He had no other option. Other than sit till next year. It doesn't matter anyway cause as soon as the bell rings when Jon Jones returns Tom or Curtis won't have a belt technically. The interim Champ is gone as soon as the undisputed champ returns. This is just a number 1 contenders match it's not a champ fight. Even at that Jon sounds like he wants Alex next so there is a chance Curtis and Tom won't get the next shot at the real belt.
