It's funny that he says this because martial arts have a long history of using competition for training for war. The Chinese army used to hold lei tai competitions to determine who would instruct the army or serve as a bodyguard for the emperor. The ancient greeks used to use pankration as a training method for war. Tournaments in medieval Europe were used to keep knights in fighting form when there we no battles going on and the modern US army holds MMA competitions as part of their modern army combatives program.Saying competition has no place in modern martial arts is a cop out for people with no real fighting skill to cover up the fact that they can't fight. And despite what "masters" like this claim, martial arts are, first and formost, about fighting

Your over fantasised love and appreciation for my culture, jake, has lead you to embrace a false concept and philosophy of Chinese martial arts. Yes, there is an aspect of gung fu wherein the purpose MAY be to enhance ones health and wellbeing and to cultivate the long style. Utilising the religious philosophy of both chan Buddhism and Taoism, the Chinese martial arts help enrich ones body, mind and spirit. However, to suggest that the original intentions of the founders of Chinese martial arts, be it shaolin or it's earlier predecessors, was purely and primary for this purpose of life cultivation and that combat is just secondary, that is purely ludicrous, my friend. This misconception is both ignorant of history and a disgrace for any practitioner such as yourself who has a high admiration for Zhong Guo Gung Fu. If you look throughout the pages of our history, amongst the centuries, from dynasty to dynasty, china is rich in a history of warfare.
@timothyfreeman979 жыл бұрын
The development and honing of combative skill was not simply to just look pretty and to make the practitioner, as some like to put it, "be made one with oneself". No, the use of barehanded techniques and weaponry were highly pursued because people got down! People fought, people bled, people killed. A martial artists skill is developed with the intention of not being afraid to use it should one find themselves in a situation to do so. You dedicated time and hardworking into your striking skills because you will most definitely need to prepare yourself to strike somebody someday. You roll on the ground with a partner to be able to efficiently grapple and wrestle an opponent. Many Chinese weaponry were not forged with precise skill and labour only to decorate and be an ornament for someone to feel enlightened whilst practising their hobby. No, they were made because people fought.
@timothyfreeman979 жыл бұрын
+Timothy Freeman and martial artists today who dedicate and sacrifice so much of themselves to step into a ring or cage are by no means animals. They, just like you, have a fond appreciation for the arts; and they believe that friendly competition is a great way to both enhance their own skills and promote the art they adore. It is of the most utmost importance that martial artists spar and practise the art of COMBAT. Forms, katas, taolu ought not be the end of the martial artists physical duties. Those who do live Ina fantasy world and are lying to themselves about the skill they possess. All arts that are practised ought to be put to the test; for how could we ever know if they truly work, or if indeed we attain any skill at all? Gong fu people, such as yourself, jake, deserve more than to be something to look at. Prove that your skill works. Friendly competition is not a bad thing.

It's not a martial art. Its a mixture of Martial arts, hence the name. 2 things : Martial arts is not about living a "better peaceful life." It's in the name, its not called Peaceful Arts. Martial by definition means "warlike" . The purpose of fighting or "competing" is to test your skills, you will never know how you will react under pressure. Sparring in the dojo is NOT the same as fighting another martial artist at his peak physical shape under the bright lights in front of the screaming crowd. It's very different.

I am sorry but that is the most moronic thing that I have ever head in my life!!! Machida and MANY others are experts in Karate as well as many other fields and if they were to fight using only that aspect of their expertise they would lose, that is why it is called mixed martial arts. The ONLY setting that a selective style can individually determine the outcome of an altercation is in a competitive setting strictly for that style of martial arts or if the skill gap between the two individuals is so dramatic that they can end the altercation in a quick moment other than that if you have two people in a "CAGE" on the street in a bar or in their home defending them selves have anywhere near the same amount of expertise its going to take more then just one trade to come out on top of an altercation.

Exactly. I have a pretty deep background in Chinese martial arts (xingyi, bagua, Chen taiji, Choy lay fut), and I'm shocked that in 2015 there are still TMA guys who will arrogantly proclaim themselves superior to guys who actually pressure test their skills in the ring, the cage, or on the mat. My experience with BJJ, judo, and MMA guys I've trained with is that they tend to be humble and cool people, without the exaggerated false humility of some TMA people. They're also less likely to have movie-fueled delusions about their own deadliness, and don't say ridiculous things about being "too deadly" for the ring. This guy should get out of his echo chamber and actually spend some time training combat sports. He'd be a better martial artist, and he'd stop making me embarrassed to have a kung fu background.

UFC & Cage Fighting are NOT Real Martial Arts! Many people ask me why I don't fight in the UFC or The Cage as if fighting in the Octagon is the pinnacle of Martial Arts training! The fighting and self defense component of training in Chinese Kung Fu and the Martial Arts is one small SIDE EFFECT of the training to be used only to defend your life or someone else's life! The pinnacle and reason for training in the Martial Arts should be to live a better life (and then protect that life if need be)! :) UFC competitors are in incredible shape and have great skill but the goal of Martial Arts and Chinese Kung Fu practice should be to live a good life! Good video and I totally agree with you. MMA suits the current 'I want it now' generation. TMA were years of hard hard training for enlightenment, good health and if necessary self defence. As much as I like watching UFC type competitions they are only entertainment. Most of the time it is the attitude of the fans and the behaviour of some of the fighters I dislike along with all the trash talk and comparisons about who or what is better. You need to understand the difference between competitive *sport* (for entertainment/money/*ego*) and self-defence. Some people never understand this. Having a huge ego and holding a trophy over your head, whilst the other guy is laying on the floor with his face smashed in isn't really any kind of accomplishment in the great scheme of things. But we have been told (in terms of "martial arts") that this is the pinnacle of our species, somehow?! When I watch a UFC match, I feel like humanity has de-evolved back to cave-men mind-sets. Sitting on top of someone and punching their head into the floor certainly isn't "art". The true meaning is being lost when people only value SPORT/entertainment and nothing else. But Jake explained it very well in the video! The Karate Kid analogy was very good too (even though those films are cheesy as hell!)

The thing is, you cannot really separate all three from each other. No matter how you use martial arts, your health will pretty much improve just from the exercise. And being competitive is not limited to sports, and is really important to improve in martial arts. The real masters always compete with different people and gyms to improve and test their skills/techniques from time to time. Competing with other trains you to be calm in pressured environments, so that when it comes to the point where it is a life and death situation, you will be able to think clearly and be able to apply your techniques

I agree that the purpose of training martial arts is not sport. Of couse not, the purpose is WAR, thats why theres "martial" in martial arts...you know...mars, god of war! You CAN practice martial arts for a better life, or for sport competition, but the purpose is WAR, is the fighting itself. Myagi, in karate kid, says " karate is for defense" so your exemple is wrong. And about MMA, is, actually, the sport who most closely reflects a true unarmed combat in real life, but in a safer enviroment, thats why is its competitors are consider to be the best unarmed fighters in the world.

Well sayd, Mace! I used to take martial arts training from some chinese dude. The guy was good at spinning the staff and all, even though he had gained some weight, but all the training i recieved was clearly geared towards some sort of competitive event. I quit when i recived an injury from pushing myself too far. After that, i decided not to go back there, because he was not teaching me anything i wanted, it was all for hes personal gain. To make things clearer, i did a butterfly kick one too many times and pulled out my leg from my ankle socket. It went back in, but it was painful, and left me unable to do any kind of martial arts for quite some time. Honestly i was not ready for that thing just 2 weeks in to my training, and i was not in good shape or anything. I was skinny, but i could kick high and fast, and i was flexible enough for that. That impressed my trainer, but eventually, it ended with that one final butterfly kick, when i thore out my own ankle. For many years i wished i could go back to martial arts, but i did not want to go back to that place ever again.

It is absolutely about lifestyle . I've trained and competed in kung fu , wushu , San shou for over 25 years and also competed in multi style comps. But I am the exception. 90 % of students I have taught or mentored are not interested in fighting or comps , with kung fu it's about falling in love with the art and knowing your body and the flow of transitioning from one angle or stance to another. The thrill of mastering a controlled kick etc. Martial arts to me are is not unlike dance styles. You can't do the fox trot with someone only skilled in the waltz! It would look amatuerish. Just as i found sparring with karate folk got messy very quickly. Stay strong on your journey Jake :)

Great answer! I believe the UFC question comes up a lot because we live in a world ruled by competition. The end result ? stress (someone is getting fired this year, will it be you?), bad food (you have to mass produce tu be competitive), bad behavior (you are weaker than me so I have the right to take what you have) to name a few. In other words, be competitive or you are worthless. That is what they are saying. Some competition is good of course, but maybe we want something more, maybe we want something else to be at the center of our lives.

The problem I have with UFC is that it's violence for entertainment. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to test your skill in sport or find that using the skills that you've learned can help make a living but if you've learned how to fight just so you can beat someone up and have people cheer your name then it's nothing but violence. Martial arts is more than swinging your fists, there are many philosophies to it, cultural tradition, the betterment of yourself not just physically but mentally. Anyone can learn to throw a punch and claim to be a fighter but it takes a true martial artist to know and understand the meaning that fist and why you're throwing it and when not to throw it all. I'm training in Muay Thai and various Chinese martial arts such as Baji Quan, Zui Quan and Hei Hu Quan and stengthen my body and mind so that I could protect the people I care for and be able to raise my fist for my beliefs when words no longer cut it and to be enriched by the heritage tied to martial arts.

Martial arts certainly have benefits such as health, confidence, discipline etc, but that's *not* their primary purpose. The primary purpose of martial arts is to teach you how to fight in whatever context the art was designed for, it's as simple as that. Arguing otherwise is like saying the purpose of a car is to be stylish and comfortable. No it's purpose is to get you from A to B. If it fails at that it fails as a car. As a practicing martial artist of 35yrs with a black belt in Karate, Blue belt in TKD, several years of BJJ and Kickboxing experience I have to say that I believe MMA has been the best thing to happen to martial arts in the last 2000yrs. As you mentioned the purpose of Martial Arts is self mastery in all areas of ones life. An additional purpose of Martial arts is to fight the enemy, whoever or whatever that may be, you cant tell me samurai warriors were not martial artist, or roman gladiators were not martial artists. I like to have an open mind and try to appreciate all aspects of the martial arts even if some areas may not appeal to me personally or I may not understand some aspects fully.

He's absolutely right. Each and every time I concentrate on the physical brutality of wing chun I want to invite confrontation. But, when access the meditation side I feel at peace yet ready too. This world we live in forces us to fight for balance, to know when to and not to, to at times force us on one side. I believe that is where the struggle lies and where the decisions are made. Also a note for young folk re MAA. Full contact fighting is brutal on your body and can have long lasting deeper scars as a result of inflicting pain on others. No matter how much training you do to harden your body , one on one combat is exactly that , combat and it hurts !

The thing is, the only way to improving in martial arts is to actually fight. Fighting with different people, different styles.... and tournaments like UFC are one of the safest ways to do it, due to the rules in place, medics on standby and for some, protective gear. You can say all you want about how martial arts is for self-defense, self-improvement or happiness, but if someone jumps you and you are not used to using your techniques against people who actually resist, you probably just putting yourself in more danger.

I agree with what is said here, I've practiced and teach Trad Tai Chi Chuan and I'm tired of MMA being the place to prove things. We have full contact San Shou competitions, Push Hands tournaments and spar like any other art . We also have what we call Wu De (martial etiquette) . We become better people and healthier. The main purpose is longevity. Self defence against disease and of course an attacker. MMA has had Tai Chi Chuan fighters, I know three very well from our system, so no one is saying it's a sin to cage fight. It's a choice . I respect those who do and those who don't. It's the bad mouthing I don't subscribe to . Cheers and best wishes

Uhh,,ya. So I seem to remember this Wing Chun/Gung--Fu guy back in the day used to talk about how people should not limit themselves when it comes to martial arts, that they should not focus on "dead patterns" and should incorporate whatever works to win a fight. You see, he also studied philosophy and this most likely helped in swaying him from a monotone and redundant state of being. He studied western boxing, judo, jiu jitsu, wrestling, and other forms of striking arts, taking the knowledge from each as their was no singular style but as he said...the "human style". This "human style" can be best portrayed in todays day by elite MMA practitioners who pride themselves in studying multiple arts and applying all of this into finishing a fight as fast and proficiently as possible.

If you're learning any martial art you should be sparring, even if your main focus is self defense. It doesn't matter if you don't want to hurt anyone. Everyone looks good hitting pads or the bag, its completely different when someone is trying to punch you back. You learn pretty quickly what does and doesn't work when you spar and that is crucial for applying what you learn. Get use to taking a punch and still having a clear mind.

I am taekwondo, jujistsu, kick boxers, boxer, and a Muay thia martial artist. I agree with what you are saying. And this is why I battle between myself with competitive martial arts and traditional martial arts. I try to equal myself in both aspects, but I find the older I get (I am 21 right now) the more I am beginning to lean towards the traditional side of martial arts. And it is true traditional martial artist have a higher degree in Knowledge, skill, and combat. Cause of the fundamentals and core of the martial art they are learning. So there is aspects of this video I agree on and disagree. I truly think the one way to be a better martial artist is to fight many different types of martial artist and one of the only few ways to do this is competitive, tournaments. We must test our vessels. Like bruce lee said "a wooded board doesn't punch back." and sparring is great indeed, but I find even sparring can only get you so far. We need to push ourselves, our body and get out of that comfortable feeling, by going out and fighting other martial artist in the world. All in a manner of respect of course.

There is always someone who can do something better than you which doesn't mean that you are a fake or a fraud. A lot of people want to make the Martial Arts about Race and Nationality rather than Knowledge. I don't believe everything you say but I really respect what you are doing.

Hi, Jake. Surely you know that the notion of Chinese martial arts as holistic health exercises was essentially an early 20th century marketing ploy by guys like Yang Cheng Fu and Sun Lu Tang. Prior to that, traditional wushu systems were about fighting, with far less time being spent on tao lu forms training. Since you're so critical of combat sports competition, I wonder how you feel about the lei tei matches in the 1920's and '30's, in which arts like xingyiquan and shuai jiao earned their reps? I don't think the notion of kung fu styles as new age health exercises is very traditional at all, and owes more to David Carradine than to any legitimate sifu. I think this image has been embraced by modern CMA teachers, who see their arts sliding toward obsolescence, with kwoons becoming glorified after-school care programs while adults serious about self-defense flock to Muay Thai, MMA, boxing, and BJJ for their training. The sanda guys have the right idea about training Chinese martial arts. Putting stuff like this up in 2015 just makes CMAs look like an out of touch relic.

I don't mean to play devil's advocate here, but who are you to tell us what martial arts should mean to us? You make an excellent point: martial arts is about living a better life. Do we all find fulfillment in the same things? Of course not. A martial art isn't a "goal"; it's a catalyst to achieving goals. A MMA fighter's goal might me the UFC gold, your goal might be a healthy, quiet life, my goal is to pass down Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a teacher one day...we all aren't in this game for the same prize at the end, and some of us aren't even sure about what we want in this journey. But we have all embarked upon it, from the showboating boxer to the kind old Kyokushin Karate master. We might not always agree, but we must respect each other and our decisions as to why we train and do what we do.

To me, there's something "poisonous" about two guys, filled with a combative, arrogant spirit, trying to cause each other maximum damage and make each other bleed, for the entertainment of a bloodthirsty crowd. I just don't think it raises humanity to a better place. But martial arts as a path of total life enhancement? THAT'S a great idea!!

I normally don't comment on these vids, but I have this problem presented at the moment. I'm being taught to fight in a ring for trophies as a living. I have no desire of living that lifestyle, and to top it off! Doing security work for big wigs (VIPs/rich people) is set as the example of where I'm supposed to be. It is extremely emotionally and mentally draining to me hear this speech week after week. It totally kills my drive to train for the reasons that these example are terrible. Why would I want to protect people for money when by and large these folks hate humanity? Why would I protect a politicians who start wars for profit, and enslave people? Why should I tip my hate to pop stars who brainwash the masses? Which is the antithesis of what an artist should be doing. Shit I just want to do my karate, hunt, draw, play music, sculpt, and be left alone. Any people I help along the way is icing on the cake. Grr talk about a rock and a hard place.

I think martial arts are great exercise, promote perseverance, serenity and respect. I dont think the purpose is injuring people. I studied Tae Kwon Do in my 40s. My balance was shot and I was flexibility challenged. I excelled at sweating. I had the confidence I could get out of a room if I needed to. Studied under Flying Tiger from kukkiwon. Positive experience.

Its sad how people my age perceive martial arts ( I'm 14). I do Shotokan Karate and whenever I mention it people just act like its stupid or assume I just do a bunch of flips and crazy acrobatics. I'm interested in karate as a way to focus and relieve stress but I have to act like I just learn how to beat people up to avoid people getting the wrong impression and telling me I'm a wimp. Its sad that Asian martial arts are seen in such a distorted way in the UK.

Question & Thought Experiment: What do you think the world would look like if the majority of hours humans spend (imaginary or actual) doing and watching Martial (defined as: "appropriate to war; warlike") Arts (blocking, striking...) and instead invested in teaching people how to model and improve other humans lives (love, services, healthy...)?

I have a traditional martial art passed in my family named Mudokwan, maybe you heard of it? But ever since I can remember I was taught never to use it and when I fought a cocky MMA fighter they lost so bad. This is why ... The mindset is so different you train to live while the other person trains to fight. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge UFC fan but even in the octagon they have rules that cut martial arts off (For example the no small joint manipulation rule in the unified martiak arts rules and regualtions thar UFC and Pride uses takes aikido completely out the MMA world). Comparing those two is comparing two different worlds, as a person who loves sports and Professional fighting... Traditional martial arts will defeat ANY modern MMA sport fighter. We are all entitled to our opinion and this is mine.

I'm just curious sir, what is your personal opinion of other styles of martial arts that didn't originate from achieving a healthy lifestyle? :o Don't get me wrong, I agree with your example of Chinese Martial arts entirety, I'm just wondering where styles such as: Krav Mgaw, Arnis, or Capoiera would fall under. These styles were intended to kill (Originally), and though there are similarities to the self defense aspect when compared to other styles, do you consider them "martial arts" at all? What is your insight?
@convict2408 жыл бұрын
i'm sorry that your question was never answered but i'll do my best. it's a matter of balance. if you look at capoeira, you'll see that there is an incredibly high demand on the body. thus the physical. and then when you see the practitioners playing capoeira, you'll see something very peaceful and not violent. it's hard to explain with words but you sense something beautiful about it. there isn't anyone getting their face bashed in. and they could be quite lethal if they were fighting for real but they don't. there is a sort of harmony to it. and that makes it very similar to the oriental arts even though it originated in brazil. now, if you look at krav maga, it is nothing like the oriental martial arts. and the oriental martial arts masters probably wouldn't even call it martial arts. it's a bunch of combat techniques that were put together for the sake of military use. but it stops at that. there is absolutely nothing more to it. arnis and the other filipino martial arts are closer to the real martial arts. maybe it's because they are asian in origin? IDK. but their combat techniques are spot on and that's for sure. but the FMA are mainly dueling arts. it's not the whole package like the chinese martial arts are. but what i noticed is that people who desire to become complete martial artists who like the FMA train in other arts to fill what FMA itself doesn't fulfill. i'm sorry to make my answer so lengthy but if you train in real martial arts for a while, you'll get a sense of what is real and what is not. my best answer is that real martial arts are about balance. and a very special kind of balance at that.

The way I see it is that sport is just one aspect of martial arts and can be a good tool. But I agree, any organized competition is not the highest test of martial arts. (And neither is a street fight or self defense situation if anyone thought I was implying that)
@joshuadurham282510 жыл бұрын
While I understand your message here, but you have it backwards. Martial Arts in their pure form in history were combat focused. The impact to the health, and mind were the bi products. These arts all have origins to eras before the abundance of firearms. Today many train for health, as this is an outstanding by product to the training, but without martial intent and understanding of the movements, one might as well study dance. While not a huge fan of MMA, there have been positive impacts to martial arts since there inception. It does allow for training of many techniques needed for actual combat, and prepares one to face an opponent who is not compliant to a technique. While many techniques are illegal in MMA, this type of match does present the closest one can get to a live combat situation and remain legal.

I agree with you. If you're all about fighting, you don't need Kung Fu or Karate or Judo or whatever. You can get it somewhere else. But if you want more--and that "more" is sort of up to you, what you want to get out of it--then martial arts might be for you.

It depends on what you mean for "real" martial arts. Stuff like boxing, mma and muay thai are excellent for hand to hand combat. If you are referring to battlefield tactics like using a sword, pike, bow&arrow etc. then yes, that gives you a huge advantage. These open hand fighting styles teach you how to deal with someone who doesn't have a weapon.

Wrote this in response to a friend's comment on facebook in negative response to this video. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me: " I think you are confusing what this guy is actually talking about. Youre blinding yourself with your self-created misconceptions. If martial arts was just merely for sport, there are better sports that would be of better benefit. MMA is a good example of a better sport to train for. same with football(strength and toughness) or basketball(speed and stamina) or gymnastics(flexibility, body control, and strength) or something. "Sports" are all about competition. Literally. Pure competition is (defeating your opponent at all costs, within defined and enforced rules) what makes the beginning and end of sports. If you cannot defeat your opponent or do not at least have a chance to be able to, there is literally no point in participating in the sport at all. Its why athletes (athletes, like MMA fighters, are different than 'martial artists') retire at an age limit, and also why women are often seperated from men in most sports. Combat training is the ultimate form of 'sport'. Combat training is defeating your opponent at all cost, as efficiently as possible, by any (and as few) means necessary. If you're a navy seal or army ranger, youre not gonna learn MMA, youre not gonna learn martial arts, youre not gonna go to self-defense class of any type. All of those have defined rules. Youre gonna learn CQC, youre gonna learn combat sambo, youre gonna learn how to shoot different gun types on a range. Youre gonna learn how to kill so you wont BE killed. Thats where the guns and cannons come in. Martial ARTS are different. They started out as combat training in their respecive days, but became something more. Bruce Lee, pretty much the epitome of 20th century martial arts, described 'martial arts' as "The ultimate EXPRESSION of self and the body", or something similar to that. 'Expressing onesself'/'sending a message'...that is the goal of any ART, be it drawing, painting, sculpting, or martial arts, or whatever. Sport or competition (i.e. 'sparring', in this case) is a PART of it, but its mostly a means to an end. The end is 'self-defense', not to kill or defeat your opponent, and if you've ever taken a legitimate martial art at all, you will always hear instructors say "I'm teaching you these techniques so that you will NEVER have to use then in real life". The goal of martial arts and kung fu and the like is NOT to defeat your opponent. The goal of martial arts is to IMPROVE ONESSELF (strengthening your spirit and mind and conquering one's body and desires), with being able to protect onesself and others as a byproduct of that ONE major goal. Youre trying to prefect the 'art' of being alive. Anyone who's ever been to church (and payed attention) or has been a part of any type of religion already knows how important that goal is. Stuff like this is why martial arts are still practiced by people outside of their prime age range."
@TheBLACKSTARmovement10 жыл бұрын
one other thing i'd like to add... SPORTS like mma, ufc, baseball, football, etc are only effective during a person's prime condition. I'd argue that because the nature of how sports are (defeating your opponent at all cost, within the limits of enforced rules), combat sports like MMA can be as effective or more effective than martial arts in real life situations (under certain conditions). HOWEVER, this also is in assumption that YOU ARE IN PRIME CONDITION (in regards to self and compared to competition). If you are an MMA fighter that is 5'1" and 100 pounds, youre wasting your time, and MMA will be totally ineffective for you, self-defense or otherwise. Martial arts, however, are useful and deadly for any age range and body type. Look at any old feeble grandmaster and you will see why. Of course, if you are in prime condition, you are already able to become one of the best fighters in the world with martial arts, but even outside of prime condition, martial arts can still be deadly and effective.
@briankaplan62489 жыл бұрын
You realize that the core systems that comprise the sport of MMA are martial arts, right? Muay Thai, BJJ, judo and sambo are all martial arts. I would classify boxing and wrestling as martial arts as well. As for these styles being ineffective as you age, there is footage of Helio Gracie rolling in his 80's. Seriously, the street vs sport dichotomy is so 1995. Spend some time on bullshido, and less time in cult-like TMA echo chambers. Sifu-worship isn't good for anyone, least of all the Sifu being worshipped.

TheBLACKSTARmovement I read the second comment tat I responded to, not the 58 line original comment, some of which I agree with. As far as army rangers my understanding is that the combatives program practiced by Rangers is largely derived from BJJ, wrestling and boxing, with some knife work thrown in. Tim Kennedy has demonstrated some Army combatives before, and it's basically MMA. While the Seal used to do a lot of the old WWII Fairbarn and Sykes style CQC stuff, I've heard they've moved to a more combat sport oriented program. As for combat sambo, it's essentially Russian MMA heavily derived from judo, wrestling, and boxing. Ever hear of a guy named Fedor? As far as weight classes and the like, the early UFCs had none. strangely, the winners were all 180+. The myth of size being irrelevant to a martial artist was never true, though Royce Gracie, Fedor, and some others certainly slew some giants in the early days of the UFC and Pride. Sorry for not reading yor original comment.
