Expressions of gratitude, a music review
October 29, 2011
Expressions is a patriotic multi-lingual album dedicated to the royal couple and the people of Bhutan.
The album which was released during the royal wedding on October 13, contains songs in Dzongkha, Tshangla and Lhotshamkha in different genres, sung by a talented group of Bhutanese singers.
The album has six songs. It explores the feelings of love, devotion and praise for one's homeland as well as the dedication and commitment of the people as they pay homage to the Wangchuck dynasty for its selfless effort and contribution to the peace and prosperity of the country.
Namgay Jigs, the popular rigsar singer, sings solo first track of the album Butshu Ngegi Ama. The beautiful landscape of Bhutan is an allegory of a mother who is always loved. The song then calls upon Bhutanese to preserve and uphold Bhutan's unique identity and to follow the noble path paved by the kings. The song shifts to a strong patriotic strain, "I am a patriot, I want to die and be reborn here/ I offer my soul, mind and body in the service of the country."
Ubo Hera Jomolhari, the second track of the album in Lhotshamkha, sung by Minzung Lhamo and Ghea Shung takes the listener on a poetic excursion as it delves into the country's pure nature and pilgrimage sites. The melodic harmony of dramnyen and yangchen is haunting. The song likens Bhutan to a sacred holy place where not only people but all sentient beings are happy. The last stanza resound the pride of being Bhutanese with unique identity under the rule of visionary ruler.
The third song of album, evocative and catchy Pelden Drukpa Gyelo, is a tribute to the royal union of His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck and Ashi Jetsun Pema. The song is sung by Namgay Jigs, Yangchen Dukpa and Pema Deki.
The fourth track of the album, Miwang Ngada Gyalpo, is a Tshangla and Dzongkha mix by Jigme Nidup, Pema Deki and Ugyen Panday. It too is a tribute to the historic and joyful union of the royal couple.
Pran Bhanda, the second lhotshamkha track sung by Bikee Biswakarma is a tribute to peaceful Bhutan.
The final track of the album is Pel Choedhen Drukgi by Jigme Nidup. The song pays homage to the tsa-wa-sum.
The album is produced by DSB Enterprises Pvt. Limited and co-sponsored by Wamling Yarn House.
The idea of the album was conceived by B P Bhattarai and coordinated by Gheasung. Recording, mixing and mastering was done by Abhishek and Mishtu.
"This is an effort to express our tribute to the royal couple and the people of Bhutan," said B P Bhattarai of DSB Books, adding that it is also a work to blend the rich culture of Bhutan.
