The Color Purple (1982) Alice Walker • Walker’s novel ‘The Color Purple’, is written in an epistolary form; in a series of letters. In this it continues the tradition of Samuel Richardson’s ‘Clarissa Harlowe’(1748) and William H. Brown’s ‘Power of Sympathy(1789). • Walker made history as the first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature as well as the National Book Award in 1983 for her novel “The Color Purple”. • The novel is it attack on Black men and the abuse of Black women by them. • The novels covers more than thirty years between the two world wars. • There are 94 letters in total. These letters are from Celie to God; from Nettie to Celie; and from Celie to Nettie. In a sense the novel is postmodern in its use of many genres such as autobiography, slave narrative, oral tradition all of which are incorporate into the letter form. • The Color Purple Characters:- The main characters in The Color Purple are Celie, Nettie, Albert, and Shug Avery. • Celie is the novel’s protagonist, who begins the narrative by writing letters to God as a young girl abused by her stepfather. • Nettie is Celie’s younger sister, who goes to live in Africa with a missionary couple and writes letters to Celie. • Albert is Celie’s much older, abusive husband, known for much of the novel simply as Mr.--. • Shug Avery is a blues singer who is Albert’s mistress and becomes Celie’s lover. • • Short Summary:- ‘The Color Purple’ deals with the story of Celie, a fourteen year old Black girl who has been raped by a man she considers to be her father. His name is Alfonso but she calls him Pa. Later in the novel she comes to know that he is her step and not her biological father. She has had two children through this man. Both the children are given away by him. Celie and her younger sister, 12-year-old Nettie, learn that a man identified only as "Mister" wants to marry Nettie. Alphonso refuses to let Nettie marry, instead arranging for Mister to marry Celie. Mister, a widower, needing someone to care for his own two children and keep his own house clean, eventually accepts the offer. Mister physically, sexually, and verbally abuses Celie, and his two children mistreat her as well. • Main message of The Color Purple:- ‘The Color Purple’ movingly depicts the growing up and self-realization of Celie, who overcomes oppression and abuse to find fulfillment and independence. • “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker has been banned in schools all over the country since 1984, due to its graphic sexual content and situations of violence and abuse. While “The Color Purple” contains a lot of controversial content, it's necessary to the story and is what makes the book so real and unique. • The novel was adapted into a film of the same name in 1985. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Whoopi Goldberg as Celie, Danny Glover as Albert, and Oprah Winfrey as Sofia.

Author's Introduction:- "The Color Purple'', written in 1981-1982 and published in 1982, is a epistolary novel by American author Alice Walker which won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. It was written in 1st person narrative technique. It was later adapted into a film of the same name in 1985. The setting of the novel is Georgia, Africa. The novel has been the frequent target of censors and appears on the 'American Library Association' list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2000-2010 at number seventeen. In 2003, the book was listed on the BBC's 'The Big Read' poll of the UK's "best-loved novels". "The Color Purple" was praised for its eloquent use of Black English Vernacular. In her preface to the Tenth Anniversary Edition of The Color Purple, Walker explains: “This book is the book in which I was able to express a new spiritual awareness, a rebirth into strong feelings of Oneness I realized I had experienced and taken for granted as a child; a chance for me as well as the main character, Celie, to encounter that is beyond understanding but not beyond loving and to say: I see and hear you clearly, Great Mystery, now that I expect to see and hear you everywhere I am, which is the right place.” Other notable authors who have written in this tradition include Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, and Maya Angelou. Summary:- The Color Purple documents the sufferings of Celie, an African American teenager raised in rural isolation in Georgia. She narrates her life through painfully honest letters to God. These are prompted when her abusive father, Alphonso, warns her not to tell anybody but God after he rapes her and she becomes pregnant for a second time at the age of 14. After she gives birth, Alphonso takes the child away, as he did with her first baby, leaving Celie to believe that both have been killed. When the widower Mister, also called Albert, proposes marriage to Celie’s younger sister, Nettie, Alphonso pushes him to take Celie instead, forcing her into an abusive marriage. Soon thereafter Nettie flees Alphonso and Celie. However, Albert’s interest in Nettie continued. Later in the novel, Sofia, became pregnant, after marrying Albert’s son Harpo. Unable to control her in the fight, Harpo seeks advice, and Celie suggests Harpo to beat Sofia. However, when Harpo strikes her, Sofia fights back. Later in the novel, Celie accepted her mistake and befriended Sofia. However, Celie’s relationship with Shug, an independent singer who is also Albert’s sometime mistress, developed. Two women grow close, eventually becoming lovers. During this time Celie discovers that Albert has been hiding letters that Nettie has sent her. Celie begins reading them and learns that Nettie has befriended a minister, Samuel, and his wife, Corrine, and that the couple’s adopted children, Adam and Olivia, are actually Celie’s. Nettie joins the family on a mission in Liberia, where Corrine later dies. The letters also reveal that Alphonso is actually Celie and Nettie’s stepfather and that her biological father was lynched. Questioning her faith, Celie begins addressing her letters to Nettie. However, Shug later encourages Celie to change her beliefs about God. An emboldened Celie then decides to leave Albert and go to Memphis with Shug. Once there, Celie comes into her own and creates a successful business selling tailored pants. Her happiness, however, is tempered somewhat by Shug’s affairs, though Celie continues to love her. During this time she develops a friendship with Albert, who is apologetic about his earlier treatment of her. After some 30 years apart, Celie is then reunited with Nettie, who has married Samuel. Celie also meets her long-lost children. "The Color Purple" Character List :- Celie The novel consists of Celie’s diary entries, which begin when she is fourteen years old and end when she is forty-four. She starts to write after she is raped by her father, who tells her that the only person she is allowed to tell is God. Years later, when she receives her first letter from sister Nettie, she starts writing letters to Nettie. By the end of the novel, thirty years after her first entry, Celie has modified her address from "Dear God" to "Dear God. Dear stars, dear trees, dear sky, dear peoples. Dear Everything. Dear God." Initally a very timid, vulnerable young girl, she is not only raped by her father but also, later, beaten by her husband. But Celie gains confidence and succeeds through the opportunities she takes advantage of, and she learns to love and be loved. Nettie Nettie is Celie’s younger sister. Nettie is intelligent, resilient, and completely loyal to Celie. As a young girl, she escapes a lot of the difficulties almost like Celie. Nettie takes full advantage of her education and works very hard. She shares her wealth of knowledge with Celie when they are together. Nettie is grateful for meeting Samuel and his family, who treat her as part of their family and take her to Africa with them. She spends most of her life caring for Samuel’s adopted children, who are really Celie’s children, and brings them home safely to Celie after thirty years of separation. Nettie’s letters are among the diary entries in the novel so that we have access to Nettie’s experiences and thoughts in the same way that we experience Celie’s. Alfonso (Pa) The man whom Celie and Nettie call Pa. He rapes Celie when she is fourteen years old because his wife, who is ill, will not sleep with him. He instigates Celie's letter-writing by telling Celie that she must be silent about the rape . He is a controlling, selfish, and weak man without a conscience. He pushes the marriage between Celie and Mister by refusing to allow Nettie to marry him. At the end of the novel, Nettie finds out that Pa is not actually their father. Their real father was killed by a white businessman who felt threatened by their father's entrepreneurial success. Alfonso married their mother after their father died. He dies at the end of the novel. Corrine Happily married to Samuel, the only thing missing in her life is children. When she and her husband, Samuel, adopts Adam and Olivia, Celie’s children. She dies content that Nettie is not their mother--but has spent many anxious years thinking that Nettie was. Samuel Samuel is dedicated to his missionary duties and hard work. Gentle and sensitive, he takes Nettie into his home thinking she has come in search of Adam and Olivia. Happy in his first marriage but hurt by Corrine’s accusations, he marries Nettie after years of friendship once Corrine dies. Olivia and Adam Olivia and Adam are the children of Celie and Pa. Olivia is an Intelligent and independent. She does not find love during the course of the novel. Adam, a passionate young boy who loves Tashi but finds the culture she comes from difficult to accept. Shug Avery Our first impression of Shug is negative. She has some sort of “nasty woman disease", and is spurned by her own parents. When Celie looks at Shug’s photograph, not only does Shug’s glamorous appearance amaze her, but Shug reminds Celie of her mother. Shug is actually warm and compassionate at heart. Shug remains Celie’s most constant friend and companion throughout the novel. Mr.___ Although Mr.___’s development is not the subject of the novel. Mr.___ initially treats Celie as no more than an object. He beats her like an animal and shows no human connection, even during sex. He also hides Nettie’s letters from Celie for years. At the end of the novel, Mr.___ finally listens to Celie, and Mr.___ eventually expresses his wish to have an equal and mutually respectful marriage with Celie, but she declines.

The Colour Purple ⭐️Introduction The Color Purple, novel by Alice Walker, published in 1982. It won a Pulitzer Prize in 1983. A feminist work about an abused and uneducated African American woman’s struggle for empowerment, The Color Purple was praised for the depth of its female characters and for its eloquent use of Black English Vernacular. ⭐️Summary of the novel At fourteen, Celie begins writing to God about her life after Alphonso, the man she believes to be her father, threatens her if she tells anyone that he is raping her. Celie has two children with Alphonso, and he takes each child away after birth. Celie’s only love is Nettie, her clever little sister. Celie eventually marries an older man, Albert, after her father declines to let the man marry Nettie. As a twenty-year-old mother to Albert’s many children from previous relationships, Celie is as downtrodden as ever. Albert beats her, verbally abuses her, and is infatuated with the blues singer Shug Avery, a woman he has loved his entire life but cannot marry. Albert’s eldest son, Harpo, treats her with just as much disrespect as his father. Nettie comes to stay with Celie when Alphonso turns his attention to her, but Albert throws her out when she rejects his advances as well. When Nettie leaves, she promises to write, but Celie never receives any letters. Nettie goes to stay in town with Samuel, a minister, and Corrine, Samuel’s wife, on the advice of Celie, who met the couple in town one day and believes they have adopted her two children, now named Olivia and Adam. Nettie follows the family to Africa as a missionary among the Olinka tribe. Celie’s household is thrown into upheaval when Albert brings an ailing Shug home for Celie to nurse to health. Celie manages to heal Shug with good food and leisure, and the two women strike up an unlikely friendship that puzzles and scandalizes their family and acquaintances. Several years later, Harpo marries a bold young woman named Sofia. Their marriage ends when Harpo tries to abuse Sofia, and Harpo reinvents himself as a juke joint owner and partner to another woman, Mary Agnes (called “Squeak”). When the white mayor and his wife suggest Sofia work for them as their maid, Sofia curses at them and slaps the mayor. She is imprisoned and, in a tragic turn, does later become their domestic worker. Celie stands by as Shug heals and resumes her affair with Albert. Celie learns to love Shug, who teaches Celie about her own pleasure and uncovers that Albert has been intercepting and hiding letters from Nettie for years. Celie reads years and years of letters from her sister. In her letters, Nettie recounts how the village of the Olinka was destroyed when an English rubber company took over the land. Corrine becomes ill and-suspecting that Samuel and Nettie are having an affair-rejects the children because she assumes Nettie is their mother. Corrine finally dies knowing the truth. Samuel and Nettie marry, and their mission among the Olinka winds down as the Olinka die out. Adam marries an Olinka girl, and the family head back to America. Celie’s life changes dramatically over the years as well. She lives with Shug in Memphis for a time after Albert’s betrayal in hiding the letters becomes too much to bear. She starts her own company and becomes Shug’s lover and companion. Shug goes on the road again and is not home so much, but Celie thrives as she asserts control over her life. She returns to Georgia for visits and watches as Albert mellows out and becomes something like a friend to her. Celie discovers in one of the letters from Nettie that Alphonso is not actually her biological father. Nettie discovers the truth from Samuel, who tells the story of how he came to have the children. When Alphonso dies, Celie and Nettie inherit a store, a fine house, and land. Celie experiences heartbreak, however, when Shug leaves Celie for a younger man. Celie also receives word that the ship carrying Nettie and the children sank after hitting a German land mine. This news turns out to be false, however, since Celie still receives letters from her sister. Shug eventually turns up, ready to take up life with Celie again. Nettie, Olivia, and Adam at last make it to Georgia. The family reunites, and Celie is content. ⭐️Theme The main theme of The Color Purple is Gender. The novel exposes gender subjugation and preaches gender solidarity among women. It also tries to break certain gender stereotypes about masculinity and femininity. Walker’s best-known work, The Color Purple received widespread critical acclaim, though it was not without critics, many of whom objected to its explicit language and sexual content. To this day, we think of purple as the color of royalty and luxury. Consequently, it brings up a feeling of trust and reliability. Purple's rarity also gives it an air of mystery. It's associated with creativity and the realm of fantasy - think about how many times magic gets portrayed as purple in popular culture. Characters - Celie.
