You couldn't get this type of carving with a noisy old dremel . You don't learn the way the grain reacts to you or the way the wood feels and reacts to you .or the best types of wood are good for carving. And the way those woods feel , hand carving is always the best way.

I totally agree, I tried carving with a dremel first, before whittling, and I couldn't handle the noise or the dust.😂 I am really OCD ( and asthmatic) about getting dust all over the yard or house, so I think whittling is the best fit for me.

Dear ddalo, Got time to carve again, just finished a smale giraffe, I have a few 4x6 x2 ft so I carved one 12 inches high by 4 in. by 6 in. . it's going to make a wonderful bookend for my newest grandson whom is now 2 years old. thank you so much for these animals. I'll carve a 4 in x 6 in. x 9 inch elephant for the other side book end. thanks again. . ps only bad side is the wood is a hard pine. but carvable with chisels and mallet
