UAV-based Person Detection and Geolocation for Search and Rescue | M. Ivasic-Kos | DSC Europe 23

In her talk, Marina Ivasic-Kos discussed why people enjoy spending time in the wilderness and how, at times, they may get lost or injured, making their survival dependent on being effectively found and rescued in the shortest possible time. He shared insights into the search and rescue (SAR) operations that commence after reporting an accident, involving the activation of all possible resources. She highlighted the incorporation of drones in SAR operations, enabling the use of computer vision methods for automatically detecting people in aerial images. Additionally, she presented deep learning models specifically developed for the detection of persons in search and rescue operations, shedding light on the challenges faced in real-world scenarios.
