The Russians didn’t seem to think about that and this is one reason that Russia didn’t overcome Ukraine quickly like everyone thought. The last time Canada fought a war actively? 2001, Afghanistan. They had good logistics then, the soldiers were kept healthy and didn’t have to resort to barbarism like the Russian soldiers. There, answered your question and then some.

Had to eat in a Canadian mess hall for a few weeks in the 90s. It.... wasn't great. Kinda of depressing really. The salad bar was pretty good though which was fortunate because some of the food was literally inedible. I don't mean it didn't taste good, I mean it could not be cut much less chewed. Thank God for the sausage and poutine vendors near the barracks otherwise it would have to have been the NCO club for dinner every night. That would have added up quick. One of our guys snuck into the officers mess ( I ain't saying how) and said the food there was great. No surprise there really. We were shocked at the quality of food they were feeding their enlisted troops. I assume things got better.

Despite all the claims on paper that soldiers can refuse to fight, they probably think they won't be treated well back in Putin's Russia - treated as pond scum for having deserted, getting no future job prospects, no real future life. It makes them think they have no good options. That's why it's not just morally good that Ukraine treats POWs better than Russia, it's also good strategy. Your enemy is more willing to surrender if they expect better treatment from you. This has a lot to do with why WW2 Germans often rushed west to surrender. They'd rather be in a UK or US POW camp than a Russian one. This is why the US got Vehrner Von Braun instead of Russia. He knew he'd be out to work on rockets either way but in Russia it would probably be from a prison camp for the rest of his life.

Well, it's over know. Russia has taken pretty much everything they wanted to take while the Ukranian army have collapsed. The 2 hundred casualties daily and the ca. 7 hundred wounded a day was of course unacceptable numbers and the collapse came. There's nothing America can do about it but back Zelensky in his negotiations with Putin. But it's Russia who will dictate the terms for the peace. I've come to the conclusion that a big reason for the lack of mutinies is that many (if not most) Russians are serfs by nature. It's a slave mentality, where they feel deep in their twisted, black hearts that their only proper role in life is serving the Czar and his boyars. However, I don't know about the Russians. In addition, I always had a charger with me, which could be operated with 12 and 24 volts DC. On top of that, I sometimes charged my phone and power bank with a solar panel during the day or with a hand crank at night when no vehicle or fixed accommodation was available.
