I think the real issue here, is that Ubisoft and EA and all the nonsense over the last...hell of a long time actually, has actually entirely priced some people out of the computer games space. Here's what I mean. Let's say you're on the poorer side, but you've been an avid gamer since you were barely past toddler hood. Every generation of gaming, you've had an equation to run, in order to figure out whether you can justify the cost of upgrading to the current machine standard, whether its a PC, Xbox, Playstation or Nintendo device. If you are anything like me, you've had to do the following dance in your head. "Do I think, based on industry trends, that I can purchase this device, which is a HUGE outlay for me, and be relatively sure that a high enough percentage of games that come out for it are going to be a) in genres I care about, b) of high quality and c) not laden with business practices I detest." I got out YEARS ago, the actual value of owning a gaming device now is SO much lower, because the percentage of high profile games coming out, that are SHIT in some way, is SO high. For it to be worth getting into the current gaming space, EVERY game would have to be on Baldur's Gate 3's level, and it just isn't like that. It's a bad investment, the value isn't there.

Most people(kids, since adults were a smaller part of the gaming market back then)rarely actually completed a lot of games back then, as they were designed with artificial difficulty, and even would cheat, to prevent you from realizing your game was 30 minutes long, and stop you from renting it and beating the game without paying for it. Combine that with a lot of console developers starting out in arcades, which thrived off artificial difficulty and being cheap, so it could consume your allowance, and you get old people with rose tinted glasses, pretending their generation was special.

I learned about Missingno on the playground. The Missingno cheat was spread without the internet. Every single kid would tell another kid about the Missingno cheat. This is why you have tales of Mew under the truck, Sonic in Brawl, and other things. Why? Because the Missingno cheat was real, so those may have been too. We didn't have widespread internet to check. Google literally wasn't around.

I just checked (1 day after vid release) and SWTOR has a 24 hour peak of 5,823 players ON STEAM keeping in mind many, many players likely still use a standalone launcher or through EA; considering the game released in 2011, that pretty much tells me the entire story. For anyone who's gonna ask, the peak player count ON STEAM was 34,210 and it released on steam in 2020. Addendum edit: Jedi Survivor currently has 3.2k online and peaked at just under 68k. The Empire at War Gold Pack currently has 2.6k online and peaked at 5.7k. It released in 2010. The Classic Battlefront II peaked at 4.8k 11 years ago. Released in 2009.

these player numbers are just brutal. I'm an indie player, mostly pixel graphics. Currently replaying of my favorite roguelikes, Moonlighter. It has peaked 6229 players. Another favorite, Streets of Rogue, has peaked 4320. I believe both of them combined did cost less money to make than just 1 production day in Ubisoft. This feels like the reverse of when Larian shared their statistics on BG3 anniversary. There was an ending for one of the characters that only 34 players (yes, you read that right, THIRTY FOUR) actually picked. Out of the millions of players, multiple runs, countless hours, only 34 people picked that ending. But that ending has a whole cutscene, dialogue and all that stuff and Larian took the time to make that ending knowing full well that only a super small % of players would pick it (it's probably the worst ending for that character and it's super obvious) because it makes sense in-universe to choose that ending for role-play reasons I guess. This is the inverse of that. Ubisoft made a bunch of side content for their game and no one wants to interact with it, lol

Unity was the first major crisis with the bugs and rushed development. Far Cry 3 was awesome too, and far cry 4 was pretty solid. So i think after that was just downhill...

They won't go bankrupt as much as everyone wishes it realistically, they'll likely get bought out by someone like Tencent who will attempt a revival via an assassins creed game that doesn't suck. Maybe the Chinese and Japanese will uncharacteristically join hands over this and create an authentic game? It could happen but they'd have to have the balls to do a massive restructuring of the company and eradicate the SJW infestation. Then again, it's entirely possible as well that the brand is just so contaminated now even Tencent won't want anything to do with it. The path out of this mess for Ubisoft I could see is their staff being eliminated and then they contract a Japanese studio perhaps to take over the assassins creed game while they look for replacement devs.

I think it would take at least 5-10 years of good game releases to get back on track at this point. I used to be a big Ubisoft fan because they released games like Splinter Cell, Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon, even Silent Hunter. But after making progressively worse Splinter Cell games and forgetting about it, making Silent Hunter V a mess (and forgetting about it), forgetting about Ghost Recon, making progressively worse ANNUAL AC releases after Black Flag and other slop following the same formula, they've just deteriorated to pretty much garbage tier. Only games worth still are Anno series, For Honor was fun, Siege I guess is popular but I couldn't get into it and it looks to be worsening. Anything else continues to suck. They gotta stop making so many games and actually focus for once

I think I blocked Ubisoft as a publisher on Steam after that comment about being comfortable with not owning my game. Same happened to who ever made Pharaoh Total War. Never had the problem - even missed the entire controversy by a year or so, because I had blocked the developers after some weird statement some production boss made about the customers/buyers. Instant loss of trust. Now Microsoft wants us to get comfortable with not owning our PCs and having Win 11 grabbing screenshots of what we do on our/not our PCs. Things will get funky in September, when some healthcare applications will only work on Win 11 but Win 11 will be effectively disallowed for doctors and healthcare workers in Germany.

Gunslinger smuggler game would be awesome. But they would need the main character to be morally grey and we can't have that anymore. If it was more like red dead 2 and you could actively hold up people and steal from them or board their ships and loot them... that would be awesome. Think about this.
