Everything I've heard about Wanderlei points to him being one of the, if not the, most fan-friendly fighters in the world. I've heard first-hand accounts of him getting in arguments with property owners and event managers because they wanted to cut off fans' access to him and he wanted to stay for hours on end to make sure that he got to interact with every single person that came to see him. Pretty great for one of the best of all time.
