It's a "Gi" not a kimono. And IF your opponet grabs your Gi you then have a solid connection to him... so that xwhen you strike him there's no give-- no shock absobtion.

In the early 2000's, I worked with a guy from Brazil, he came from the same town that Royce came from, and he told me the Gracie's had a bad reputation there for going to bars and clubs and starting crap with people ..coming on to women with boyfriends, then beating the daylights out of them (the boyfriends). He said they were real jerks.

Yoshida isn't just a black belt, he is a gold-medalist judoka. He gave prime Wanderlei Silva all he could handle, twice. He beat Mark Hunt and other name fighters. Royce is just that good at stopping people from doing what they want. In fact, this fight is right after he lost to Wand and right before he beat Hunt.

If he were fighting another karate-ka in a karate tournament you would see a more traditional approach. But this is a mixed style venue hence the departure from strickly karate. He quite correctly did not guard or block a kick to the groin because they are strictly forbiden. His opponent is a cheater pure and simple.

I'm not a fan of Royce Gracie. I was at first, but after seeing cheap shots, a few times, then listening to Superfoot Bill Wallace on judging UFC1, i stopped being a fan. BJJ is a great art. But it has the same limitation as most fighting stules sanitized for the ring. Traditional juijitsu much better, because it uses everything-punches, kicks, knees...my grandfather was a traditional jiujitsu expert, and no one could touch him even in his 70s. Of course he boxed and wrestled too, but he was a tough mofo, for a 150 pound, 5'6" man

BJJ is a constant game of tug-o-war, both fighting for control over the other, I know that it was a mistake to wear a full Gi because not only did that enable Gracie to grab and pull at Yoshida, but also it had to be stifling! In my opinion, BJJ is only useful for escaping unfavorable positions and staying keen on submission defense. Had Gracie kicked me in the purse like that, i'd have been very pissed. Quickly make him regret it with any variety of leg kick, repeatedly throwing it until he cant stand anymore. Don't get me wrong BJJ is a very effective martial art, but the weaknesses it has on its own are quickly exposed in a real fight w/o rules.
