My plan to Uber on NYE (only during the day) came to an end when my aunt called. Her father, my grandfather, was in his last hours on earth, so me and my wife were on the telephone saying our good-byes to him. He passed away at 10 minutes to the new year. Rest in peace, Ghan, we love you forever. I did, however have one Uber rider on NYE, less than four bucks. I think a big reason NYE sucked for many is passengers have learned how to game the system, waiting out surges, cancelling existing bookings if the surge drops, walking a few blocks over, etc. Uber has cannibalized their fares by letting passengers get away with murder for years. Charging them $5 for cancelling a $100 surge ride is a joke. If they charged 50% instead, it would be win-win for everybody, passengers, drivers, and uber. It's time uber's investors demand Travis step down

I did okay overall with my first full NYE (last year I quit early out of disgust with the total lack of participation in the area and no decent surge), grossing a bit over $300 for the 5 hours of action, of which the majority was the 2nd to last ride, @ 5.8 surge and a double drop ending about 17 miles from home and depositing me in the sticks (well, for Uber traffic), which brought me $127 plus a $20 tip! They knew what the charge was going to be, and had no complaints since they got there in style and comfort courtesy of my Mercedes 7 passenger, and it was the very end of bar rush, in the middle of a snowstorm, with most of the local drivers already gone off duty or on trips (I know this because they waited over 17 minutes for me to get back from another long distance run). I made it safely out and back, with the only problem being my wheel wells were so packed with wet snow that it almost negated the suspension and then turned so cold overnight was several days before I could chip it all out. Look at the bright side Randy; You're still in the game, did better than breaking even, and you learned that chasing the surge isn't always worth the hassle. Plus you saw first hand that even law enforcement can be dicks. Too bad you don't have that one online 😀

I had a good time and cleared $130 for 5 hours including tips. I had a great time with my passengers and thankfully no accidents. Uber Man, sorry you had a rough night on NYE. My NYE went well here in Washington DC. I spent a lot of time in the suburbs before midnight and made more money before midnight than after. Right before midnight I went to Northwest DC because surge was going up to 2.0X-3.0X. That's high because we normally don't see more than 2.0X in the DC area. I waited for a ride in Northwest DC from 12 midnight to 12:20 AM and didn't get a single request. I said "Forget this" and decided to chase surge in Maryland because the whole Metro area was lit up like a Christmas tree. That was a mistake. In hindsight, I should have positioned myself in a different place in Northwest DC and waited in the surge/Boost area. That said, I made $200 in one night, which I'm happy about. Keep posting videos about making money with Uber! Good stuff.

the highest I saw in Chicago was 3.5x. Overall it wasn't a bad night, but no better than I would have gotten on a typical busy Saturday night. What made it better was bonuses based on volume (which they call "quest" for some reason). There were two: $50 for 8 10 rides from 8-midnight and $100 for 12 rides between midnight and 4am. It was really dead during the 8-12 slot, but it turned out there was an unadvised $20 bump for 6 rides, so I got that. I hit the $100 bonus too, so my total was $353 for 10.5 hours on line. I had a couple of Select rides too (I drive a Cadillac SRX), which also helped. So for the night $33/hr-$2.60/mile all-in, $22/hr-$1.72/mile fares only.

Here in Nashville, Uber got up to a 10.5x and Lyft was up to 700% with $60/hour guarentees from both platforms from midnight to 4am. I made $700 ($40 from Uber and $660 from Lyft) from 6pm to 8am.

Hi Randy, yes the night was not good at all. Sorry to hear about your situation! I work the LA area, and the area was terrible when it came to getting requests. When it comes to surge was not as high as I thought it should have been, but the bonus is also sucked badly too! The boosts did not start until 12:30 a.m. that night and the problem was my app went down between 12 a.m. and 1:30 a.m.! I was able to make one of the bonuses between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m. But it was so hard to get 10 rides as you needed to have! There were too many drivers on the road. When I looked at the app that the Riders use they were just so too drivers in everywhere of LA. in many areas, there were eight drivers within a half-mile radius! Which makes it almost impossible to get hits! In this case, this night was not really worth the effort in my opinion! Should have just went to a party instead!!

This was my first new years driving. I spend the night with my family and at 12:15 I went out. I didn't go downtown I started working where I live, about 45 minutes from downtown. It was surging between 3 to 5. I worked my way up and drove in different places including downtown and Miami Beach. The surge pretty much stayed between 3 to 5. At the end I did 7 surge rides, drove 4 hours and made $150. Here in Miami Uber offered up to $50 bucks in guaranteed hours and crazy $500 random bonuses. In conclusion all the drivers out there filled the surge demand like Uber wanted.

San Diego had guaranteed hourly from Uber, something they haven't done in years. It was $35 an hour from 7-12, $75 an hour from 12-3, $50 an hour from 3-5. I had a guy approach me in downtown after 12 when I was waiting for another passenger. He asked me to take him 6 miles and said name your price. I told him $100 and in my car we went.

In Chicago I drove from 10 AM until 10 PM on the 31st. It was a challenge most of the day to get runs (not a surprise). We had a promotion from 8 PM until Midnight: 6 rides during that time $20, 10 rides $50. From 8 - 9:30 I had 2 rides. I was not on track for either bonus. Stuck around a little longer and didn't even get a run. Went home to be with the family and enjoyed my night there. I had one of the worst days based on hourly income that day. I went out at 10 AM on the 1st and hit a 1.9 surge from downtown to a suburb that is about 10 miles beyond O'hare (A good run- $60 in 40 minutes). The rest of the day went well, and I ended around 4 PM. I made MORE money on the 1st in HALF the time. I don't know what it was like after midnight here, because I simply didn't care to look. I am burned out on Uber, and I am working hard to get another business going so that I can stop driving Uber. Hope your 2017 is a great year!

In Chicago requests were low so I didn't get the bonus offered for rides between 8 and 12. There was no surge till 12:30. Highest surge I saw was 5.6. After 6 hrs. driving I made the same as I would make on an average day. This was my first NYEVE driving. It sucked. I won't be driving anymore holiday's. Just a waste of my time.

Seriously tho, My personal NYE experience in Charlotte NC sucked with Uber. My wife and I both drive and we had big plans for how we were going to tackle the holidays. For some reason, she was getting all of the guaranteed surges and promotions for all events from thanksgiving to NYE. I seen none on my app. I contacted Uber on three separate occasions and the only response I got was a vague "we understand your frustration and we thank you for your patience. Don't worry, you will be chosen to participate in one of our upcoming promotions soon." response. Because My wife got the promo surge, she was up $200 on NYE by 9pm. I was only up $40 by 11. around 12:30 the city went blood red, I turned on the app and got a ping with a surge of 8.5x. Picked up 2 girls who were going 25 miles into south Carolina and yes I accepted the trip after I found out the destination when I called. the city was gridlocked but the ladies were a block away and were nice enough to walk to my car. that one trip would have made my entire day on any other saturday, but, it took me almost 30 mins to get out of traffic and get to the highway. 30 mins later I finally arrive at the destination. I turned the app off amd headed back to charlotte as fast as I could but the surge started fading the closer I gotten to the city. by the time I made it back, it was almost 3am, the surge was gone. My wife made out like a bandit & I did ok, but I wonder how my night could have went if I didn't accept that first ride that knocked me out of the surge. I went home a little disappointed, but not defeated. luckily, I forgot to turn off my alarm for the next morning and woke up at 7am. I hit the snooze, looked at the uber app and seen the entire city surging at 4x, so I washed up and headed back out! It was like I was the only driver on the road. I was getting pings as far as 10 miles out, pings from the airport when I was on the highway because nobody was in queue, back to back pings, and everybody was going looong distance! so I made a nice recovery on New Years Day, +$150 by 2pm. I would be happy to make a third of that on a Sunday that the panthers aren't playing. I wish I could have stayed out longer but sandman was starting to throw haymakers at me. overall, I did ok. but it was a major letdown knowing that uber only offers guaranteed surges to "select" riders when all of the drivers are putting in the same work for their brand.

I drove for Lyft 7 from 7:30pm to 3am . My night was almost EXACTLY like yours - gridlock, cancellations, mayhem, and angry pissy drunk passengers.Anything that could go wrong DID go wrong. Even though I tried to stay in the zone I could only get 9 rides amounting to $98 plus one lonesome $1 tip. The surge was 450% with $75 per hour guaranteed from midnight to 3 am. Hmmm some how they say my rides didn't qualify for the guarantee...

I drive in ATL. I kept getting super low rated passengers who messed up my car just not bad enough to collect a cleaning fee! I ended up going home before 12 and only cleared about $60. I'm here in So Cal so I had high expectations. My night was not bad, but was expecting a lot better. A lot of Uber/Lyft drivers out that night, it seemed like every other car had a Uber/Lyft sign on it. Started my night around 8pm and gave my last ride at 2am, I was home by 2:45am. Surges where few and far apart.........I cleared $50.53 w/Lyft (6 rides)......$171.58 w/Uber (8 rides) and $26 in cash tips. Total $248.11

A few comments: 1) you need to post the video of that cop backing into the other car as he should be fired 2) speaking of Ozzie, I actually gave an uber ride to the former lead guitarist of his group, Zakk Wyld 3) regarding your request for feedback on my NYE ubering: it sucked, EXCEPT for 1 monster surge fare which was the best I ever had, but the overall night wasn't nearly as profitable as I had hoped. A few conclusions I have drawn based on my experience: 1) the surge pattern is totally different on NYE than a given weekend, try to find out where the huge parties are ahead of time and out of the way (not just downtown), 2) traffic is a killer, in my market driving is more profitable per mile than time, so even if you're at a high surge downtown you're not making that much, 3) supply AND demand, a lot of drivers make this mistake. You need to find high demand spots that aren't over saturated with drivers 4) hit or miss sometimes, remember that 1 mega fare can make up for a whole garbage shift, keep at it! 5) it can actually be more profitable sometimes to not go for the mega surge fares, the reason is that they are frequently very short runs cause nobody wants to pay $200 for a ride home (unless they're shitfaced beyond belief and then you're likely to get a puker). Is it worth the risk? You're more likely to get someone going long distance at a 3x than a 7x 6) if you do catch a mega sure CALL ASAP, if someone hears a real person they are a lot less likely to cancel (randy I know you don't like to call normally for the cancellation fee and I agree for the most part with the 1 exception being when the surge is mega high), and if you're stuck in horrible traffic which is likely for a high surge on NYE you can ask them where they're going so you know whether or not it's worth it (disclaimer: cancellations can get you deactivated), but if you're super selective and strategic about them there is a fine line to ride to maximize profits when sure is through the roof. I could probably add another half dozen tips here... Is there a way to provide a video response?

I worked in the Metro Detroit area from 8p to 5a and I made a total (minus gas) $170 working for UBER and LYFT, not the greatest. Surges helped a little. I can't say how disappointing I am to find out that I did not qualify for the bonus that I was expecting. The evening proved profitable, but at a cost no doubt. After much debate and convincing to my family, I opted in and headed out to earn what I was expecting to be a much higher earned income for the holiday. I learned a valuable lesson through this experience and I will not be so eager to drive on any given incentive-laden special occasion. Next year, I may not be so ready to change traditions in the future as the benefit did not outweigh the effort.

I am a new Uber driver in the Houston/Woodlands area. I've only been driving a week and a half. NYE I made $188 in tips and about $200 in fairs. I received a $100 bill and a $20 bill from two brothers whom I picked up from a party at a guy's house who lived in a wealthy neighborhood in Spring and as I dropped them off at their ranch in Magnolia, TX I received another ping to go back to that person's house where I picked them up from to pick up someone else. I accepted the ping! However, on the way there, Uber took it upon themselves to cancel that ping to "force" me to accept a ride from a person I was closer to than another driver, which caused me to lose out on what could have been another really good tip, and the girl I was supposed to pick up was not even there! She wanted me to wait on her to arrive there and when I said no, she canceled the call. I was supper pissed and gave Uber a peace of mind!!! They actually charged her the full fair as if I actually picked her up and drover her to the location where she was going. Yet, that didn't make up for the potential income I could have made in not only the tip from the call I had already accepted, but also the distance fair of where I had to take the person to from where I picked him up at. For the small area I stuck to, which was 45 minutes from home, I did very well. There were any big surges in that area, but I didn't care. I averaged almost 16.00 an hour for the hours I drove and what I made between tips and fairs. I would have done better had I been in Houston, but... I'da also had to deal with more b.s. with drunks, drugs and etc... and it wasn't worth it to me to get further from home to deal with unruly people. 10X in ST. Augustine Florida which is about 35 minutes drive south of Jacksonville, which was pretty dead, I took the drive hoping to catch the post firework surge. Got a ping at 5.9X. Between the event road blocks, bad alternate directions by the requester I ended up with a cancellation and a dead surge by the time it was over. I went back to Jacksonville with one single short 2.3x under my belt. $7.45 for that entire night. $43.00 for the entire week-end.

I dont understand why people dont just stop driving. If you were to unionize and quit driving all together. They will figure it out I promise. But what happens is all talk no action. This is the only way to get what you want with Uber. You are making them richer everyday.

Good night in Phoenix, I worked 12 hours and 37 minutes but did $491.83 plus $60 in cash tips that night. $269.29 in surge (most of that was from 3 good trips) and $100 uber bonus for doing 10 trips between midnight and 4 am.

south florida was a bust for me. made about the same as any other weekend and got screwed out of a 4x surge fare by uber and they pretty much told me tough luck after going back and forth with them the next day. so i just cut out early at like 2 am. thanks for all the tips and tricks

Mine totally sucked. I stopped by the house at 10:30 Pacific time and got notice that you were live streaming Randy. Watched it from the ride request through the accident to the cancelled ride and a little more. I should have taken it as a sign that I did not want to be out there! First of all, the streets were dead. I have never seen zero traffic like that. Getting over to Tacoma I was requested to pick up in downtown where the streets were blocked off for several blocks. Throngs of people stumbling around there for something called ?? First Night?? People were requesting rides from a block inside the barricaded area. The first one, I moved my car around a little and waited. Finally cancelled. Then the people were knocking on my window. Told them to order another one. More pings from inside the barricaded area. Could not connect. Finally left without picking up any rides. Then drove around totally empty streets. Headed home. Just past where I live is called Brown's Point. That area was surging and I took a request. Took me all the way to the official tip of Brown's point, up super narrow and steep streets and driveways and finally down a long, one lane driveway. Must have been a big party and a bunch of other Uber drivers trying to get in and turned around. Then I got the notice, my rider had cancelled. By this time, I was really super upset. Headed back towards my house in the "poor" section of town. Got another ping. Again, up a super narrow, winding, steep street (view of the Sound, ya know) and AGAIN--rider cancelled. How pissed off could I be? It was like these drunk, entitled rich fuckers were making a sport out of screwing Uber drivers. Headed towards home and left the app on just to see what would happen. Those same two addresses kept requesting rides, over and over and over. But I was done. Wasn't going to be baited again. According to Stride, my expenses for NYE were 51.70. I made ZERO. Won't be doing drunken surges any more. There HAS to be a better way to run an independent contracting Uber driving business!

Actually I decided to go home at 7 pm and just have dinner and champagne with my wife. I read all over the internet and forums that almost no one had a great night, yeah some people made $150-200, few maybe a little more, but that's not a whole lot more money to justify dealing with the NY madness. I don't work NYE . But, I do work New Years Day super early in the morning because as the drivers call it quits on New Years Day morning, I just start my day. Last year it was great for me. NYE in Durham was a complete disappointment. Made $92 from 10pm to 7am. Quite below my average for a weeknight. My wife begged me to stay home but the rent was due. By the end of the night I felt like uber had ripped me off. New Years resolution: find a new gig and stop being a sucker.

this is the video that makes me like you and what you doing with uber and you tube...as far as my new years eve was fantastic. ..I went to a "members only" party (very typical of california) of course you have to have a ticket( invitation) I took my wife with me we danced and drunk until 3 am we called an uber at that time I think the surge was 3.5 I felt bad for the guy and I gave him $10 tip..I never let him know that I am also an uber driver. As far as I am concerned no amount of money would've made me drive for uber that knight and I am glad you have the balls to tell the real story...probably the only one that made money that knight was uber..

I screwed up on the surge too and it really upset me. Plus I lost my incentive which was $125 for 12 rides between midnight and 4am. For some reason I thought it was for Sunday into Monday and didn't realize it until 2:30 am. So upset but next year I'll be on it! Beverly Hills and Ventura was 3.5x plus it was surging. Could have been a great night!

Here in Indianapolis the boost sucked for NYE !! 1.2 -1.4 The surges never even reached 3x, 4x, etc. Actually the medium to high surges have been disappearing for the last few weeks.

you need to know, if you make a wrong turn or miss an exit - passengers can EASILY go into the help section on their end, hit the button and uber AUTOMATICALLY adjusts their fare to the shortest route. no waiting for uber support. just explain it to them, but never end a trip early with people still in your car. uber is tracking passengers by GPS even after the trip has ended!

In Fort Wayne NYE was rather subdued. I worked from 5 p.m. on the 31st to 10:30 a.m. on New Year's Day, getting one ping after the other, and surge times were either the same or worse than any other Saturday night. I made about 250 bucks, including tips. When the heck is Juneau going to launch!?!

In Jacksonville the surge seems to never go over 3X. I drive only on Sat night and that's the only reason I was driving NYE. NYE I don't remember getting any surge. I drove until about 6am and managed to clear around $200. Considering hourly earnings this is my record Sat night. My record Sat night is $235 but I drove until 10am Sunday morning. Bottom line is the actual earnings do not justify all the hype put out by Uber.

Saturation, Denver was a shit show too. I made only 180+ for 12 hours on Eve. I literally made double that on Sunday, and made over 210 on Previous Monday for aprox 8-10hours. This is becoming a sheep job, Everyone follows the herd. Between 1am and 2 am 4/5 Rides were canceled, I wish I just took the night off it was not worth the stress and bs. Not only that no one tipped at all on NYE, But on Sunday oh yeah I made bank. Sadly this is mostly Uber's doing, especially with the Update on the Pax App and it causing all sorts of pick up destination problems. They really IMO have shot themselves in the foot and have just created huge momentum for us to take advantage of and spread Juno like wild fire.

I'm in Fort Collins and there are so many drivers coming up from Denver, Longmont, Loveland, and Greeley looking for fares that the weekend nights really haven't surged hardly at all lately. If you want to drive an extra two hours just to make regular $3.60 minimum fares this is the place.

My NYE sucked. I got the first surges in Marin County after midnight and they were 1.2X only, even though they showed bright red on the map. So after over an hour I went North to Petaluma, which was surging big red. I was in downtown Petaluma and Uber kept sending me requests for Novato, 20 min away with no surge. I kept refusing, 3 times in a row before I finally got a surge in Petaluma at over 2X. Then I kept receiving pings for Novato (still 20 min away) or Rohnert Park (also 20 min away and also not surging). I got one more surge in Petaluma and 2 SELECT. I made $104 in 2h27min with 8 trips. One rider was high and having a bad trip and started yelling gibberish in the car, which scared me. During my last ride, which had me drop people off in 3 different locations, one guy threw up in his sweater, so luckily it was all contained. But it was a very frustrating night driving for Uber. It was clear that Uber did not want to send me surge requests.

i been driving 3 years too in Indianapolis. And there was a 1.4x boost with that being said the highest surge got to about 3.9x. I am glad you made the comment about more drivers because this was by far the worse Nye I had ever had money wise. I made 180 dollars and that was driving the entire day. I made more money 2 weeks ago driving a normal Saturday. Nowhere close to what I made past new years. Extremely dissapointing. Weird thing is it surged lower then normal Saturdays just really bad money.

My NYE was not any different than any other Saturday for me. I ended up making about $400 for the night, which is a little higher than most Saturday's. If I made this much any other night of the week I would have been very happy but I wasn't disappointed.

I made out pretty good on New Year's Eve. I grossed about $400.00 with the $60.00 in tips I made. The whole map was surged in my area at least 85-90% of the night. Miami Beach surged until 7am on New Year's Day.
