In fact, the jailing and "disappearance" of political opponents was widely publicised, and Carmichael was a leading apologist, repeating with admiration Touré's sickening justification: "In revolution there is no sentimentality" (similar to what other totalitarian mass murderers - Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot - were fond of saying. Not only that. Carmichael was an apologist/supporter of Castro, Mao, Nkrumah, Nasser - any murderous dictator who used "revolutionary" or "anti-colonialist" language. I agree with you that he was an idiot, which is essentially what you are saying, but we disagree about what kind of idiot he was. I say he was a dishonest idiot.

@@musicmanmaui That's a good question. The central issues, I think, are democracy, basic rights (civil and human), and decentralisation of power. Socialism means many things to many people. Lenin and his followers turned it into the idea that a single party seizes power and nationalises all industry and capital, and then governs on behalf of the working masses. Whenever this idea has been put into practice, it has led to horrific human rights abuses and oppressive dictatorship. The reasons are predictable from liberal theory. As Lord Acton famously said: "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely". If you centralise power in one party and one person, oppression is sure to follow. But socialism can mean other things. It can mean a multi-party democracy with all the basic rights of a liberal society, but a large involvement of the government in the economy through ownership and regulation. Or it could mean a democracy where workers of each company own their company and operate it as a cooperative. Or it could be some combination of these. Power is not centralised, and the "checks and balances" that are important to liberal democracy could be institutionalised in these socialist societies. But there are many other questions. But socialist critics say that so-called free enterprise legitimises economic dictatorship both within each company (the boss tells you what to do) and within society (as economic power tends to be concentrated and has an enormous influence over the political sphere). These are complicated questions, but what is certain is that Leninist "revolution" has always failed to bring about a decent free society.

They said the same thing about slavery. Many slaves didn't see an end in sight and so succumbed to it. But there were a few (like Stokely) that stayed in the struggle and had a vision. The Roman Empire is supposedly the greatest empire to exist but even it met it's end. Nothing lasts, especially something like capitalism that's predicated on exploiting the have-nots.

I have no doubt that the socialist economic model is more humane for all, but just look at the worlds nations, every time a leader nationalizes the major industries and tries to implement socialist values he gets killed like a dog. @@By-Ardel Your sentence construction was fine. You have legitimate concerns, if history is anything to go by. I don't think we can completely eradicate all the negatives (exploitation) but minimising them would be a step in the right direction, I'm guessing that's what a socialist government would offer? As for leaders getting eliminated before implementing their values - I feel hopeful in regards that most oppressed groups are altering their approach to politics, they realise placing all your hopes in one political figure is a recipe for disaster and as can be seen in history, when said leaders get eliminated has often led to the respective movement grinding to a halt. Such events have led to the average Joe becoming more politically inclined. I get the feeling we are moving into an era of ideological revolution.

@@quietatse I sincerely hope you are right when it comes to the ideological revolution. And when it comes to minimizing exploitation i don't believe we have to necessarily switch to so socialism, it can be done with appropriate taxation, within the capitalist system. But the problem in basically every western country is that the lobbyist groups, have gotten their way. By which i mean 'not paying taxes'. Or using the different countries and their systems in a way that they minimize their tax offerings. For instance the dutch oil company 'shell', doesnt pay taxes in the Netherlands while in its name its a royal company. The same goes for the dutch royals, while both usurp taxes. And the companies get major bailouts in times of need, just like the US banks did in 2008. As for oppressed groups altering their approach to politics, i guess i can understand your point when i look at the BLM movement. But what i find troubling with that whole movement is the 'lack' of a clear stance or solution. When i comes to the institutionalized racism witch leeds to such events as police brutally, or the enslavement by the jurisdictional system and the privatization of the prison system. If not for political leaders, who else will pave the way for real reforms or radical changes. I honestly believe some of us need to 'sacrifice' ourselves for the common good. By sacrifice i mean in the way Malcolm, Dr.King and Hampton did. For instance the panthers used to 'deal' with the drug dealers in their respected neighborhoods, until Nxon and the CIA/FBI dismantled them and introduced the crack and heroin epidemics. What you say about movements coming to a halt is unfortunately true, but that usually due to the diffidence created within the 'leftovers'/ the remainder of a organization (the ones that didn't get killed) by the FBI. When i study the last revolutionary era of the pro black movement, i come to the conclusion that even dough they did get killed, they made major progress for the generation to come. I still feel that the average Joe still needs political guidance when i comes to politics, especially by political leaders. Who strive for economic equality first and foremost.
