If I'm expected to spend £60 on a game on release, then I expect to have the game. Not day 1 patches or horrendous game ending bugs or a promise it may be patched later. The product is not fit for purpose if it is released like this and should have been delayed.

Let's be honest. We got better quality games before online patches became a thing. We are basically guinea pigs used as testers for all games now. Look back at the pre-online era of games. We actually got better quality games on the PS1 because if the game was released with game breaking glitches and bugs the cost incurred by the company having to recall every game shipped would be huge. We need to stop buying these special editions that offer early access and day 1 release.

sorry but does no one find it problematic that when the time came for asian representation to come to assassin's creed, that they have to share their time in the limelight with black representation? that ubisoft had to find a very specific and frankly scholastically questionable footnote in japanese history to feature just because it had a black man they could make the hero? but past games set in american and european countries have their protagonist be native to those countries? and people find nothing wrong with this?
@morgantaylor84
@morgantaylor84 Ай бұрын
Afro Samurai existed a decade ago doing the EXACT same thing that they're complaining about. No one cared. The people that care now ARE NOT the people of Japan. As a matter of fact the complaints the people of Japan actually have about Assassin's Creed Shadows are mainly NOT the race of the protagonist, but the inaccuracies in the historic representation of their culture in the time period it's supposed to be set in. The people on the Japanese version of the platform that used to be known as twitter "complaining" about the race thing were actually 99% google translated complaints from bot accounts pretending to be native Japanese people complaining about it. But to absolutely destroy your argument, Assassin's Creed Black Flag. Protagonist is a white guy in a historically NOT white setting. WHY IS THAT ONE OKAY BUT THIS ONE ISN'T? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE! Oh and don't use "there were white people there at the time" as an argument because the black guy you're talking about, by your own admission, was also in Japan at the time the game is set so that argument doesn't work.

The major issue with Shadows isn’t so much that they picked a black person to play main character. It’s that they went out of their way to pick him. None of the actual Assassins we played before as did existed back then, but he did.
@Windmelodie
@Windmelodie Ай бұрын
And that is the issue that many Japanese players have. Yasuke is historically debated and most definitely wasn't a samurai, yet AC tries to market it as historically accurate, the "first black samurai" kind of thing. Not to mention a bunch of culturally insensitive things (like the misuse of family crests, textures just ripped from google images, broken Torii, wrong kanji spelling, Chinese instruments in trailers and much more). The issue is not with having a Black protagonist, but everything else around it feels extremely disrespectful towards Japanese culture and history, while trying to blame critics for just being bigoted. Oh, and let's not forget the bots that were initially used to write praising comments under their most recent trailer in an attempt to drown out actual criticism... It's scummy af and if they continue doing what they are doing, then they deserve every bit that is coming for them.

Ubisoft only have themselves to blame. They chased the live service model and failed. They betrayed gamers with those asinine comments about not owning games. They make too many disposable triple A games that then mean genuinely great games fail. They are stretching their workforce too thinly. I usually love your work Scott, but hand waving away people's concerns with Yasuke as some sort of racist thing from a "certain portion of the internet" is completely disingenuous. People aren't disappointed with Yasuke because he's black-otherwise you would have seen the same outrage with Assassins Creed Origins (and you didn't see any controversy with that game). They're upset because there's no reason why an Assassins creed game set in Feudal japan doesn't feature a Feudal Japanese man as the headliner when the series has always featured and honored the people and customs from the location it's set in. It's a disingenuous take that belittles the reason why a lot of people are deciding not to preorder the game. It lessens your credibility to not even attempt to see where a LOT of people are coming from.
@w1nch3ster1
@w1nch3ster1 Ай бұрын
Well put. Having a legitimate discussion about this is tainted by people desperately wanting to not be called racist. This has nothing to do with that even though there are obviously people that feel that way, same as the idiots jumping on Yotei cause it's a female protag now. Extremists ruin it for everyone. It's just one side of that extremist coin actually gets listened to.

I mean we have a Female Japanese Lead alongside him so really I don’t see why him being there is an issue, I think if they had just made Yasuke the only Main Playable character it would be bad, but even then I feel with a Female Japanese Lead alongside him being playable the idea of the man needing to be a Japanese Male isn’t really needed tbh.

I’m more concerned with the fact that Yasuke is an actual historical figure. Whether or not he was an actual samurai is irrelevant. The fact that he can be seen in historical documents is the problem. The main characters of AC has never been historical figures. They’ve always been nameless background characters that move through the shadows of history. That’s the whole point of the order. If they wanted Yasuke in the game, then have him like they did Da Vinci, but not as the main character. What’s worse is the Chinese architecture, using symbols for Japanese families and groups without permission, featuring landmarks and statues without permission, and the whole mess with the merchandising, it’s no wonder I’ve heard rumors that Japan is considering banning the game outright.

Yasuke being black isn't the problem. It's not being a Japanese character that's the problem. Imagine if this game was telling the story of Naoe and William Adams (another historical character, but a white guy).... that would be equally as bad, but most importantly: it's not what gamers want! We wanted and expected a Jin Sakai type (Ghost of Tsushima).

The thing most people never really mention about Ubisoft games is that they never really stay their full price for long. Like take AC Shadows for example. If it released this year you’d regularly be able to find it as much as half off a few months later. Same can probably be said about Star Wars Outlaws this year. Why would someone pay full price for a game when they know a few months after launch they can get it significantly cheaper, since that’s pretty much Ubisoft’s MO?

Ubisoft's reputation was already rocky even leading up to this year (several online communities I'm in already use memes when talking about Ubisoft), but the whole save file issues with Outlaws, and yes, the Yasuke thing IS a factor, because even many Japanese gamers are annoyed at their chance for proper representation being ripped away from them (all the famous names from that period of Japan, and they choose the one black guy, also feels a little off to be going around as a foreigner beating up the natives). Combine this with the announcement of Ghost of Yotei which has generated way more hype, and no wonder the company is struggling. One other factor seems to be a gaming consumer trend away from AAA titles, with AA or indie games becoming increasingly popular because they don't cost loads of money and often have more enjoyable gameplay than most AAA titles. Why pay £70 for 20-30 hours' gameplay when you can spend half that or less for the potential of hundreds of hours?

The fact that the video game industry is the only industry that puts out unfinished products for full price with 'plans' to fix it with later patches instead of releasing it in a near finished condition is kind of disgusting given what AAA games charge per game. I mean do musicians charge a premium for a half-finished album, or an author's release their work that hasn't been edited with assurances it *will* be edited and 'patched' over the next few months/YEARS? The fact they still act like this is acceptable behaviour is abysmal. I mean patches are just supposed to fix bugs that weren't found in original alpha and beta quality testing, not to make a barely functionable game playable, especially not for the price they expect us to pay. Indie games get a bit of a pass because they generally come from small teams and limited resources, but AAA publishes with big budgets, teams and YEARS of experience have absolutely no excuse for this BS. The Day One Patch is pretty much game developers admitting the game wasn't finished to a good standard at launch and they knew it, but released it anyway. How is this something we just grumble about but put up with? Why aren't they expected to do better for our hard earned money especially since they shouldn't be charging so much for digital copies of games since they don't have to pay to manufacture physical copies in mass quantities like they used to anymore? I mean for a standard AAA alone you're charged $90+ AUD, whereas an 'ultimate' edition that adds a couple of skins, guns, artbook or soundtrack (ie all *digital* content) etc can go for $130+ AUD. It just feels so ridiculous to pay more for digital games when physical games they had to pay to be manufactured in bulk were a fraction of the price 10-20 years ago. I mean there should obviously be some allowance for inflation but the pricing are just ridiculous and greedy at this point. And that's not even mentioning micro transactions. Game developers have gotten so greedy, because they think they can just take gamers for all the money they're willing to spend as long as they create a half-way decent game and it sucks. *Note before someone mentions it:* Yes, I know game passes exist, but I'm exclusively a PC gamer and it takes me *months* to finish a single game so I prefer to buy it outright and play it when I can and not worry about the subscription fee, which means I tend to save all my steam credits for the big sales and rarely if ever pre-order anything I don't know I'll have the time to play the hell out of it immediately.

I urge anyone who's actually excited about the inevitable trainwreck that will be AC Shadows to just play ghost of tsushima. The new AC looks so much like a ubi reskin of GOT. A lot of people call it the best assassins creed game never made, and I can definitely see why. One of the only games I can consider basically flawless and 10/10

I loved all the legacy AC games, but when they started chasing the Witcher 3 they lost my money on AC titles, same goes for the Division, I loved the first one but the 2nd lost the atmosphere, Watchdogs tried to be something it's not and the last good Farcry was on the 360/PS3. In my opinion Ubisoft should stop chasing trends and make good quality games that break new ground like the original AC did back in the day.

I used to love Ubisoft, but Farcry New Dawn was trash, Farcry 6 was mid, I'm getting exhausted with the samey bloated Assassins Creed formula, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora had some of the most bafflingly stupid game design ideas I've ever seen, and Star Wars Outlaws didn't look even remotely interesting. The only good thing to come from Ubisoft the past three years was Prince of Persia Lost Crown.

I think it's time for everyone to stop giving games companies "good will" based off of happy memories for games release over a decade ago. It's not just Ubisoft. It's Konami, EA, Activision, Blizzard, and so many more. They all DID used to make amazing games. Hell, Activision was founded after splitting from Atari, with the purposes of giving the devs more credit. But sadly, for one reason or another, so many lagacy companies just aren't good anymore. The standards for them is so low, even a mediocre game is considered a "success". And sadly for me personally, this includes my personal favorite, Bioware.

Spent most most of my lifetime playing Ubi games - Prince of Persia all versions, Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon old ones, Splinter Cell all versions, HoMM 3-7, Rainbox Six Siege, The Division(s), Fay Cry 1-5 ... it goes on, but still hating the company for two reasons - Ubi Launcher and NO regional pricing for games when forced to purchase in their store. Shadows coming into Steam, not a surprise to me...

Seriously? They murdered breakpoint too early, we got a bait and switch with a prince of persia game no one asked for, got a ubisoft skinned trend chasing shooter no one asker for getting lost with all the others, a SW game that could have been better and the ONE game we have been begging to have for over a decade now they still managed to screw up and they have the gull to wonder whats wrong?!?!? I have loved Ubisoft for years and dam they have talented folks that can make beautiful and great gamed but OMG the stupid decisions they make are maddening! Whats worse is that it really would not take much to win customers over again, give us the remake prince of persia they promised, give us wildlands 2, pick up where SW1313 left off and fix AC shadows. Also it wouldn't hurt to fire all of upper management THEN go private lol

Ubisoft is just another prime example of failure from the top. The greatest devs will still put out broken busted games when they're strained in crunch because the execs just want cash cow after cash cow. You'd think after launches like No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk which took years to recover from that devs would get the proper time for a game to cook, but that's just not the case. More and more we're getting games, especially single player games that follow a live service approach of get the game out there and we'll fix it post launch. Yet the higher ups seemingly don't get that a disastrous launch will turn away gamers from given the game a second chance if it launches and months go by with NO progress on making it playable. Prime example is NFS Unbound is broken AF with bugs from them adding drag racing and lane keep assist and Hot Pursuit into the game, but since there's like 30 devs working in crunch on each new Volume of content there's 0 time for bug fixes.

“People need to get use to not owning games” Then people proceed to not buy your games & now you’re confused & lunching an investigation into why your profits are dropping. Let’s start with how tone deaf you are towards gamers period. You launched a subscription service when the economy is down and the last thing I would do is to subscribe to another subscription service when groceries are twice as high on top of the cost of living that is ridiculous right now. I would rather buy a disc version of a game on discount then to support your subscription service or your attitude towards us gamers not owning games. On top of you goal to make “solid” games💀….

I think games are getting worse. I don’t enjoy gaming anywhere near as much as I used to. Games I used to love are now terrible, due to greedy developers, extortionate prices and down right poor value for money. We as a community expect a WORKING game on launch. We shouldn’t have to pay 70 quid for a game that won’t be working properly until later on. It’s disgusting.

You know...I haven't been a huge fan of Ubisoft...just a few days ago my friend who loves avatar saw that they game had gone on sale for half off and got it for us both. I didn't expect much with all the news that has been...and how quiet they went on the game. To clarify I play on PC with a 3080 graphics card and the game moves really really well....Yes is it repetitive, yes you can see a lot of "time wasting" quests but so far the story has been ok(not mind blowing but not bad) combat is ok, and the world looks beautiful. I am glad we got it to give it a try is it a top 10 game of the year game...no...was it worth the price we paid for it...yeah I think we will get our monies worth. I agree you can see the potential....its like right at the edge of a cliff wanting to bungee jump but chickens out in the end....if those in charge would let their teams take the leap....I think they could rival some other big names out there in the way of world creation and story telling.

Okay I know everyone has banged on about it in the comments already but....of course we expect the products we buy to work the day we buy them. If the product doesn't work you shouldn't be selling it. If this was any product but a game, this would be so self evident that any product maker would feel utterly moronic for saying it was entitled for a purchaser to expect the thing they bought to work the day they buy it. But this is gaming and here we are. "You self entitled turds, you expect the things you buy to work the day you buy them? How DARE you expect that. How. Dare. You." - this sentiment should be from like bizarro world, not real life. I'd rather wait a few extra months and have something come out in a state that is good than have it pushed out the door to meet some arbitrary deadline. Better to make a good first impression than have to do a CP 2077 or NMS. Most games released borked DONT have a redemption arc.
