I've been trying for DAYS to get a remote desktop connection to a Debian VM running under Proxmox on my home server, and failing miserably. Right up until I watched this video. It worked perfectly! Thank you for this helpful and informative demonstration!

Thank you very much. What i not understand is that before you choosed lightdm the current display manager was gdm3 (the GNOME default display manager) and after you changed it to lightdm and after the reboot nothing changed. What happens here? Why lightdm and what happens if we let it to gdm3? could x11vnc not handle it?

This is a headless server and now I lost everything after reboot. No SSH, no Teamviewer, and to top it off, still no VNC. I have to plug a display in now to figure out what's happening

Had to Enter recovery mode, sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 select gdm3 run sudo ufw disable and finally sudo reboot

Is there a way to change the port when x11vnc boots? I tried sudo x11vnc -rfbport but this only works while I'm connected via vnc and stops working the second I disconnect. I also tried setting up -rfbport in the .service file, but this broke vnc all together for some reason. Maybe I misplaced it? I put it in the line with "ExecStart=/usr/bin/x11vnc -forever -display :0 -auth guess -passwd my-password -rfbport Maybe you can help me. Thank you for the video!

For the love of god dude, do not tell people to enable ufw. If it's not already enabled on their systems, you're opening a pandora's box
