I have the mini and love it. I buy Ohr tealite candles on Amazon and they burn a minimum of 4 hrs. I get 50 candles for $9. That makes the candles $0.18 each. At a 4 hour burn time, that's 4.5 cents per hour to operate. They do make a cocoon case for the Candelier. It's about $14 on Amazon. The way the cost to operate bakes out on the 4 different models is this (assuming my Ohr candles are used in the Mini/Micro): Micro: carries 2 candles. 8 hours of light. $0.18 per candle @ 4 hrs burn time = 4.5 cents/hour. Mini: carries 6 candles. 24 hours of light. $0.18 per candle @ 4 hrs burn time = 4.5 cents/hour. Original (standard): Carries 1 candle. 9 hours of light. $1.66 per candle @ 9 hrs burn time = 18.4 cents/hour. Whether purchased in a 3-pack ($4.99) or 9-pack ($14.99), the cost per candle is the same on Amazon. Original (standard): Carries 1 candle. 9 hours of light. $0.75 per candle @ 9 hrs burn time = 8.3 cents/hour. Cost per candle drops to $0.75/ea when you purchase the 20-pack ($26.67 on Amazon). Original (beeswax): Carries 1 candle. 13 hours of light. $4.17 per candle @ 13 hrs burn time = 32.1 cents/hour. 3-pack is $12.50 on Amazon. Original (beeswax): Carries 1 candle. 13 hours of light. $3.46 per candle @ 13 hrs burn time = 26.6 cents/hour 20-pack is $69.21 on Amazon. Candelier (original): carries 1 set of 3 candles. 9 hours of light. $4.99 per candle set @ 9 hrs burn time = 55.4 cents/hour. I guess I mostly did all that for my own amusement ... but it was interesting to break it out and see how the costs add up. The Micro and Mini are the most cost effective to use, at 4.5 cents/hr. You may be able to even bring that down if you can find a cheaper source for candles than mine. The beeswax candles aren't worth the cost. It sells as a longer burn time, but they are so much more expensive to buy, it ends up doubling the cost to operate from the regular candles (in the original UCO lantern). You can get pretty cheap to operate on the original UCO if you buy the candles in the 20-pack ... costing only 8.3 cents/hour to burn.

GREAT PROTECTIVE CASE for the UCO MINI CANDLE LANTERN (Tea light holder one as in video) - I use a 'Lock & Lock' 350ml round sealable food container (74mm x 110mm) - HPL931D. Robust, solid & perfect (& I mean 'perfect) size. In fact when I had the idea and tried it, it brought a ridiculously satisfying grin to my face. - MaD DESIGNS

I have the three on the left, one Micro, three Minis, and two of the Originals... and the Mini(not Micro) is my favorite by far. I burn high quality Canadian-Made tealights branded "Yummy". They are Food-Grade unscented parraffin wax, and they burn a minimum of 4hrs ea just as advertised. Menards used to sell them for only $6 per 100pk, and I bought 600 of them when they were on sale for $4/100 three years ago. Burn cost with my Mini Candle Lanterns is under 1cent per hour vs 10cents per hour with my Original Candle Lanterns. The Original is still the nicest by far, but it is expensive to burn.
@RANDOUGHSURVIVOR9 жыл бұрын
+WisconsinEric Right on. I just like the micro better because it slides down to protect the globe. The mini would be my 2nd choice more than likely. That is dirt cheap for some good candles. The actual UCO Tealight's are crazy expensive. I will have to try the Yummy brand out.

RANDOUGH SURVIVOR Sorry I miss spelled the brand of candles... It is "Yummi" brand and they sell them on their website. They now advertise a 4-5hr burn time, and I always get over 4hrs burn time with 200+ of them I have burned over the last 3-4yrs. They also burn brighter than the Chinese-Made tealights from WalMart, and they burn with far less odor too. So they cost less, burn brighter with less odor, and they burn hours longer....And they are NOT Made in Communist China. I call that stacking positives. I own the original and the mini, I prefer the mini over the micro because of the wax trap, the extra light and the 5 candle storage, as for knocking over the micro, the only time that would help is if it's closed up, off, and in a place it could be knocked over, but when in use it's globe is just as exposed as the Mini. So as long as you put your mini back in your pack or somewhere safe after use there's no issue. It also weighs less.

Just bought a mini. Great review on these. I like the dry in a wet tent and I like the light. Good stuff. I've seen these lights dissed on Backpacker mag blogs. WRONG.

Perfect, well thought out comprehensive review on these. I was thinking of a battery style lantern but came across your video and will definitely be purchasing a UCO Candle Lantern now. I was especially interested in the heat output as this may be a good choice to get some added heat inside a tent or hammock. I'll be going with your recommendation of a micro and an oil tea light. Thanks +Randough Survivor!

+Instant Backpacker Well I am glad it helped. The micro really is my got to lantern. My second choice would be the original but it can get pricey to run. Thanks for watching and I hope you love your lantern.

Very good review and comparison. I really like that you broke down the cost per use. I hadn't thought about it and it's good info. I have the micro for taking into the woods & really like it but I do have the problem making sure it doesn't collapse on itself. I just got the candlelier a little while ago (it was $25 on amazon at that time) haven't used it much yet. I bought it for home emergency use and because it could boil water - haven't tested it yet but I will.
@RANDOUGHSURVIVOR10 жыл бұрын
The Peaceful Prepper I am going to try to boil water with the Candleier as well. I like the big one but the micro is my favorite. Cost of running and the protected globe are the winning factors for me. Thanks for watching and sharing.

Have a nice thing about those UCO candles if you do it right you can make your own candle for the thing can you buy the beeswax and bulk in the wick so you can make your own save money

Great review , I think I’m gonna go for the mini , 9 hr candle and a bit more knock proof suits me, although your favourite is on my buy list for home survival
@dalevodden13593 жыл бұрын
And if you use the teacup candles save the cup and the base for the wick because you can reuse those and make your own candle out of beeswax all you need is the beeswax and the wick
@ricksorber95622 жыл бұрын
Google says that one candle puts out about 75 or 80 BTUs. How does UCO come up with 5000 for the Candleir? Is the 9 hour burn figure into it?

@RANDOUGHSURVIVOR9 жыл бұрын
+Eclectician The biggest one just gives off the most heat. The micro and mini put out the least. The orig. puts out a little more and the 3 tier acts like a small heater. Yo can even heat water on it.

I've never had a dollar store tea light give me less than 2.5-3 hrs and the white UCO 9-hr candles give me 11.5-12 hrs easy. Just saying.
@RANDOUGHSURVIVOR8 жыл бұрын
LOL .................. Just saying what is advertised on the box. It is called UCO 9 hour candles but who knows how long they will burn. I have sure never burned one from start to finish and timed it.
@Roarmeister28 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't know why they only advertise 9-hrs on them when they (UCO) would know otherwise. You would think they would get better advertising mileage by reporting the better numbers. 9-hrs in a strong breeze maybe? Other people's mileage may vary. :) P.S. I am going to buy the micro -- the wax cleaning on the standard candle takes a few minutes. On price alone the tea light burner is definitely cheaper.
@RANDOUGHSURVIVOR8 жыл бұрын
The micro is my favorite on price of operation alone. Add in the protected globe and it makes it that much better,. It is truly an awesome piece of gear.
@Roarmeister25 жыл бұрын
Note: I use both the micro and the standard. The standard gives me grief occasionally when the melted wax spills and seals the expanding spring section. I use UCO brand candles but they are a bit pricey. With the micro, I've used the regular 5/8" high tea lights and the 1" high tea lights - I can fit 2 tea lights in the micro which gives me about 10 hours total burn time. I don't think the micro is even sold anymore - perhaps it ate into sales of the original candle too much? 😁

That's a great review. I have the micro and original only, and I love them both but my biggest gripe about the micro is that if you accidentally bump it the wax from the tealight goes everywhere which is kind of a pain, but money wise your right it's way cheaper to run. The light output you get from the original though is better than the micro and the wax doesn't get all over the place as easy when bumped. The micro is 4.3oz with two full tealights and the original is 6.5oz with a full candle. I use them for backpacking and I have a hard time figuring which one I'll take. I ask myself do I want to save weight or do I want more light and usually more light wins because I wont use my headlamp as much in camp. They are both great in their own ways. Thank you for the good review. cheers
@RANDOUGHSURVIVOR9 жыл бұрын
Don P I prefer the original when backpacking or just camping. In an emergency I go with the micro. More cost effective that way. I used the Candleier a few times now but it is really expensive to use and puts of a bit of heat.
