If you plot your reference color on the color space as well, you can image a line from your color to a base and that is the direction the "dot" will move if you add that base. In your example, yellow base will actually bring it green as well as yellow.

Another example, suppose that you were toning pantone purple using violet and rhodamine. Rhodamine would actually move it up and slightly right instead of slightly down and right.

Intuitively this makes sense, since yellow is "greener" than magenta. If you add yellow to magenta your a value will decrease.

But not supposed to tone process colors. Magenta is a process color. If you cut it or extend it it'll prolly go yellow anyway. But I HAVE had to tone process colors myself

where i work we have a "green shade yellow" pigment. So adding that would be a perfect solution :)

Sounds like it! That would be one I'd draw down and plot as a point, too
