WOW! Thank you SO MUCH for this video and share! I grew up there, and my first 23 years in Vancouver.... So sad to me that it has been gutted and its soul is gone by the City Gov, racism, and such. I had to laugh at Shirley's memory? of chicken stores.... I was working in one as a child to help out my Dad :) Yes it did stink, but after a bit... it was OK... another City Health inspector victim indeed. KUDOS again for sharing the history, and will miss the thriving community it was, so crowded you could not walk the sidewalks, and all the elders we were taught to respect. Sadly our children will never know how hard it was, but also the wonderful community we had. We always were a blend in Strathcona, and miss it much, but have to sadly say it is gone. Ironic that the preface to this; Vancouver was stolen from the 1st Nation people, and then they killed Chinatown as well. All the BEST to you and we can only hope for a better future for our children and Grandchildren. Cheers :)

Wow, thanks for this video. As a teenager I used to hang out in Chinatown and Strathacona. I hope Chinatown can have a revival somehow, and its soul still intact. 🙏

Agree that Chinatown should be a thriving place with shoppers 6 wide on the sidewalks like it used to be but sadly it's a ghost town now. So sad to see the old footage of Hastings lined with restaurants and shops. Where the interview is happening (2:30) that tourist sign with the map showing the way to Gastown and the 'Seaside Greenway' is torn down and the lamp post in the background has had it's top knocked off and it was never repaired. Most of the trees in the background and along Carrall have been chopped down since then. I'd love to hear from the property owners what the challenges are with the Pender Street buildings that stand empty for years. Cropped out of this shot is Kitty's Beauty Studio which has stood empty for a decade, the building on the Northeast corner of the intersection has been empty for years, Eagle Gifts has moved and the storefront is empty, Bombast is gone, Ming Wo is gone, Everything Cafe is gone, the furniture store is gone, the herbal store at Pender and Columbia is gone and that is just the North side of the street on 1 block. The last remaining business is a single hair salon and that's not going to fill the sidewalk with crowds. Sad to see.

My family and I visited Vancouver Chinatown this summer in 2022. We were scared and horrified. We were afraid for our safety even though we are from high-crime NYC too. This is just shameful to see what happens to these normal law-bidding people besieged by ubiquitous homelessness and blatantly public use of illegal drugs. Just shameful to see your sanctimonious and holier-than-thou politicians didn't do anything about the area.

The decline is mainly due to the increase in addicts and illegal activities in the surrounding area.Some of the major landmark buildings in Vancouver Chinatown got restored.

@@canman5060 The decline is completely due to crack addicts and high crime in the area. That's the only reason why the new generation of Chinese have moved out in the first place. Local governments have continuously pushed the homeless into Chinatown. Back then Chinatown had a thriving underground business with connections to HK and Macau. Pushing the homeless into Chinatown has destroyed that environment, sadly
