Thanks for the trip down memory lane. FAktor hall was where I resided during my AF specialty training. The "no admittance" sign is the door I entered every time I came into the building. I remember the mural on the wall with AGE and all the other careers that were there. Mine was AGE. It looks just like it did when I left in 1989. Albeit a little worse for wear.

I grew up near a closed miitary hospital we explored often as a kid. It was full of usable items, stored equipment and surplus supplies. Parts of it were modified and used as low cost housing for college students for a while and much of the specialty areas were used by the local college for many years. Tennis courts, Golf courses a a pool complex were saved.. I played my first handball and saw my first live theater play there. Eventually repair cost were not funded and the last parts were blown up in a Holiywood movie named "Hooper" and the land was converted to a shopping mall. As a kid we had some areas we used as a "Club house" until we were boarded out, and some portions were stored in sections of land nearby. So we had plenty of secret hideouts as kids. There was not much structural issues with the building, just years of no maintenance. It had post offices and clinics inside to serve the military and we played Hospital in them. I always thought it was such a waste to have strong buildings that could have been used for more than storage, but to help people make low cost homes. Since this was in the middle of the city, it was an eye sore and not practical for that use. But this place appears to me a perfect location for a "Back to work" program for the fortunate, or for training location for unskilled workers to renovate. They could teach restoration and maintenance trades making one area livable again, and continue restoring the more difficult areas back to a usable housing complex. That area around the central courtyard I could see an indoor/ outdoor running track. The cafeteria he found could be a low cost restaurant for residents. That could be a training for food service trades and make some income if they did a good job by opening the lobby area as a very unique and safe restaurant to the public market. They could clean up the courtyard for a secure sports venue. All this time, the unskilled labor could have training in restoration, facilities maintenance, Food service and restaurant management , seems they have plenty of classroom space. This way the community has some value and people needing skills can have a home and school with everything they need in one place. Our hospital had a laundry and all the things a micro community would have that relate to returning to independent life. And the nearest community would have a trade school for those needing a new life. Or even a minimum security half way house before prisoners are released into the society. In one of my previous jobs, I trained medical device operators on diagnostic systems. Many times I had to teach in prison clinics and many had inmates learning skills. This would be a perfect place and the first lessons/classes would be renovation and maintenance skills, or hazardous waste removal. I'd rather see tax dollars buying clean up and repair supplies and hiring local skilled instructors than paying for prison cells and guards for non violent offenders. A nearby prison had craft sales and prisoners could sell their work for an income. I still have a leather wallet 50 years old I bought there when my dad took me to craft day. Can still see in my mind how proud the ward of the state was to make a sale to a kid with his dad. This place still looks like it has tremendous potential. Just a refinement of funds and a leader is the need. Now I'm in Atlanta and a famous actor is converting a closed base into a movie production studio. So not a rotting dead property and they are calling for all trades in the local news. Not just actors and extras. They need all jobs there form local painters, plumbers, HVAC, even vehicle mechanics. Combine this property with a training program would be a perfect use and workshop to decrease the prison population by secondary training sites. IF good enough management was used, they could make money by allowing the start up of multiple internal businesses with the goal of trade and startup business by their release date. First year of operation, convert the internal courtyard into a space for public fitness, covered running tracks and housing for the first class of residents learning to operate and manage a public venue, Construction crews will begin exterior renovations and additional resident areas for new trade schools and additional workshops. Electronics training could develop safe secure environments, Open a drive through coffee bar to the public to fund new projects! Office space for probation officers too! Open some areas for special housing for low income graduates from the facility too! The "Penthouse" level that could drive a leadership counsel there that would steer the future of the community and manage the budget. I could continue forever but this place does have incredible potential and could contribute to the local community many ways. More buck from our tax dollars is one! Make it run like a profitable business and half way house. Just don't let a Democrat control it ! Make it build a work force to attract new business not a cheap hotel for ex convicts. They work or go back to prison. They go to classes and pass, and they acclimate to a safe community with a trade, or .....

I think you'll be seeing a LOT more abandoned US military bases and sites now. Under the current president, the military has been shrunk to the lowest levels since WW2, at the very time we are shrinking our military, the rogue nations of the world are becoming more rogue! Cause and effect I'd say.... another subject you may consider for future videos would be one or more of the many US warships that are being taken out of commission now. In fact, we are losing an entire class of large warships, the frigates. So there should be quite a few Oliver Hazard Perry class guided missile frigates sitting in bases now. That means our fleet will have even less protection at a time when our potential enemies are producing ever more effective anti-ship missiles and mines and torpedoes.

Most of the original buildings are there, but aren't occupied. Some have sat vacant since the base closed.
