but I’ve found that function useful if I want to gain control of how much pre delay I have in the reverb mode. Align eliminates the time delay that naturally happens b/w the source and mic. When I hit align, I’m in control of how much pre delay occurs in the signal (either shorter or longer). I find this most useful tho when I’m only using one mic signal in a plug-in like this or Ocean Way.

@@ColtCapperrune you guys know that Audiothing already has a great sounding Dolby A and Dolby B noise reduction emulation? For this they probably used the Dolby A Type, which was an early Noise Reduction for Tape Machines. Basically what it is doing is boosting and exiting highs on the way to Tape and reducing it after the Record Path by the same amount, so leaving the sound untouched (in theory) but reducing the tape hiss.

I notice none of the reviews of this mention the Ocean Way plugin. It's almost like UAD doesn't want to remind anyone that Ocean Way exists! Do you think this is the same room/mic modeling tech they used for Ocean Way, but in a different room with some nice extras (dolby, chamber, compressor, etc), or do you think they totally updated their room/mic modeling technology? I have an abundance of UAD2 sharcs and I'm constrained on CPU, so as long as this stays native it's going to be hard for me to move away from being able to use some Ocean Way plugins without soaking up CPU.
@Rgdonaire_07

The manual explicitly says to avoid mixing a re-mic'd signal in parallel with the original, as it likely will cause phase issues. I also think in your first example, putting the close mic into the plugin (set to remic) would get your a more realistic result that feeding room mics into the plugin, and then just listening to the plugins room mics. That's a bit like sending 1 reverb into another reverb. If you like the sound, great, but it's not simulating the kit recorded at SCS.

I’ve used this and it is deep. I’d question the use of hardware dsp when Apple Silicon is so powerful. Sharc technology is so old now I’d be loathed to invest in it. I’d sacrifice some older dsp only plugins for the benefits of Apple Silicon and native plugins. Unless UAD brings out a very high end new dsp unit I’d never invest in dsp.

It’s a good comment… it really is… the problem with your hypothesis is that just like with EVERY gear/plugin video, I test it extensively before even agreeing to do a video. So while I appreciate the sArCaSm, it’s hilariously wrong. Guess I’m not ever allowed to have new favorites as these tools keep getting better and better. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Meanwhile I’ll be using it nonstop. ✌🏻

@@ColtCapperrune Never said I didn't like it and wouldn't buy it. I like it very much and will be purchasing for upcoming sessions. You know how it gets out here in the wild west of KZbin, man. Everyone says the newest shit is the best shit. I won't take that with a grain of salt with UA stuff. I'm all in with them. But I'm also in the guitar universe and that gets sketchy AF so you have to understand a bit of my perhaps unnecessary sarcasm.

What aboit Capital and Ocean Way ? Is this better ? Love the two
@PlottingTheDownfall
@PlottingTheDownfall 19 күн бұрын
For 80% of vocals I prefer Capital Chambers. When I do use this for vocals, it's in Reverb mode and is for the room. I often mix songs where the artist or producer decided to track vocals bone dry and using this for a nice room that thickens things up and creates some space is nice.
@tillsommerdrums

What I find weird about this is that when the plugin is active, it almost sounds like the sound is coming out of speakers and that's what we hear. I have the Waves Ocean Way Studio Emulation which is made to have the sound of that control room in your headphones so you can ave a better spacial awareness of your mix and can hear how the mix sounds through near field and mid/far field speakers. And this right here has the same effect I feel like. To me it doesn't sound like a drumset in a room. It sounds like I am listening to a drumset in a room via speakers in the control room. Or am I misinterpreting the intent of the plugin ?
@CreativeMindsAudio

their ocean way plugin was incredible and love it on piano, but other stuff it doesn't work well and it is a bit limiting for application of re-mic and reverb. THIS on the other hand is that plugin to the next level. it's everything i wish the ocean way plugin had. not in a place to spend right now, but so tempting!

@@danymalsound YES! But that would probably take a lot of work. I think there’s a reason we haven’t seen many plugins from UA lately. Ocean Way is great! I was disappointed when I first got it, took along time for me to find what I thought was it’s uses. A lot of putting it away then coming back. I often just do stuff with fiends that record at home so no fancy studio stuff. With drums I tend to put OW on the drum buss in remic. Find the mic I like then move the mic really close to reduce the room noise and so it doesn’t delay the sound to much. Add some room in to taste and would do the regular buss processing after ward. It’s important to mix into the plugin when doing it this way. Another good use is on acoustic or electric Di tracks. DI to plugin pedals then the guitar amp sims and room can be cool. Can add space and mellow out an acu Di. Did a whole mix with OW on the mix buss once, just a little room mixed in. Gave it a cool band in a room feel. Just saying there’s a lot of ways to use OW and don’t give up on it.

What i want to knows is, where is the apollo version? I am starting to get this feeling that at some point UAD will replace all their DSP based audio interfaces with Non DSP versions. If this is the case then prices for the non dsp versions should be significantly reduced.

Why duplicate the track instead of just using the dry/wet knob in your daw?

In the Re-Mic mode, the wet/dry knob and predelay are disabled. So he duplicated the tracks to control how much of the changed tonal signature of the effected track is brought up into the mix.
