Best chance is for poirier to work like a madman on his submission defence and not getting finished. If the fight goes the entire way, he'll have at least 5 opportunities to find a finish on the feet. Every round starts on the feet.

Best chance is to get on his bike and avoid being back against the cage at all costs. But it's very unlikely to happen. It's a 5 round fight; Makhachev is very patient and very methodical in his approach; he won't rush anything and let Poirier come to him, and when he does, he'll counter him & initiate the clinch position. And from that moment, Poirier will be in trouble. Khabib laid out the blueprint, Oliveira doubled down on that. So what do you think Makhachev is gonna do ?

The truth is though, is Islam is more sloppy on the feet than Khabib. Khabib would’ve kept Volk and Charles on the ground the entire fight, Islam likes to strike which yes a good counter striker but Dustin is the best boxer in the lightweight division. Not to mention, he has a weak chin. Being knocked out, and rocked by Volk multiple times in their first fight isn’t a good sign for him to keep it on the feet. He’s more skilled in his approach, but he isn’t as clean in his fights as Khabib. Dustin has a good chance of chinning him.

I guess I think it’s just an ego thing with Islam, he liked to stand and strike and I think he gets compared to Khabib all the time that he wants to have his own style of dominating opponents in his fights than just wrestling. He did that with Volk when he could’ve just kept wrestling with him. We’ll have to see.
