The annual pirith ceremony of the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) was held on the eve of the 27th of January , followed by an alms giving on the succesive morning at the UCSC premises. The pirith ceremony is organized each year by the first year undergraduate students of the UCSC, to commemorate Late Professor Vidya Jyothi V.K.Samaranayake , the founding father of UCSC, also known across Sri Lanka as the 'Father of IT in Sri Lanka'. This is one of the most prestigious events of the UCSC Year Calendar which brings out the artistic skills and the creativite craftsmanship of the young and energetic students of the UCSC. The occasion was graced by the Director of UCSC, Dr. Gihan Wickramanayke and the presence of members of the academic staff as well as the non - academic staff added colour to the event.It was a most spectacular pirith ceremony that clearly left an indelible imprint on the minds of all who beheld. This magnanimous feat was achieved in less than two months' time with the combined corporation and untiring effort of all first year undergraduate students of the UCSC. Students were driven by dedication, determination, hard work, inspiration and unity which culminated in organizing this memorable pirith ceremony in the history of the UCSC .The 'pirith mandapaya ' was a replica of the Jaya Sri Maha Bo Tree where the Lord Buddha attained the supreme status of Nirvana. Decorating the surroundings were a big pandal erected at the entrance to the UCSC premises. Oil lamps and lanterns adorned the pathway leading up to an arched stoneway which extended the path up to the Pirith Mandapaya. There were beautiful drawings and carvings along the way and surrounding the Pirith Mandapaya making the place an 'icon of serenity '.Every participant was presented with a copy of 'Sovan wanu was' dhamma grantha which indeed was a dhamma dhana in its own right aimed at encouraging the devotees to follow the path towards the supreme enlightenment. The place was flooded with pious and enthusiastic devotees, all who gathered in the hope of listening to the chanting of pirith until the dawn of the following morning. The hard work and dedication of the first year undergraduates of the UCSC was well rewarded with every participant praising and appreciating the beauty of the pirith ceremony. -
