UFC 279: Chimaev vs. Diaz is an upcoming mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that will take place on September 10, 2022, at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, part of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area, United States.
A welterweight bout between Khamzat Chimaev and former UFC Lightweight Championship challenger (also The Ultimate Fighter 5 lightweight winner) Nate Diaz is expected to headline the event. The promotion originally targeted a UFC Bantamweight Championship bout between current champion Aljamain Sterling and former two-time champion T.J. Dillashaw as the main event, but opted to change plans and move it to UFC 280.
A women's strawweight bout between Hannah Cifers and Melissa Martinez was expected to take place at the event. However, Cifers pulled out due to undisclosed reasons and was replaced by Elise Reed.
A middleweight bout between Jamie Pickett and Denis Tiuliulin was expected to take place at UFC on ESPN: dos Anjos vs. Fiziev, but it was moved to this card due to undisclosed reasons.
Nate Diaz:
Nathan Donald Diaz (born April 16, 1985) is an American professional mixed martial artist, currently signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Before signing with the UFC, Diaz competed in World Extreme Cagefighting, Strikeforce, and Pancrase. He has been in the UFC since winning The Ultimate Fighter 5. Diaz is tied with Joe Lauzon for the third most UFC bonus awards, with 15 in total.
Diaz was expected to face Leon Edwards on May 15, 2021 at UFC 262 in the event's co-headliner, marking the first time a non-main event and non-title bout had been scheduled for 5 rounds.
However, the bout was moved to UFC 263 due to a minor injury sustained by Diaz and eventually took place for five rounds as well.
While Edwards was in control for the vast majority of the bout, Diaz hurt Edwards badly with punches late in the fifth round. Edwards survived the onslaught and managed to win the bout via unanimous decision.

Khamzat Khizarovich Chimaev born May 1, 1994) is a Swedish professional mixed martial artist and freestyle wrestler who competes in the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He formerly competed in Brave Combat Federation (Brave CF). In wrestling, Chimaev is a three-time Swedish National champion. As of April 12, 2022, he is #3 in the UFC welterweight rankings.

Well, Nate is 38-years old, but he fights very seldom. So I'm thinking he's not as shop-worn as a more active 38-year old MMA fighter might be. Nate's chin, legs, and cardio should still be high level, but will he have the speed to sprawl out of least some of Chimaev's takedowns? And can Nate actually win this match? That would seem unlikely, seeing as how Nate cuts like wet Kleenex, plus he must contend with Chimaev's strength and offensive skill-set. Still, Nate does have a chance to pull a trick or two out of his magic bag. An upset is far from impossible. If I were a betting man, I would lay off this match, given the low-yield odds for the favorite.
