I'd love to see a statical analysis of winning percentage of middle of the pack competitive teams when a dominant champion is added to their ranks. You just have to think that the winning mindset is elevated to higher and higher levels the more champions you are surrounded by, and I'd be willing to bet that it manifests in a statistically higher winning percentage. It may seem obvious, but I think it would be interesting to see it represented that way.

a lot of it depends on whether that dominant person is a leader or overly competitive. a leader will help everyone get better, and that will in turn help the leader improve more: they are meeting better skills. but some people like to dominate and use leader position to keep dominance, and this can force out many other skilled athletes from the gym. for sure getting time working with an exceptionally skilled practitioner is a best way to gain skill...

I don't imagine he would be the reputed coach he is if he were simply telling Gordon "you're better than him, you got this." Why would Gordon still be improving if that were the mentality. Not to mention "I'm going to crush this bum" has historically proven a better sales pitch than "he's a good opponent"

Yeah, and I don't think John want's him too either. It's a completely different sport, and he would have to train a long time and completely switch it up. He's super super talented in jiu jitsu, and I think it's likely he's going to try to be the best he can possibly be in that instead of going to MMA, which is understandable, although I would love to see him in MMA. The problem is he can't do both and be the best.
