Im 90% sure they made the handle bars for legality issues in Europe. Because without the Handlebar it's a Skateboard which is illegal in many Countries, but not sure it will get through since it doesn't have lights and mechanical brakes.

good review on a innovative product but i dont think this is a good option for anyone maybe small kids bacause they can start out with the scooter mode and switch to skate mode but the handle bar seems kinda high to be usefull for kids, the brake's should be better and the 650$ is a bit much for a kids board.

I agree. There are some demographics that I could see the handles being useful for, but it then becomes more expensive than it is worth to me

I'm currently in a several-year process of designing and building an esk8 from scratch. It is being designed to meet the legal mandates for the area I plan to ride, one of the laws being handlebars are required on electric skateboards on roads in zones above 25mph. I am mainly focusing on the components below the deck at the moment (enclosure, motor mounts, electronics, etc) but I was wondering about your thoughts on esk8's with handlebars. What design features would you like to see that would make an esk8 with handlebars worth riding over one without?

I personally do not think that they work that well. It is awkward and impractical. To make it as good as possible though, the deck would need to be relatively stiff. The remote would also need to plug into the handle bars to become a throttle, or the handle bars would need to have a throttle that controls acceleration.

@@DIYesk8Builders I am currently working with a Loaded Truncated Tesseract for the deck (pretty stiff, like riding a C U R V Y cutting board), a 'liberated' Boosted Rev downstem for the handlebars (with a modified handlebar that allows a VESC Wand remote to either be used as the right-hand grip, or removed for freehanded use). Do you think that instead of removable handlebars/downstem that a folding mechanism would be more beneficial? That way instead of having to store or carry it, you just fold it out of the way? Granted this is extra weight, but I legally need to have handlebars in zones above 25mph. I have ZERO e-skate experience, but I do skate so I am kinda taking this as I go. I don't doubt the clumsiness of handlebars on boards for a second but it's a design limitation I cannot avoid. I think they could add additional stability at high speeds and potentially make a different class of esk8's; a class focused on long-distance (12+ mile), high-speed (25mph+) commuting. I have a lot of cool ideas for this board already well in the works (dual APS 63100's, VESC6, Bear Kodiak Forged trucks with custom mounts, dual disk brakes (repurposed Magura MT e-stop brakes with custom ~70mm rotors), I hope for it to be used at high speeds for long distances.) Again, I have no experience with esk8's, I'm just an engineer with an idea I cannot let go.

You could try having a folding handlebar but it has to give room for the riders feet and not be something thats in the way. I think I saw a couple of patents for some folding handlebars but I am not entirely sure. But you could definitely try that idea. Also if you don't mind me asking, where do they mandate handlebars on electric skateboards?

@@DIYesk8Builders Michigan, they define an electric skateboard as "a wheeled device with a floorboard to stand on that is not more than 60 inches long and 18 inches wide and is designed for only one person at a time. To be an electric skateboard, the device must have an electrical propulsion system that does not exceed 2,500 watts and a maximum speed on a paved level surface that does not exceed 25 mph". So I am going to electronically neuter my board from 9kw to 2.5kw and govern the speed to max out at 25. That's all for legality, so I'll be allowed in zones up to 45mph and be able to cross 55mph zones and highways. But going over 25mph automatically makes the riding of that board illegal; I could see how one could say that "since you're not going over 25mph, why the handlebars?" I just need them for the speed zones.
