I'm very new to judo and I was wondering if you could change the lapel grip to a back grip when you go hip to hip or does that turn it into a different throw? Love your videos btw ❤️
@EfficientJudo2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Using a back grip is a good way for beginners to practice techniques like this because it provides better upper body connection, which helps you balance a bit better. The reality is that you'll mainly fight from lapel grips unless you're in a right vs left or left vs right scenario, so you need to be able to use the lapel grip for your techniques. The same is true for practicing harai-goshi and hane-goshi where you need to balance on one leg.

Wait, i think this is HANE GOSHI, what a difference?
@EfficientJudo5 жыл бұрын
Hane-goshi is hip technique while uchi-mata is a leg technique. The main action in uchi-mata comes from the tori lifting uke via leg to inner thigh connection. Hane-goshi the lift comes from the hip, while tori's leg in Hane-goshi can look like it does he lifting, it's secondary to the hip.
@jehoover30094 жыл бұрын
Efficient Judo . Yes I agree with your description. It doesn’t concur with the words in the video that say “...it comes manly from the hips.” And the leg is mainly to guide the throw. What Is presented is like a Ukigoshi (floating hip, see Kano demos) with the sweeping leg entering between. Good technique though what ever it truly is 😉. No offence intended.

@EfficientJudo4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the leg does sweep in the middle - if you are going for this style of uchi-mata, then you need to have some hip contact and lift, otherwise you'll be trying to lift your opponent by that groin with your hamstring. Otherwise you need to attack from further outside of the opponent with a more leg centric uchi-mata, like the spinning uchi-mata demo.

What the different between uchi mata and harai goshi? Is it just where the right leg(or sweeping leg) placement? Harai goshi placed right leg on opponent right side and uchi mata placed right leg on opponent's center.
@EfficientJudo4 жыл бұрын
Harai-goshi is koshi-waza (hip technique), Uchi-mata is ashi-waza (foot technique). Harai requires hip action, and while we show a hip version of uchi-mata, its not strictly speaking necessary to get that level of hip contact (look at some of our demos for variations of uchi-mata with much less hip). The leg action of tori is in between the legs for uchi-mata, while harai-goshi its outside of the legs.
@tavtav35264 жыл бұрын
@@EfficientJudo ah I got it now. While uchi mata is like trippling your opponent using your leg and momentum, harai goshi use your hip to lever your opponent. Thank you for your explanation.

@EfficientJudo2 жыл бұрын
Yes it a very valid point, in fact if you look at the kodokan classification, uchi-mata is ashi-waza. But I feel for most beginners, they have a much easier time learning the throw with hip connection. We have a number of different demo videos with more leg based variations of uchi-mata.

@@jimjimjim000-.- if you can't balance on one leg while throwing uke, then you need to work on your balance. I suggest practicing Harai-goshi with an O-goshi style grip (under the armpit around the back) - do this until you are able to lift and balance on one leg.
@marcelodiaz50064 жыл бұрын
a question about this: when you put the leg inside of the uke´s balance, is just that movement or i should pull his sleeve down?
@EfficientJudo4 жыл бұрын
All throws require the whole body to work in unison. You need to continue using the hands to guide the opponent through the throw even when you get the lift with the leg - the hands form an important part of finishing the throw and making sure the opponent lands on their back.

Sensei, how do you prevent posting by the hand in instances where you can’t establish a sleeve grip on the far side?
@EfficientJudo4 жыл бұрын
I assume you talking about a right vs left scenario? It's the reason you want to control that far sixe sleeve, as that's the grip that allows you to rotate uke effectively. Failing having that grip, you're relying on whatever grip to do have for rotation, but as you may have discovered, it difficult. While I wouldn't normally recommend changing a grip mid throw, you may be able to wrap up their arm as they try to post.
@wsl31194 жыл бұрын
@@EfficientJudo Thank you for the breakdown Sensei, I’ve always had trouble understanding this throw, now I know the leg is just used as a guide and not complete leverage. This type of Uchi-mata (hip uchi-mata) is best suited against taller opponents. Make sure you break the balance well, so that uke is already leaning forwards. The sweeping leg can even connect with the other thigh, like in Hane-goshi.
@mirkoparagano17446 жыл бұрын
Efficient Judo So this version is more a hip throw than a ashi waza? Much people call uchimata a tall guys technique Thanks for all
@uiklotw8826 жыл бұрын
Mirko Paragano as I know, the type of uchi mata you are saying is “Ken-Ken uchi mata ” for the right side,Ken-Ken uchi mata will be sweeping your opponent's left leg and less hip contact,the higher you can sweep your opponent's leg,the more you can get the ippon,so this technique is more suitable for tall judoka. and the hip uchi mata,which is similar to hane-goshi, will be sweeping your opponent's right leg and hip contact.

Why is uchi mata called a leg technique? I have never primarily used my legs to throw anyone with uchi mata. I've always used primarily my hip to pivot the person about my hip and then sweep the person with my legs. Honestly, I have no idea on how you actually expect to get someone to completely leave both feet off the ground with just your legs. If I don't use my hips, then I'll end up doing a ten ten uchi mata(uchi mata where you're hopping, doing circles),
@EfficientJudo3 жыл бұрын
Uchi-Mata is a leg technique - that is its kodokan classification. I agree with you that the hip variation is probably the most used and useful, and we show hip contact in the video. But its possible to perform uchi-mata as a pure leg action without needing to hop (being taller than uke helps with this, but isnt needed). A simple example of this as a leg action would be as a counter to a kosoto. Also watch some the top level Japanese fighters and you'll see very leg based Uchi-matas - Joshiro Maruyama being an example.
