@@PelicanPsychanalyste It was super SUPER close but having rewatched this fight 3-4 times, DDP just slightly had the upper hand because he was throwing more combinations of different shots, head kicks, body kicks, overhands, spinning backfist and on top of that taking him down and holding him down for 20-30 seconds each takedown and also landing a couple of huge shots that literally had Stricklands head leaking blood, it was close but all those extra things he was doing added up on the scorecards.

When I watched it live I thought Strickland won (not easily) but clearly. More accurate striking, landed the harder cleaner shots, done more damage etc. Rewatching dooesn't change my mind. Stricklands fight style is just so bad for the judges to score because he conserves so much energy and fights such a compact and efficient style, it sometimes looks like he isn't doing much. 1,2 and a teep are all you need to be a world champ (and the best defense in the world) He got robbed against the black dude with the crystals for the same reason

Takedowns are scored as nothing if you do no damage with ground and pound nor threaten with submissions. Du Plessis did neither, with any takedown. Takedowns are only counted if there is nothing else to count, no strikes and no submissions, which was hardly the case in this fight, at any point. The takedowns may have allowed Du Plessis to land some shots because the threat of the takedown was a distraction for Strickland, but even that effect was not obvious.

Most underrated strike in MMA is the jab. A couple notable exceptions who finished fights with the jab, are GSP, and the Spider 🕷️ Silva. Watch the fight between GSP and Koscheck. GSP shatters his orbital bone 🦴 with repeated speed and power jabs stopping the fight as Koscheck basically tapped to strikes🤣. An untrained audience doesn’t understand what fighters are attempting to set up with beautiful jutsu.

My guess is Dricus will win by finish in the second fight. Trying not to play favorites but Dricus seems to make adjustments mid fight much better, while Strickland is just very technically sound to begin with. I think Dricus will come out a lot harder and work more with his wrestling in the rematch. Strickland has godly defense at this point, but I’m not sure he’ll be able to shut down that explosive edge if Dricus focuses on chopping his legs and taking him down. That is, if Strickland neglects to check his kicks, which he did for two whole rounds in this fight. When his kick defense was on, it was on point, but he randomly just stopped doing it after notably fucking up Dricus foot. Didn’t make much sense.

The only way I can see this as a W for duplessis is if the judges gave outsized importance to the takedowns that gave him zero submission attempts, zero ground and pound, and virtually zero control time. While also giving no importance to the stuffed takedowns, kicks, and punches. I can see a world where maybe the judges just saw the fight a little different than myself. But after seeing strickland V costa they're obviously biased towards him, he dominated Costa, it wasnt even close, and it was still a split decision.

I really think that came back to bite him, which was weird because he had already fucked up Dricus foot in the first round. It may have been that Dricus threw a lot less orthodox kick combos in round 2 and 3, because that’s where strikes were most contested. Kicks definitely edged out the jab here I think.

Watched this fight twice now still don’t see how DDP wins this fight. DDP takes round 4 by a large margin but besides that I don’t see much else from him, takedowns we’re minimal control and damage, kicks and jabs are weak due to Stricklands checking and defence. The jab of Strickland was just better damage wise and it’s especially seen on DDPs face, if you don’t agree you should watch the press conference and just look. Looking forward to the rematch.

Dricus Du Plessis has a style where he always throws like he’s gassed, but it’s actually pretty intelligent because the more relaxed you are when you throw it looks less technical but you conserve energy. I remember when I would go for long distance runs and I would start to get tired, I would start to almost shut off certain muscles in my legs and core and I would feel more fluid even though I was tired. My friends would make fun of me and tell me I looked like a had cerebral palsy or was drunk, but it’s because I wasn’t using the muscles to stand perfectly upright and balanced, I just made sure each foot pushed me forward and it worked.

DDP 2,3,4. Sean 1,5. Judges made the right call. In no way shape or form did Sean win round 2. Round 3 was a lot closer but I still gave the edge to DDP. He started that round off strong and kept the pace up for the entire round. He was landing until about 2 minutes left in the round, and that's when Strickland began to evade and hit DDP with jabs consistently. Even then neither guy did a lot of damage but I took DDP's 3 minutes of being in control vs Seans 2 minutes of being in control

I think alot of people fail to realize strickland is a conservative fighter, he controls his opponents hands, throws loose punches, and throws harder punches when his opponent is coming in to use their own energy against them. It looks lazy, buts it’s actually smart. That style works for most opponents, unfortunately DP was able to work through his wind, and didnt get knocked out. Stricklands style only works if you plan to wind and knockout someone.

Round 1: 10-9 Strickland. Du Plessis did have some success with his side kicks and his takedown, but he really didn't do much with either, ultimately Strickland's consistent jab set him up for a hard shot to close the round out. 10-9 Strickland. Round 2: 10-9 Du Plessis: Here Strickland's jab did land consistently but he ultimately didn't do all that much damage. It was a close round but in the back half of the round Du Plessis was able to effectively pressure Strickland, cut him and take him down, even landing some good shots on the champ as he got up. 19-19 Even. Round 3: 10-9 Du Plessis: Not a ton happened in that round so Du Plessis takes it largely based on activity. The head kick he landed early was the only meaningful strike that landed the whole round, and he was largely the aggressor. 29-28 Du Plessis. Round 4: 10-9 Du Plessis: Probably the clearest round of the fight as DDP picked up the aggression, beating him up on the feet, just absolutely ragdolling him and taking him down. 39-37 Du Plessis. Round 5: 10-9 Strickland: The clearest round Strickland had in the fight, but it was too little too late. He fought aggressively here and remained defensively responsible, he was far more willing to let his right hand go instead of over relying on his jab as the only weapon to keep Du Plessis back. 48-47 Du Plessis. Overall I think it came down to aggression. Strickland had a lot of success with his jab throughout the fight, but when Du Plessis connected, he was landing the more effective damaging punches which had a more immediate effect compared to the cumulative effects of the jab of Strickland. DDP did nothing with his takedowns. Should receive no points for that its insane. Tackling someone and them winning the fight back to the feet everytime is more impressive than the tackler lol. Makes no sense. Thats why boring fighter exist that just press weight on you the whole fight and "control" you while doing minimal damage. So someone that keeps winning the fight back to the feet should nullify any points given for a take down. Just my opinion but watching this fight a second time its clear Sean should of won.

Early on in Sean‘s career he would shoot takedowns and go hard after his opponents. I’d like to see him incorporate more of his original style into his long range striking style. He’s definitely gonna have to switch some things up for his rematch.
