I'm still waiting until I get better at making music to justify a big hardware Poly Synth, but this and the 3rd Wave are the two I would most likely lean towards. Having had the pleasure to talk with the guys from UDO at Superbooth really cemented the Super Gemini as one of those dream purchases. The Keyboard feels amazing, the hands on control without a screen (which many hate) is a choice I absolutely adore and the sounds it produces are nothing short of spectacular. I giggled out loud when someone played a pad and added the Bass notes. It just sounds so god dammn smooth

Well for me it would probably be the 3rd Wave, just because I've always been a fan of the PPG sound/synths, love that gritty wavetable sound, but the 3rd Wave can also do VA/analog extremely well. But these two synths are so very different, it's not very comparable and you should listen to as much of both as you can and decide based on what you hear. Feature wise they might be somewhat comparable in strength, but definitely not sonically imo. It would be like trying to compare a PPG vs Jupiter@@2ammusik

@@devinbelangermusic Hey man! Thanks so much! I'm sure you'll enjoy it, it's a beast of a synth. I think the most important tip, and it's strongest feature is probably all the hands on control you have, with no menus to distract you etc..it's all just right there at your fingertips, so you can really get lost even when you start from a pretty basic patch. I wish I had more time with my hardware, it'd be fun to do another of these at some point and just see where the tweaking takes it. Before I recorded this one, the only practice I really did, was to just play with a whole bunch of controls so that I kind of had a rough idea of what to play with while recording. The Gemini feels like a synth playground and really lends itself to just exploring the controls, experimenting and letting patches evolve as you play around.

I watched your long video demoing the 3rd WAVE. Very lovely Synth with insane capabilities/specs. YOU certainly bring out the Beautiful in whatever instrument you touch! And then...there's GEMINI. THIS improvisation brought tears to my eyes. Meanwhile, a dozen friends ( who know of my search for a POLY ) chimed already: 'NO CONTEST...Gemini does not EVEN begin to compete with 3rd Wave!' Meanwhile, I can't get this Gemini performance out of my head. If you have a minute, I am merely hoping for a "BOX A" or "BOX B" answer., I'm waiting on a Train; a Train that will take me far away....a one way ticket. proposition. I can carry on my suitcase and am allotted what would be the space for one keyboard shaped Box. Box A is the GEMINI. Box B is the 3rd WAVE Desktop + ROLI RISE 2. I wonder which box you'd have loaded onto the train.? Thank you.

So what are your thoughts on the Super 6/8/Gemini now, relative to the other gear? I'm looking to offload a bunch of synths to get a Super 6, the smaller size seems beneficial, but... I also kind of wonder, do I really need this (with a Prophet 10, Jupiter 6, System 8, Poly Evolver, Prophet 12, Virus TI, etc). I know you've stopped by my channel a few times and commented on the videos (thanks by the way!) and just wondering whether you think it's worth it, since I think we share a lot of similar gear. Lovely sound/video by the way. Thanks for sharing.
@stateazure7 ай бұрын
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed this one. To be honest, since this video I've only made a handful of patches and still not had nearly enough time for it. These synths are supposed to share some DNA with Jupiters..well I don't know about that, and I've never owned classic synths or even played any like you have, so it's not something I can give a qualified opinion on. At least among the synths I own, it seems quite unique and fits in well and I quite dig the sound, even if the sound pallete is maybe quite limited. It's also incredibly fun to program. Not sure what else to say about it really, but I'm looking forward to taking for another spin/video hopefully soon. Hard to say if you'd really benefit from a Super 6/8 in your studio, but hopefully you can try it out and see, would be interesting to get your opinion on it if you do get one! It's definitely not a synth I 'need', but then again I'm not sure any of my hardware synths are.

@@stateazure Thanks - I was waiting for a response - and for some reason, KZbin just doesn't tell me if people respond to my comments on their channels. It's really annoying. I've been on a kick to offload a bunch of synths I haven't used and don't use, so hopefully I can try one out and let you know what I think. I only played a S6 once, so who knows. I find that - probably what makes a soundscape so interesting is more than just the synth (was just watching your Virus TI video from yesterday and that was, like this, excellent - and it just reminds me how much a lot of this is the skill and FX that are used. Hell, most of my stuff is probably not even recognizable because I put them through so much! FYI - not sure if you've tried one out, but I think you'd get a kick out of the System 8. You can always change the LED colors in post processing if the green annoys you (it annoys me for sure).
@stateazure7 ай бұрын
@@MIDERA Well KZbin is being weird like that for me often, and by the way YT also blocked your reply here haha..I had to manually accept it, though I think you may have used one of my blocked words (I have it setup very strict to deal with scammers). Your own stuff sounds great and not too much FX imo. I know sometimes people want to hear a dry sound or internal FX only, but we're not doing shop demos! Oh I had a System-8 until now long ago, but I sold it since changing my main MIDI keyboard to a Roland Fantom 8, this kind of covers most of that sound for me. I do have a JD-XA I think I'll keep though, and should probably put that on the desk for an improv soon...so many nice sounds on that thing, and I can see why Ulrich Schnauss liked it so much even though he owns incredible classic synths.

Just found out about your channel, I love your setup, your soundscapes, and I hope one day to have a setup like yours. Where did you get your experience from? Are you self taught or did you study audio engineering? I have been doing classical music most of my life, and I burnt out of the orchestra lifestyle a few years ago. I discovered in early 2023 how passionate I am about music production and I have been self teaching myself and reading book on it, but I am thinking about going back to school for audio engineering to double down on it. What would you recommend? Thank you, you are an inspiration to my music production.

Thank you! I'm completely self-taught over about 30 years+. Since you already must know music theory quite well, I don't think you really need music school etc you could probably just learn music production from KZbin. There are tons of great channels out there (better than mine) for actually learning specific DAWs, and channels for mixing, production, mastering etc. But it's up to you. At least you can try it :)

Great Video thank you so much for the demo. Was this a bitimbral patch you created? been waiting for perfect circuit to get one to demo. I don’t make ambient music, and this has really been pushed in the marketing of ambient music or sountrack kind of stuff. Was wondering if you think it can get aggressive and have you played the super six and how does it compare? Thank you so much.
@stateazure Жыл бұрын
I've never owned or played a Super 6, but I've heard plenty enough demos to know that I wanted the Super Gemini. SG is kind of like 2xSuper 6 I believe, with some extras, so the sound won't be different when using a single layer/patch in the Gemini I guess, which is what I did here. It's just a single layer using the two oscillators. It can get pretty aggressive when you have the layers in full saturation mode and start using cross modulation, sync, ring mod etc. You can also modulate the filter using DDS2/2nd oscillator, and that gets you into pretty aggressive sonic territory.
@kaitlyn__L Жыл бұрын
My experience is with the S6, but that can definitely get dirty and aggressive. While remaining composed and a little tempered (ie not completely ear-shattering) compared to, say, a really (good)nasty overtone-laden FM patch with no integers in sight on a pure digital synth. Basically, the character of the analogue filter shines through whether you're making something warm and lush, or cold and glassy, or harsh and jagged. And it's a really good character imo, I also like using the analogue input to apply its filter to some of my digital synths :)
@skippyfast5115 Жыл бұрын
State Azure do you prefer the Udo super Gemini over the Synthessis 3rd Wave as i am kind of looking into both of them ill find the 3rd wave kinda could sounding compared to the Udo Gemini sounds warm as i also do find the Udo 6 kind a cold sounding
@stateazure Жыл бұрын
Someone else asked the same question to me here. I've done demos of the 3rd Wave on my channel and a livestream iirc. Both are digital/analog hybrids and can sound as cold or as warm as you like, it really depends on the programming/patches you listen to. I think this is a problem with listening to demos, you only ever hear a thin slice of the sonic capabilities of a synth and those sounds are also played/selected by the person who has their own preference/ear for certain sounds. If someone likes cold/harsh sounds and you listen to their demos, you're going to get an impression based on what they like. Saying that, one of the main selling points and great features of the 3rd Wave is that it's a wavetable synth based on the old PPG, which were great at doing gritty/harsh/crunchy wavetable synthesis and most demos you find WILL show this side of it off, but it's no slouch at doing warm, thick analog tones (it has beautiful VA waveforms and very nice analog filter), especially since one of the recent updates which allowed free running oscillators. But anyway, like I said to someone else, although both can cover warm/analog bread and butter VA sounds if that's what you want, these synths are very different in their main sonic capabilities and synthesis and should be chosen for that imo. I personally would prefer the 3rd Wave, since I really like the old PPG sound and what that synth can do with wavetables, and if I want warm/analog sounds, it can do that too. They both sound unique and don't really overlap all that much.
