I have a lot of respect for Maldini and defenders of his caliber, but they are not the greatest of all time (GOAT). I'm not trying to boast, but a kid from Rosario became the greatest player in the history of football, Lionel Andres Messi. I believe that during Messi's prime, when he won 3-4 Ballon d'Ors back to back, he could stand up against any defender you put him against. I have never seen anyone dribble past players like he did for consecutive years. While there are many greats and legends like Zidane and Maldini, there is only one Messi, and we are incredibly lucky to have watched him play. If you doubt what I'm saying, just watch Zidane's interview about Messi. Zidane himself said that there is only one player like Messi. Respect!

The same people in 80s talk about Maradona, and people in the 90s and in the early 2000s talk about Ronaldo Nazario, Ronaldinho, Zidane, and Kaka'. Pep Guardiola once bringed Roberto Baggio meeting Messi in a Barca match. You know what was the words that Guardiola said to Messi? Maldini and Baresi are probably my two favourite defenders of all time. There are two statistics in football history that will always be mindblowing to me. Messi's 92 goals in one calender year and the fact that Baresi and Maldini played 196 games together as a central defense pair (Maldini played most of his games in his career at left back, which aren't counted in this stat) for AC Milan and in those games only conceded 23 goals.

I think Maldini is the GOAT of defenders, but the stats above is misleading. They actually played 297 games and conceded 221 goals. 23 goals was probably the average goals conceded per season they were together - which is still very impressive.

I've never seen a better tackler than Maldini. Every time he tackled someone he never fouled them - such clean and effective tackles with very few yellow cards and I'm sure never a red. Add that to his brilliant positioning, pace, technique on the ball, great overlapping attacks and supreme sportmanship and you have an absolute legend and icon of the game.

Most of them entered hard, hit you with the ball and without the ball, cursed you, they were very tough. All over the world defenders at that time played tough. The proof is also the stories (many) of former players who said how tough the Italian defenders were at that time. For example, Adrian Mutu said that Fernando Couto and Mihailovic hit him and cursed him the whole match. Elbows in the mouth, etc. I wanted to highlight that Maldini enters the ball cleanly. First time I am hearing Maldini speaking English. A great defender with a great charisma. That period late eighties and beginning nineties, AC Milan (Rijkaard, van Basten, Gullit, Maldini, Baresi) , Barcelona the Dream Team , Inter Milan and off course Ajax. Very good players...loved it.
