Not happy about a 20% raise, how many people work jobs and get a 20% raise, your average person gets much less then that. 40% is outrageous, go ask you boss for a 40% raise and see where that gets you. All they are doing is hurting the rest of the country and making it harder for your average person to get a vehicle. Maybe they should get a different job if they are that unhappy.

During my construction career I worked for the IBEW, Independent Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union Local 59 in Dallas and also the Dallas Carpenter's union Local 120, before they merged with Fort Worth. All of the different unions worked together and if one of them went on strike, the others did too in solidarity. This usually caused me to lose about 60 working days per year on average. Those were days with zero pay, unless you walked the picket line and then the union paid you $25 dollars a day for each day you picketed. We were not allowed to work any other jobs if they were non-union. So, officially side jobs were not allowed. But, we did them anyway because we couldn't survive just on the union pay we were getting only when we were working. However, if we hadn't been striking we could've easily lived comfortably on the wages we were getting! In Dallas now, the unions are much smaller because they literally priced themselves out of a job. After I left and started my own non-union company, the IBEW actually had to take a pay cut just to keep working and the Dallas Carpenter's union had to merge with Fort Worth because membership had fallen so much.

You are all honestly missing the point. This is a supply and demand discussion. Keep manufacturing low, and profits will remain high; especially with inventory of many models being as much a a year's worth. People simply can't afford $60,000-$100,000 cars anymore. Especially POS from the big 'ol three.

Most people could not now nor before afford $60-$70k cars. You can thank personal irresponsibility and lending practices for that. Average consumer debt payments for an automobile is around $550/ month. If you can’t afford a automobile outright, don’t buy it and purchase USED. If people were more fiscally responsible, the prices of new cars wouldn’t be as high as they are. New cars are a horrible investment

@asdfbill8020
@asdfbill8020 Жыл бұрын
My comment will undoubtedly be flagged by the community or taken down by the mods but these are selective strikes the UAW in collaboration with the companies targeted to minimize the impact on corporate profits. The investment bankers agree the UAW could have selected more critical plants such as engine assembly plants with the ability to shutter additional facilities which would be more disruptive of corporate profit. There is an excess amount of vehicles on dealer lots and these limited strikes would allow the Big 3 to get their inventories back in control and tighten up excessive discounting. Fitch Ratings issued a statement saying these limited strikes would have little financial impact on the Big 3
@mrg8581

My father was a Committee man up at Buick Motor Division and my husband dropped dead on the line at the Ford Glass Plant in 1995..so the Union runs deep in me, but, asking for a 40% raise while making as much as the average factory rat does while working at the Big 3 in insane. Maybe the Big 3 isn't interested in selling to John Q. Public? Because the average American under the age of 35 cannot afford a new car. Not really sure whose gonna buy these cars.

Yes, they should. Without the right to withhold your labour, capitalism would revert from a system of wage-slavery back to chattel slavery. It's the workers who generate new wealth, not the capitalist owners, so the workers should be properly compensated.

American workers have never taken any American companies hostage. Your comment lacks substance and reason. I am not going to repeat what others have commented on. One day workers will realize they don't need owners considering that labor does everything from services, healthcare, engineering, education, accounting, production, distribution, accounting, etc. What the owners do is to extract surplus value from labor which is later to become profits for themselves and a part of that goes to shareholders. That is all they do while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet. BTW, workers are very capable of running the workplace and able to plan what is produced and distributed.

40% is ridiculous. 32 hour work weeks are ridiculous, these people don't have a clue. Their jobs will be replaced by robots and they will be sent to checkout at Walmart. What is the average salary of these factory workers? Can you imagine how much more new vehicles will cost if this passes?

how much should an unskilled line worker make? sorry bolting on bumpers is not skilled labor. your not chained to your job. if you dont like it or dont make enough get another job. the only thing you deserve is the paycheck you agreed to work for. all this BS about i deserve this and we deserve that is absurd. if you want to better your life educate yourself. dont blame the corporation you work for , for your lack of marketable job opportunities .

hey look someone who doesnt know how the world works. id like to educate you but seems you cant understand simple philosophy . which is why you rely on a union for your inability to gain more lucrative employment. i have my own company, and i pay my employees on their level of abilities . laborers do not make as much as craftsmen. craftsmen do not make as much as i do. its pretty simple. maybe you can understand that. . @@guhnmystro

I WORKED AT CHRYSLER NEW PROCESS GEAR IN SYRACUSE FOR THIRTY THREE YEARS. MADE A HELL OF A LOT OF MONEY, ACTUALLY THOUGHT I WAS OVER PAID.. NOW WE WERE SATISFIED WITH THE CONTRACTS OF 7 TO 10 % INCREASE EVERY CONTRACT. WE WORKED HARD THEN..MOSTLY MANUAL.. 40% INCREASE!!!! ARE YOU NUTS!!!! ONE OTHER THING , FOR 33 YEARS MY PENSION IS STILL THE SAME. NEVER GOT AN INCREASE!!! MY PLANT IS CLOSED NOW..GONE! MY BROTHER WORK FOR GM IN SYRACUSE...THAT PLANT IS CLOSED NOW...GONE!!! WATCH WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!!!

Congratulations on your retirement brother. If you were receiving 7% to 10% every contract you worked previously to 2008 a contract in which cola (which you were also receiving) in which we do not now plus the bonuses we gave up and Holidays we gave up in which we just got back hmm 11 years later. Now if we had be receiving 7% - 10% increases from the 2011 contract I am very confident there would have been a deal in place with no strike. Think about it 2011 to 2023 = 12 years contracts are 4 years that's 3 contracts which would be 30% so all he is asking for is 10% this contract which is exactly what you were getting previously to 2007. Put car prices gas prices and food prices back to what they were when you felt OVERPAID and let the workers of today just get a little taste of what you had. It truly saddens me that a UAW worker would come on here and say that another of today does not work hard and is overpaid when they took concessions for the past 15 years to preserve the very pension you complaining about that in your 33 years you must not have done anything to improve in the 8 plus contracts you signed. So instead of calling us CRAZY you should say thank you and best of luck. In closing I would like to say there is an old saying shear a sheep many times skin it only once. To you and your brother very nice job skinning that sheep we so happy you ate well and left nothing for future brothers and sisters by securing new business so others could eat like you. GLUTENY is 1 of 7 deadly sins.

Workers should not be able to take entire American companies HOSTAGE that will have enormous negative impacts on other workers around the country and the world, causing more eroding of these car companies competitiveness against cars that have been flooding world markets at government subsidized prices. These striking workers are literally firing themselves and others that are not involved in the strike from their jobs.
