Schenker has always been the most melodic and precise guitar player in rock, every note means something and not just inane twiddling of scales. His solos are pieces of art that should be more widely acknowledged.

UFO is arguably the most underappreciated band of any genre of (rock) music. They called their first album 'Phenomenon'

That was their third album, actually. They had two albums in more acid rock/space rock style in 1970 and 1971. "Phenomenon" was the first one with Schenker.

"Who made who...who made you..." The gifts of GOD are without repentance. Saw UFO fronting AC/DC on the American Tour at the Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee. Michael Schenker was mesmerizing...AC/DC came and watched him from behind the veloured stage curtains. By the time Schenker lifted up from his pedal, our faces were on the floor between knees of our skirts. When that happened, there was a loud gasp...and deafening applause. Schenker was phenomenal! Wispy, unassuming, uncharacteristic, and pure flying V phenomenal guitarist. We humbly thank the LORD for Michael and his family, especially his dad, according to his brother Rudolph, a/k/a, the Scorpions, for allowing Michael to leave school and play for us. Thank you LORD!!!

In my opinion Michael Schenker is one of the greatest guitarist of his time he influenced me for sure and a whole generation of great guitarists. a lot of people today don’t know who he is and that’s really sad. I can say without reservation that strangers in the night UFO live is absolutely positively one of the greatest live rock albums ever bar none

I agree about Schenker but, Led Zeppelins 1978's the song remains the same album is IMO #1 and Jimmy Page is #1. Schenker is top 5 for sure. I was 14-15 years old at that time and had dreams (like many others)of making it in a rock band but I soon realized I did not have near the talent needed to actually make a living doing it. Definitely Rock's best period. Another couple runner up's on live albums are, Scorpions 1978's Tokyo tapes(another Schenker) and Rush's 1976 Rush live album All the worlds a stage, Geddy's voice was in it's prime and talk about under rated guitarists, Alex Lifeson never gets mentioned in the GOAT discussion

I bought that Live UFO Album in 1978 when a senior in high school. Still have it and a bunch of other live acts on vinyl as well from that era. Double live Gonzo , Outlaws “ bring’em back alive” , live Who & Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and countless hundreds of others . Anyone who was fortunate enough to live through that great era in music back then knows what I’m talking about here. Never again will we see such an amount of amazing talents and music . Today’s stuff just doesn’t cut it in my opinion.

People ask us hardcore UFO fans what is it all about, what's the one thing that puts UFO above everyone else in the rock & roll business. It's the gallop, that's right when Michael Shenker & Pete Way played together there was a gallop (like a horse at full speed) effect in the music. Horsepower was what made UFO the best.
@IAm1InTheIAm8 ай бұрын
Oh you nailed it: Gallop. Driving Force. I believe that's the quality of what has made this my Go-To Song default for 40+ years, when doing something 110% and second best doesn't count: on the track, on a fast wave, a big mountain, a big hill; when you need to pull out all the stops and just go....that's UFO.👍

I am 62 and saw UFO in the early 1970`s at the Nottingham boat club. I spent the whole set with my mouth open as I could not get over how fantastic they were as a band. Michael Schenker stood to one side with Gibson flying V between his legs, blonde hair hanging down, and the licks he played was absolutely spellbinding. One of the best gigs I ever saw. I still think they are the most underrated band along with Trapeze. Unfortunately, when Schenker left I felt they went down hill. I saw them at the Capitol Theater in Flint Michigan in the Early 70's. I'll never forget it. Michael Schenker stayed to the rear until it was time to solo. In head to toe black leather he comes to the front of the stage, stops, jams that white flying V into his right leg, every eye in the place on him. After the blazing solo he would retreat to the rear giving the audience time to close their mouths and reflect on what they just saw and heard.

Accidentally seen UFO's Stangers in the Night tour in Minneapolis in 1978 as we were going to see Rick Derringer. We never even heard of UFO before even though they were headlining. We almost walked out of the show after Rick Derringer, as we thought UFO had to be some weird punk/new wave band, but decided we would stay for a couple songs to check them out and were BLOWN AWAY! (We were also tripping out bawls big time that night) I never forget it! It then lead us to discover the Scorpions, and since then 45 years ago, I've been a UFO/MSG and Scorpions fanatic, and amateur guitarist, trying to pick up and learn their music. These bands are never forgotten! The sheer fact of the matter is, the bands who came after will testify that UFO influenced them and you can hear it in several bands compositions. Thats fact. Far from forgotten. Hell i'm only 30, got into them and seen them because Maiden spread the word about them. These bands live on by the passing of the torch. Try and tell me the drums, bass and guitar from Lights Out ain't an influence on The Trooper for instance.

I couldn't agree more. Michael pours his soul out on every single lead that he has ever done. Definitely the anomaly not the norm. 👌👍

Saw UFO open for RUSH in 77. One of the best shows to this day.

Was that Farewell To Kings tour? My first Rush concert, unfortunately, UFO didn't open for them in Saint Louis. Jan 1978 April Wine opened. UFO came at Mississippi Nights small venue but I got the flu with temp and had tickets pissed. Never saw them in concerted.

@@RushandUFO yes it was the kings tour. Max Webster also played.

I saw Rush, same tour just outside of Chicago. It was my first concert ever. A couple months later, same venue, I saw UFO. Cheap Trick opened. Michael Schenker was notorious for not showing up at the time, so we were leery. I can still remember the lights alternating blue and green when they opened with that long, driving intro to “Love to Love”. Oh, the memories...15 again. Edit: whoops, wrong tour. I saw Rush on 2/11/77, All the world’s a stage tour.

Schenker hardly ever plays it same way twice, improvisational genius in every way, uli jon roth as well...they did the neo classical way before the other up and coming shredders, but even so they did it with amazing finesse and rhythmic virtuosity rarely seen, so underrated..I could watch them play for hours.

The Phenomenon album has a whole lot of incredible ax work on it, a very young Shenk fresh from his separation from the master musicians in Scorpions, still playing Rudy’s Flying V (permanently borrowed, by the by)

I'm awestruck every time I watch and listen to Michael Schenker's guitar playing. Looking at this video reminds me why I've been a huge UFO and MSG fan for decades.

Start your night with Rush, All the world's a stage. Then onto Thin Lizzy, Live and Dangerous then close your concert night with UFO, Strangers in the night. Although you can't go wrong whatever order you put them in.

Don't believe a word is one of my favourite songs, but only the live and Dangerous version. Likewise with still in love with you, which never fails to hit me.

I played pete wades bass at my very first concert in Hammond Indiana in 1978 I was just 16 yrs old and a progressive drummer at the time. It was the Hammond civic center and I was front stage and Lights Out was playing. He looked at me and knew I could reach his bass and nodded at me to pluck his strings while he played the notes It was something I will never forget. Great Concert

That brief interview with Phil Collen was noteworthy. Just from the few licks he played, it's proof he's a monster player. Whether or not he'll go down in history in a legendary way like Michael Schenker, time will tell.

It is interesting to note how much better Michael played when Paul Raymond took over on rhythm guitar - it freed Michael to focus on playing lead and did not tie him to carrying the song's rhythm. Paul was a great add to UFO and later to MSG!
