For the same pouplation as Ukraine today, France in 1914-1918 "accepted" to loose 1,4 millions young men ( more than 6 millions were mobilized.) Fortunately I don't see those figures reached yet but it's informative about what a country of the same population is able to sacrifice if it wants to. At this time it was to regain annexed territories as well... So the motivation was quite the same. North Vietnam had a population of 21 millions (not far of half of Ukraine) and lost 1 millions men while the US lost 58 000 soldiers but they were ready to anything to win.
