- Hip hop for a black character in like 1580 - Merchandise is cheap anime convention knockoffs, and also blatant copyright infringement - Copied a modern day real life banner, which was also blatant copyright infringement - Geisha's didn't even exist until like 1750, so why is there a geisha statue? They're really nailing it.

Considering records of Yasuke predate Thomas Lockley by a good four hundred years, he didn't create Yasuke. He did sell bullshit though. Yasuke's existence has been attested by different PRIMARY sources. He lived and was a "samurai" of Nobunaga, but his status as a samurai wasn't based on being a warrior, (which should be evident given that he was just a servant for someone else before being raised to his position) it was based on fascination. He was just a unique looking (in japan) individual who interested a very powerful man who decided to keep him around.

As a Korean, I do not know much about Japanese history. However, I do understand that samurai were not merely warriors wielding katanas but members of the noble class. Additionally, samurai did not wield their swords against just anyone. Being of noble status, when samurai drew their katanas, they would face their opponent, introduce their family names and noble titles, and then engage in a formal duel. Acting recklessly and killing people indiscriminately, as Yasuke does in Assassin's Creed: Shadows, is not the behavior of a samurai but rather that of a barbarian.

Additionally, this game has more than a few glaring issues. 1. First of all, cherry blossoms bloom in the spring, and rice is harvested in the fall. However, in the trailer, farmers are shown harvesting rice with cherry blossoms in the background. 2. The trailer features a bird that appears to be a crane. In East Asia, cranes are winter migratory birds, flying to Korea and Japan during the winter. Yet in the trailer, cranes are shown during the cherry blossom season. 3. The structure of the rice paddies resembles those found in Vietnam. 4. The kunoichi is carrying a katana? Ninjas are essentially spies who conceal their identities. Carrying a katana is practically announcing, "I am a ninja!" 5. In medieval Japanese society, only samurai and nobles were allowed to carry weapons like katanas. Yet Nioh, who is not of the samurai class, is shown carrying a katana. This alone would be a serious crime, leading to her immediate arrest and questioning about how she came to possess the weapon. As a Korean, I can say that this game is a prime example of poorly researched and inaccurate "Weeaboo". While it is set in Japan, it mixes elements from various countries such as Korea, China, Vietnam, and Myanmar, resulting in a grotesque mishmash. I cannot speak for how the Japanese might feel about this game, but as an Asian, I find this kind of shoddy Orientalism extremely offensive. Ubisoft should have conducted proper research on Japan before creating Assassin's Creed: Shadows.

Unlike Europe, East Asia saw the early emergence of states with highly sophisticated administrative systems and complex political structures. In East Asia, a murder is never just a simple crime; it has significant political repercussions. In medieval Japan, where numerous daimyos maintained a constant state of political tension, a murder could easily escalate into war. For example, if a samurai under Oda Nobunaga killed a samurai of another daimyo, it would immediately trigger a war between Nobunaga and the other daimyos. East Asia was not a society where one could nonchalantly kill villains as shown in the trailer. Even in Joseon Korea, which had an early centralized system where all power was unified under a central bureaucracy, a murder was never just a simple crime. It led to the complete downfall of the bureaucratic faction involved.

So let me list it a tad bit if you guys are interested, 1) Yasuke had three pages of documents about him in history: one from a samurai serving Oda, one from his former owners, and lastly, a historian. In all of them, Yasuke is treated like an exhibition animal. Oda is far mildest, as he is genuinely fascinated by Yasuke's skin color and artistic capabilities. Others, not so much. Even his life was spared because the enemy leader perceived him as a clueless animal. 2) So where does this Yasuke hypes come from? The answer is a white male "author" who has ties with a Japanese university wrote a 400-page or something book about Yasuke and got popular with western folks; however, it revealed that he also "edited" the wiki page numerous times with his alt accounts to elevate Yasuke and put some bullshit "facts" in there. Currently, he has deleted his social media accounts and has gone hiding while Japanese people bombard the university with questions and contempt. 3) Ubisoft stole a banner art from a non-profit organization in Japan and used it in their game and videos without asking permission; they probably thought this was the historical one. 4) Ubisoft stole the katana art from One-piece. 5) Ubisoft messed up many common details, such as "Tori gates," which are temple entrances, and used them as village gates (They found it cute, perhaps?) or Sakura blossom season and Japan's silver grasses bloom were completely different while they put them in the same timeline. 6) Also, some of paintings and artwork belong to different eras, glaringly obvious in some cases. 7) Then, there are Ubisoft higher-ups who claim they were filling in Japanese history while their mission is to help players "learn history," which goes against the "Historical Fiction" perspective. 8) Lastly, there are also other mess-ups, such as promotion goodies they sent to streamers and content creators, that are total garbage, have simple writing mistakes, or are completely irrelevant, and it is exhausting to list them all. Here, thanks for reading, and have good luck, potato. This is not a copy-paste, so yeah, fml, I guess.

Point 7 is wrong. Ubisoft always grounded their stories in very real people and events and built their stories around them to strengthen their point that they were telling "hidden truths" in history, that's the point of the first games. They even had in game tours in origins, precisely to help in learning real history, with no reference to AC, just real historical facts. The teams might have changed but them using history for their narrative is neither new nor bad, it only turned to shit because of their writers, researchers and scenario writers.

It's actually a very good idea, and I don't think they changed (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't touched an AC game since Unity), the way they use megascan to import a very accurate version of a building or structure into their game engine, and they make much "correction" after on it. So when you see Notre-Dame, or Venise, the Florencia house, Rome Coliseum... It is actually a very accurate version of the real building. A friend of mine played again AC II Brotherhood before going on a trip to Venise, and he told me how he 'was "familiar" with the city and didn't get lost at anytime. We can ofc argue that Venise is an exception, since the very particular state of this city makes it inalterable in time. You can't build or transform radically any building in the city. So the Venise of the XVth century is pretty much the same city today. Something that you can't say about any other city like Florencia, Paris etc... In those city, only a very few historical building and structure haven't changed with time, but the rest is very different from what it used to be 1 century ago, and even more 5 century earlier (French Révolution, wars, baron Haussmann...).

We Japanese are angry not because they put black people in the leading roles, but because of the lack of respect in many aspects and the attitude that they don't even think it's wrong. We are so overly concerned about poly-college, but you didn't think this was a bad idea? That is my honest impression. Do they look down on Japanese people without recognizing discrimination? I've seen Japanese people saying they are ok with this game as long as they call it "Isekai" "fantasy" or none historically accurate. But since Ubisoft continues to say that this is historically accurate is when people are having an issue. They even mentioned that the sad part of all this is Ubisoft only see's Yasuke as just a "Black man" not even as a human being. That's the saddest / ironically part. Ubisoft gives 2 shits if this is accurate or not, they are trying to bend the knee to the woke movement to make money because their games ain't selling.

Its also important for an AC game to be historically accurate. The whole setting stands on a fundament of "this is the history you've seen in the story books, and its all true... but there was actually more than that happening behind the scenes." Inserting fantasy bs invalidates the setting and they've been doing it since Origins. Which is also why I haven't played the series since origins.

He replied something along the lines of "I like the fact that the game is about historical Japan, but it looks like the whites are at it again", in reference to taking a foreign persective on Japan. It's a shame how far the AC team has fallen. AC Origins had this really neat history tour you could do in the game that was pretty much a full on Egyptology experience. It was so good even Egyptologists were giving it praise and some teacher used snippets of the game to actually teach some of the topics... Now we have this sad excuse of a game.

Listen, there’s a difference between accuracy and authenticity. Ghost of Tsushima wasn’t accurate, but it was very authentic that’s why people loved it. People don’t necessarily need accuracy they want authenticity. When you have actual talented creators, putting their sorrow, passion, and beauty into art, it has no choice but to show itself. But when you see something like Ac shadows. It’s not only inauthentic, but it’s inaccurate and disingenuous. There is no soul put into it so it shows immediately. When art doesn’t have any sorrow, passion, or beauty. It has no soul. After all, what is Art if there isn’t any sorrow, passion or beauty? Without those things you have nothing.

the biggest irony is, they could literaly do what onimusha 4 did, with hideyoshi as the big bad. but make it ninjas(assassins) vs samurai(templars). OR do the rorouni kenshin route, and make it set, kinda like AC3, but focus on when the samurai fell. with your work being in the shadows, assassinating important templars to push the meiji restoration foward. the fact they fcked it up so much. for no good reason is insane to me. what makes it worse, is how for YEARS people asked ubisoft to just make AC in japan, and they kept saying they wouldnt because it would be boring. even though, their story was the literal ninjas vs samurai down to the T.

From what I've read about this Yasuke, I understand both sides. Ubisoft does what they've always done which is to get the historically documented portions of their games as correct as possible then inject their own fiction into the gaps. However... Ubisoft clearly didn't do their due diligence this time around. There are so many inaccuracies regarding things that are blatant fact. Judging from the fact that Yasuke only stayed in Japan for 3 years, he would've most likely been an honorary samurai at best (if there even was such a thing). It took a very long time to become a samurai. Children born into this status and profession receiving their first real weapon at the age of 5-7. A 13-year-old at an academy would train for 12 hours/day. A day's training would involve things like Kendo, archery, horseback riding, Jujitsu, calligraphy, literature, general studies, mental and physical conditioning, and combined Kendo/Jujitsu practice. If Yasuke only stayed in Japan for 3 years, this would pretty much mean he basically had to become a samurai almost over night which wouldn't be possible.

In Japan, when people want to show their opposition to something and start a signature campaign, they are told that they will be lucky if they manage to collect 100 signatures in a day, and that collecting 3,100 signatures in a month is very difficult and practically impossible. However, this signature campaign to prevent the release of Assassins Creed Shadows is on an unprecedented scale. In 50 minutes, more than 200 people came together to sign the petition to stop the release of Assassins Creed Shadows and, in one day, more than 2,917 people joined the petition, which collected 90,449 signatures in one month. A huge number of signatures, which would normally take as long as 29 years to collect, were gathered in just one month. We hope that the anger and passion of the Japanese people who made this possible will be conveyed to people overseas. Many Japanese who have not yet joined the petition campaign have also expressed their indignation on the Internet. This is a story started by Thomas Lockley and UBI Soft, right? Don't shirk your responsibility for trying to alter Japanese history and make it absurd. Tomas Lockley, UBI Soft and all those abroad who believed their lies and continued to criticise Japan should be aware of the anger and indignation of the Japanese people. Don't ignore the anger of the Japanese people. People all over the world should know the full extent of what this fraudster and his gaming company have done to Japan's history. The Japanese Internet is full of these cries. Please, tell the world why we Japanese are angry with Tomas Lockley and UBI Soft. We Japanese who are not good at English need the help of people from overseas. Please join us in signing this petition to express our anger and let others overseas know about it. Tell the world about Tomas Lockley and UBI Soft's bizarre obsession with altering Japanese history. Please protect our country, Japan, from this kind of alteration and fabrication. Please help us. We never thought that foreign people with such a terrible plan would quietly sneak into Japan from across the sea. Every time I watch the daily news updates about Tomas Lockley and UBI Soft in Japanese videos, I feel fear. In the Japanese language video I saw today, it said that Tomas Lockley has been found to be hiding the fact that Jesuit missionaries planned with merchants from Europe to take 50,000 Japanese people to Europe as slaves. And while concealing this fact, Thomas Lockley falsely announced the number of African slaves in Japan as 6,000, which was none other than Yasuke, who was an attendant to manage and carry small tools such as parasols and shoes owned by Oda Nobunaga, and said that buying African slaves was fashionable in Japan at the time. It was written that he claimed to foreign media that buying African slaves was fashionable in Japan at that time. Tomas Lockley is also said to have told these lies. It was not the Jesuits or other Christian missionaries who started enslaving Africans. It was the Japanese who first started trafficking and enslaving Africans in the world. He claims it all started in Japan, he says, a lie. Thomas Lockley also ignored the contents of the missionaries' trafficking contracts and diaries preserved in Japanese history museums and libraries and wrote: "The missionaries never bought a single slave, neither in Japan nor in any other country. So Yasuke was not a slave but a bodyguard. The missionaries were against human trafficking and slavery because they saw the Japanese buying many slaves. The missionaries were opposed to a world without trafficking and slavery." It has been found that. Japanese people are angry that Tomas Lockley and UBI Soft are trying to mess up the history of our Japanese ancestors. Because we have found out that Tomas Lockley and UBI Soft are planning to rewrite all the wrong actions of the European people in the past as if they were done by the Japanese. Please, anyone who reads this text, let people in all parts of the world know about this terrible plan by Tomas Lockley and UBI Soft. Please help Japan. The Japanese language we Japanese use may seem unique and unusual to the rest of the world, but as Japanese we absolutely cannot allow Japanese history to be twisted by people abroad with lies like this. @@Ky2-420 I am very sorry if you believe what Tomas Lockley wrote in his imaginative fill-in-the-blanks book about Yasuke. Tomas Lockley told the foreign media that he had read and researched the vast number of history books on the warlords that remain in Japan. But to the Japanese media he said the exact opposite. Tomas Lockley told the Japanese I came to Japan as an English teacher at a primary school in Tottori Prefecture and worked at a Japanese primary schools. I then went to work in the law department of a Japanese university as a professor teaching law, but I still cannot read Japanese very well after living in Japan all my life for more than 20 years. Because I don't want to learn Japanese. I thought it would be a hassle to learn Japanese. But five years ago I came across Yasuke on Wikipedia and decided to write a book about him. I wanted a lot of money. So I filled in the blanks of Yasuke's life with my imagination and transcribed the feats of Japanese warlords, turning him into a legendary Samurai that no one in Japan knows, winning battle after battle. Everything was rewritten to make it look like the Japanese used Africans as slaves in large numbers, and as if Yasuke was known in Japan as the great Samurai. Few people abroad can read historical documents written in Japanese as well as I can. There is a huge amount of historical material in Japan, but only Japanese people understand Japanese, so few people overseas know that Yasuke was not really involved in Japanese history at all. So the five years of preparation all went well. Thanks to that, my book was accepted as interesting all over the world, sold a lot and made me a huge amount of money. Japanese people who are not good at English won't be able to stop me. I've already written my next new book. Just like when I wrote about Yasuke. I am sure that this new book I wrote will also sell well all over the world. I will get a lot of money again. Tomas Lockley laughed in front of the Japanese. This is the man you believe Tomas Lockley is, a self-proclaimed historian studying the life of Yasuke and Japanese history.

Man, this is not about westerners being disrespectful to Japanese national history and culture, this is about some cultural Marxists spraying their woke message trying and intentionally pushing their narratives on everything and everyone. They did this shit to European culture without hesitation, there was a series about an English queen, and they made her black, despite her literally being white historically. These people do not give a shit about anyone's culture.

- People walking through the center of a Torii gate. In Shinto religion Torii gates mark entrances or pathways into sacred land. You are meant to walk under either side of the gate but not the center, as that is where Kami are meant to pass. Even though I do not practice Shinto religion I know that much, and I'm also not a Japanese historian. - Chinese Lanterns and questionably un-Japanese architecture in feudal Japan. - Naoe is wearing a katana on her back. to wear a sword in public was to mark yourself as a warrior or samurai, if the intent is to remain inconspicuous this is like slapping a giant target on her own forehead. As women were extremely rare as warriors or samurai. -Naoe is confirmed to be an ahistorical daughter to Fujibayashi Nagato, who only had a son. Fujibayashi Yasumasa. They've blatantly inserted her into the game as his daughter as he is considered one of the most famous ninja in Japan. - Yasuke is wearing full battle armor in a town when there is no combat taking place. Full battle armor is not typically worn outside of established battlegrounds or during assaults on enemy positions or parades. Considering he's just standing around in town it makes him stand out even more than his complexion. - Stereotypical hip hop for a black guy. Hip Hop wasn't invented for another 220+ years and that doesn't really fit for someone who would've been natively African, not African-American. - He is supposedly a super experienced warrior despite only working as a servant (likely a laborer who moved things around for his boss) despite his service to Nobunaga only being about 15 months. Despite this he has no recorded combat record other than surrendering to Akechi Mitsuhide's forces. The time to train a man who is not perfectly fluent in Japanese in both reading and writing, and also teach him horseback riding and the skill to utilize several weapons would be frankly absurd considering he was tasked as Oda's sword caddy. There would've been little time for him to train in the first place. - Ninja and Samurai were not disparate or separate groups, many clans operated both ninja and samurai. Sometimes working together. Many of the most famous ninja were both. The TL:DR on this is Ubisoft's historical advisors are morons, and all I can say to them is *CITATION NEEDED* P.S. The anger toward the ashitorical nature of the game's setting and characters is that despite the fantasy and sci-fi elements in previous Assassin's Creed games if you took all of that out the settings were genuine to the history of each place. Shadows though...💀

Honestly, you could forgive the "Naoe being Nagato's daughter instead of a son" thing, and the "Yasuke's a samurai instead of a retainer at best, if he actually existed" issue. This is a universe where the Catholic Church has control over a bunch of supernatural/alien artifacts. Historical accuracy is already out the window, in the air, and approaching escape velocity. Everything ELSE, however...Yeah...To say nothing of the fact that it's a clear half-arsed cash grab. More importantly, it's a Ubisoft game. Nobody should be pre-ordering this. After all, look at the last few games they've released. Their trailers show SOME promise, but I wouldn't touch this at all until it's released and we've seen the actual game firsthand. Just keep in mind this is a $130 game they wanted everyone to pre-order before showing ANY actual gameplay.

Here is the problem with Yasuke himself... Not much is known about him, no one even knows his true name, only the one he was given by Oda Nobunaga. Oda was only impressed by him because he was about 6"2 and Black which he had never seen before. Yasuke's military "career" was one of utter shame.... he fought for BOTH Oda Nobunaga and his son Nobutada and LOST with BOTH of his Daimyo's committing Seppuku. This part is a DIRECT HISTORICAL QUOTE from Mitsuhide Akechi, the Daimyo that defeated Oda, his son, and Yaskue: "A black man whom the visitor [Valignano] sent to Nobunaga went to the house of Nobunaga's son after his death and was fighting for quite a long time, when a vassal of Akechi approached him and said, "Do not be afraid, give me that sword", so he gave him the sword. The vassal asked Akechi what should be done with the black man, and he said, "A black slave is an animal (bestial) and knows nothing, nor is he Japanese, so do not kill him, and place him in the custody at the cathedral of Padre in India" That was the last thing anyone has recorded about Yasuke.

I believe that Akechi said that because Yasuke gave up his sword - likely the one that Oda gave him - just because he was asked. Yasuke didn't know what it all meant. He probably just fought because he was told to, and not out of loyalty. His head wasn't worth as a trophy, he would have been treated like a common prisoner to be sold off as a slave, but he apparently was already a slave and he never rose from it. Akechi gave Yasuke back to the Jesuits to try to gain their favor.

Issue here is that, if the Assassin Creed franchise prides itself as a purely fictional fiction then it'd be fine. People would disregard it and still have fun playing the game - as it is understood as "pure fiction". But the franchise has earned itself as a reputation for its "historical accuracy" - where the plot and story are, allegedly, based on the plot's setting's relative actual history and culture. And this is where we have a problem - they're taking some guy's fiction novel as basis. And how they fact checked it? Wikipedia. And it was the same guy who edited the Wikipedia page numerous times to sell his own fiction book. A huge L to Ubisoft.

The catana is also upside down on the stand. The blade of the sword in the scabbard should be pointing up while resting on the stand, not down. He probably is not a native English speaker, so I wouldn't say this is a massive mistake as to "accuse him of being wrong" rather than just a miss-translation. Second of all, this is true, Japan steel was quite impure, traditional Japanese katanas were made using a type of steel called tamahagane, which was produced from iron sand in a smelting process. Tamahagane is not uniformly pure and contains both high and low carbon steel. This resulted in steel with varying quality, which some might consider "bad" compared to modern homogeneous steel. Needless to say, this meant that the maintenance for them was high, including doing what the guy you're replying to said.

If Yasuke was a real Samurai he would've committed sudoku
@BloodrealmX
@BloodrealmX 29 күн бұрын
That actually is genuinely one of the pieces of evidence that demonstrate that he wasn't granted samurai status: when Oda Nobunaga died at Honno-ji, Yasuke would have offed himself as well if he were a samurai serving him. Other pieces of evidence include Yasuke not having a family name and the fact there's no record of him ever receiving the status even though there are many records of other foreigners receiving it during the same time period.

Associate Professor Thomas Lockly, Nihon University, Faculty of Law, allegedly edited the English wikipedia page on Yasuke from 2015 to 2019 under the username 'tottoritom'. Tottori is the name of a place in Tottori Prefecture where he first taught as an English teacher. The user page suggests it is him and gives a detailed edit history It would be too dumb if it really was him, but some of the editorial details include things that would be impossible for anyone but him, such as Thomas's 2016 paper being cited as the source in 2015 (before peer review, of course) There have also been ridiculous moves such as promoting his own book and creating his own wikipedia article, which was noted and removed as a result.

@@machinedieselx4767 Without seeing the actual AC:S, it is impossible to say for sure, but it is possible, as Yasuke's characterisation in the West is almost entirely under his influence. However, Thomas Lockley has denied any involvement in AC:S (although I don't know if this is true). My point is that Thomas himself may have used wikipedia to authorise himself and Yasuke. That the rise of Yasuke content was largely due to his novel in 2019, and that he himself laid the groundwork for it. There seems to be no doubt here, at least circumstantially.

The latest news is The English WIKI page for this black samurai was heavily edited by a UK professor teaching in Japan who is writing a biography of this black samurai and is also an advisor to this new UBI project. He tries to edit with multiple accounts and even add his own content to make his stories more relevant to the WIKI content! (Japanese page included! He secretly shut down social media and deleted WIKI when everyone was angry at UBI! Bad shit is that his edits are quoted by many people.

The problem is not the inclusion of Yasuke, it’s the fact that they are blatantly and condescendingly pandering in their execution while also trying to claim historical accuracy.

Not only this, but accusations(that have not been verified as of yet), have been thrown around that the entirety of Yasuke's story and how it got popularized has been misconstrewed by 1 guy basically reading a wikipedia article that was falsified, quoting it in a book, and the book getting popular.
@SeraphArmaros

More specifically, some historian did all the necessary research, determined there wasn't much to go on, and decided to fill in the blanks with his headcanon. Then he wrote what's essentially historical fiction around the guy, and everyone cited it as the source material for the research afterwards as if it was non-fiction. A lot of the Wikipedia articles cite him as if he's a legit source.

that's a fact not just an accusation. Thomas Lockley took 3 sentences from historical writings and made a 400pages book out of it. yasuke was never a samurai and he barely stayed in japan as a slave for a year then got sold somewhere else

@@Ted_Kenzoku No he wasn't a slave. There's a mention in Nobunaga's biography that he has a wage like other retainers. Then after Nobunaga's death, he went to Nijo Castle gets defeated, then gets spared to be sent back to a temple.
