People of KZbin! I had a problem where I couldn't see the Apache page when I typed in the IP address into the browser! I had the Networking Adapter Type set to NAT in the VirtualBox settings. Change it to the Bridge adapter if it isn't working and restart. Before I was getting a IP address of 10.0.2.... but now it is normal and working! Thought I would share this with you so you too wouldn't have to go through hours of misery to get it to work!

if your ip is 10.0.2... then it means your network adapter is on NAT, change it to Bridged Adapter :- Settings - Network - Bridged Adapter(DropDown). Hope this helps

John, thanks for this tutorial, a good reminder having already installed Ubuntu, Lamp & CMS about 2 years ago, I encountered two things though. First, errors because of inability to rewrite "ramfs"-something. This was solved by the command "apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade " immediately after the installation of Ubuntu (I installed Ubuntu ssh and then lamp-server) Second:: The activation of the ProFTPDserver module in webmin, was only visible after logging out and in in webmin.

Also one quick thing, if you are planning to make your FTP server public, you really dont want to put a welcome banner and much less use regular FTP, make it SFTP help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/ftp-server.html When i had my own FTP server i was attacked by a brute force, the intruder never got in but just to be safe, use SFTP _and_ change the operating port of the server as well. NOTE: Always set an acl of what users can log into the FTP, i always disable root simply because thats the most obvious one to use in a brute force, use complicated usernames and passwords.

Good tutorial but is only for home territory. If you want to make a real server connected to the internet, you need to patch more security and not install things like webmin or phpMA or maybe FTP, hackers may use some exploits of these software to hack in to your server.

Hi John, Thanks for the video! I learn a lot from it. Just want to ask you... I tried practicing install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS server on an Oracle Virtual Machine... I have done all the necessary install from webmin, phpmyadmin and even Filezilla can access the server. My question is that everytime I do something to the server OS when access the server the server's ip address keeps on changing incrementally. Example, from the beginning when I typed ifconfig the ip address was 192.168.0.50. Then after I did something I cannot access 192.168.0.50 but when you increment it to 192.168.0.51 I can access my server. This continued on after I made some other installation involving the server OS. Until I completed installing Filezilla on my host machine, the ip address changed to 192.168.0.61. I am just curious how come this happens. Is there anything I can do to correct this continuous changing of the ip address. Thank you in advance man! Erwin

Nice tutorial! I've just come to the strange world of Linux from Windows after accepting how it makes for a much faster web server. I'm still a bit of a command line phobic which is why I've only tried Ubunto Desktop so far but then I had to learn commands anyway. My question is, will I get a significantly better performance installing Ubuntu Server over Ubuntu Desktop?
@Kentos12312 жыл бұрын
You can use the LAMP set up as a home network webserver, your router will not have the forwarding of Port 80 to your home servers IP, so the WAN will not direct outside traffic to it. You can use the IP on the network to navigate to your server ( 192.168.#.# ). There may be better options depending on what you plan to do though.
