I think the Forlorn arena/The Tower could definitely be its own map at this point. With how many versions there are of it that all seem to take place in different areas of the place, I could definitely see all of them connecting together. Just make the 2nd gen areas the southern half of the map, and the 3rd gen, GU and Sunbreak sections the northern half. It could also make for a good endgame or late game area where many powerful monsters would appear

An environment I'd like to see honestly would be a mix of a cactus forest, rain forest, and volcano map, lots of seasonal rain and nutrient rich volcanic soil but with potentially less water retention making it a vast forest of succulents and cacti. You know, Kulve’s gold coat actually has precedent in the real world! The Iron Scaly-footed Snail naturally grows iron armor, and not just on its shell, but also its foot(who would’ve guessed, heh). The iron armor on its foot even resembles Kulve’s golden coat in shape. Kulve’s choice of gold might also be an instance of a mating display being detrimental to an individual’s survival, like Peacocks and their tails; gold is a very heavy metal, and is also the softest, meaning it provides minimum protection at near-maximum mobility cost. Something like iron might be more practical, but a Kulve that can survive while constantly carrying around what’s comparatively dead weight is much stronger and more personally capable in the eyes of potential mates.

23:10 I had thought of this as well. instead of Diablos killing Barroth and just clearing the quest, D kills B and you are faced with 2 choices. Either Flee with only the rewards you were able to carve/pickup, or drive off the attacking monster to secure the objective monsters body. So you wouldnt have to kill Diablos, but you would have to fight it enough so that it retreats. This would add a cool bit of randomness to the game while also keeping it about the hunt.

I’m quite surprised at your placement of Paolumu, but I certainly agree with everything your saying about him. He’s definitely a monster whose grown on me a lot recently (like a lot of world monsters, yes even Tzitzi) cuz really a lot of thought went into him. He certainly follows your design philosophy of make the map first then the monsters: rodent-like teeth for opening up coral trees, zygodactyl feet to grip onto said trees, a flattened tail to maintain balance as it floats, said tail is hardened and rubbery to make an effective melee weapon from above and dense “fur” to protect it from the biting winds of Legiana. Girros & Tzitzi are understandably forgettable cuz their fights were just easy, but Paolumu’s fight was rather difficult on a first run (and Nightshade caused me physical pain). I honestly think he’s a really good monster but there’s just something about him that just doesn’t make him “stick” for some reason. He’s kind of a anomaly in monster hunter in my opinion

2:34:41 Zinogre could be a coyote wyvern, which would fit with it's solitary lifestyle and would make it's symbiosis with the thunderbugs a mutual protection type of relation, with Zinogre using them to defend against bigger monsters such as tigrex and Rathalos while simultaneously protecting the thunderbugs from Gargwa 3:20:32 Did you seriously skip over Tigrex vs Gammoth? I love Goss Harag but Gammoth deserves to get that turf war first (even though we all know Gammoth would kill Tigrex)

This will occupy my entire evening, and I'm all in for it. Congratulations UHC to 2 years and many years to come! Edit: I'm now 2½ hours in and the Volvidon placement broke my heart and soul. Second edit: finished the video now, very entertaining and insightful. Regarding Tigrex vs Fatalis thing, I actually think it would take quite a bit more Tigrex than six. Mostly because Fatalis can literally go all super nova on them from a distance. Also as you said a few times that Shagaru is too generic-dragon like, I actually don't think so. Why? Because I think it's very reminiscent of classical gargoyles. Furthermore I think that the horn shape and placement as well as the wing structure set it apart very well. I agree with Safijiva though, although I always saw it as MHWs try to replace Fatalis. When it comes to the tier list in general, there are many placements I agree with. Although I'd place monsters like Volvidon, Gobul (which should be a piscine wyvern) and Agnaktor further at the top. Even Bulldrome would be higher up. Mostly because I just really like mammalian monsters. I'm very over satiated with reptilian monsters. I still don't get why the fluffy bat from MHW isn't a fanged beast either. I'd also think some monsters in general should be re-classified. As I mentioned already Gobul would be such a case, but also the Fluffy bat (I don't know it's name rip), Kirin and all the pseudo wyverns. The latter should get their own class I think. Although I'd personally place Nargacuga among the fanged beasts too. Mostly because it's extremely mammalian and has nothing wyvern like about it. It's more so a Panther-Bat hybrid. I also think Gigginox, Khezu, Giggi and the minions from Malzeno should be their own class. To me they seem like complex descendants of worms or leeches, probably formerly aquatic species, that adapted to terrestrial life style and emulate wyvern ecology to a degree because it seems to be a very successful physiological layout in the world of monster hunter. It would also explain why they like to stay in moist and dark caves because that's close to what their marine ancestors lived in as well. I personally would enjoy a Xenomorph style monster a lot, probably in that family or among the Neopterons. Something insectoid but very agile and to a degree humanoid. I'm also pleased to hear that you might cover the Xenomorph in the future as well, quite honestly, I thought you already did that xD

I'm like 60% sure xenojiva was meant to be a xenomorph-esque monster and that it molting into a pretty normal looking red dragon is part of the xenomorph style "takes on traits of the host creature" thing. It's the only way I can make sense of that six eyed alien looking cocoon thing just spitting out a plain old dragon.
@johncronk8867 Жыл бұрын
@@MisterCynic18 the Jiivas have a *REALLY* weird life cycle. They don’t even really have a proper infant stage-they sort of just skip right over it to the cocoon stage, and eventually a Xeno’jiiva comes out of the cocoon. Their extra “eyes” are actually organs that sense bioenergy, and all the weird extra flowing bits and oddly placed spikes are for passively absorbing bioenergy. Despite the apparent need for bioenergy to mature, they still eat normal prey as well. The organ in their chest that heats up the floor is the organ that regulates the bioenergy in their body, and in a mature Safi’jiiva, produces bioenergy. As they mature, their scales become less transparent, and they shed their skin an incredible amount of times. Eventually, a mature Safi’jiiva produces multiple eggs, and making one apparently takes as much energy as a Sapphire of the Emperor to do. Their life cycle is some strange combination of a metamorphosing insect, a certain ant-parasitizing wasp, a shedding reptile, that one species of lizard capable of asexual reproduction, and a few other things I can’t remember the names of, as well as a few unique twists.

I just realized that the spikes that Dalamadur has all over his body that he uses to crawl through mountainous terrain results in crags and spires which may “match” the spikes on him. Dalamadur may crawl through an area repeatedly to make a plethora of spires and crags and then lay in the middle as a sort of trap where he may surprise unsuspecting flying wyverns and elder dragons that pass by overhead that think it’s simply part of the spiky terrain. As for how it evolved the way it did well there is the “Monster Hunter world coming out of an ice age” theory that you brought to light, so the ancestor to Dalamadur may have hunted prey that is now extinct and is therefore much less common than before. With larger prey, they may grow to larger sizes, and with the Dalamadur that makes the rotten veil seemingly having two smaller ones in it that it likely ate implies that they may cannibalise their own young, so they may have evolved spikes to avoid interspecies predation from older individuals. With their larger size and spikes that adorn their body they may have adapted to the decreasing monster populations from the warming climate by using these traps to catch prey that normally would be able to avoid it with ease. That’s my theory as for how he came to be, although it’s probably not that plausible for it to be that size though, doesn’t stop him from contending with Fatalis and his bleak symbolism for my second favorite monster behind tigrex.

I’ve been saying the exact same thing about a potential cave map! I’m thinking that spelunking could possess similar mechanics to underwater combat, in that you have a limited supply of fuel that you have to constantly burn to see anything at all around you, and you would have to go back to camp or your cat would have to give you fuel. Maybe there are areas built to dock torches in? Your cat would probably hold your torch in the fight. Maybe there are “sanctuary areas” that have bioluminescent glow worms that light the room for you, but only in certain areas.

I’d be careful about how you implement that depleting fuel source; if it’s too punishing when depleted, you’ve essentially put a time limit on players’ fun; if you make it not influential enough, people won’t bother with it; if you make the amount of available too numerous or sparse, it’ll either never turn off or be a hassle to keep active. In a best case scenario, it’s not mandatory, but still influential on the fight, and keeping it alight is part of the challenge, but not annoying or disproportionately difficult.

Damn there's a big difference in design opinions between a biologist and an art student. Also I want to share my takes/"refute" your takes (I'll keep it briefly); Blagonga: It isn't that he's is hard, is more that the games make it hard, since he's a fast monster with hard hitting attacks in low rank, and in games were the player movement is clunky Magnamalo: Make it a predatory armadillo Athal-Ka, dalamadur and monsters with similar takes: Sometimes having a flash and cool monster is not a problem, as I said if people aren't biologists, it won't matter for them that the monster isn't grounded on reality, what will matter is their design and fight, not its ecology. Ideal fake monster: A jungle spider, that places pitfall traps. Also while we're on it, make temnocerans and neopterans 1 single class Great dragon war: It would be cool if it was canon tho Uragaan: I don't get why people keep saying its gravios but worse, it has nothing to do with gravios other than having the same ecological niche Map I'd like: Basalt shore, with a portion of the map being the shore, and the other a cavern Deep sea map: T H A L A S S O P H O B I A Zinogre: If he isnt a wolf, then what is he. If you would take a random person to say what zinogre is, they would say he's a canid. Okay so i'm never going to finish the video, so my takes end here

If youre looking for suggestions on games to cover, would love to hear your thoughts on morrowind's ecology! From both the third installment and the online elder scrolls :D Also would love to pitch in a bit on the open world possibility. I think small towns should normally not have loading screens, as monster attacks can be interesting emergent gameplay, with aspects of town defense of nearby guild hunters be interesting. Then as to not abuse this, driving the monster off is the end goal with kills not being lootable due to the guild/town getting it. Also i think that returning to fight a monster previously fought was one of the coolest things with elder dragons in the earlier games. And i think this type of gameplay could be expanded upon and supported to make a slower and meaningful open world "realistic" combat. Breaking parts would be extremely rewarding, as you both heal up a bit after, the monster would still be at a disadvantage in the next encounter.

I love more non-typical monster designs, and where it's kinda "ugly" from normal animal prospective, I find this trait one of it's main gimmicks for me. I was so hyped, when I heard about it's presence in the World (cos Tri is always behind the platform-wall for me)! His back being made in rocky plateau-like pattern and giant chin, which it uses just like a hammer/mace, being this earthquake mascot before Shaara... I dunno, how to word it exactly (according to english being not my first nor commonly used for long verbal descriptions language), but these traits have great charm for me. Uragaan is so alien, and in the same time simple and believable (as long as rocks can be a constant food source), I really like it. It needs no superficial powers nor crazy acrobatic moveset for being dynamic and menacing enough. In general I always into visually bulky monsters, cos they look mighty and somewhat cute for me at the same time. Between Akantor and Ukanlos I'll always prefer second one, cos it feels more unique for me, being giant shovel shark-whale of the North, and not just loud giga lava lizard with huge fangs (sorry, if trigger). I like Akantor, and did more so, when I was a kid, but now this just goes too close with Nergigante for me, who I can describe as children ultimate dragon dream: nothing unique or new (as simple, as most kids can think), nothing extravagant - just ultra-regeneration (cos nearly invincible), spikes for the Spiked God, giant horns (cos, you know, horns & spikes = peak of coolness) and eating the top baddies, cos he's THIS powerful. As I commented earlier, Nergigante = Magnamalo, but without it's own visual theme (and so more grounded and believable in this regard). I think, that one of his more visually grotesque early designs with Gore skeleton and 6 limbs for tearing Elders apart, being this metaphor of the "Great Devourer", could make him more memorable, than his bullshit nearly instahit additional moves in Arch-Tempered variant. But I moved off the main topic quite a bit... I really wish, that we could have more Uragaan, Graviois or Duramboros type monsters in MH6. This can benefit in many ways for me personally, but also for all "herbivores/notmeat-ivors can be fascinating and fearsome too" takes, which I'm wholly up to. My favorite real non-extinct animals are rhinos and hippos, so this fact can make all things more clear. And if we can get something Gammoth-like, but rhino or hippo based, I'll be very happy. Just wanted to put a mark from maybe existing "Uragaan enjoyer" community here :) P.S. And I want for Radobaan not being so easily unbalanced and knocked down while spinning, cos that makes it's offensive behavioral pattern also it's the most weakened one (which is a lil' dumb)

Also, main reason why people love the 3rd Gen Greats They all based on the Dilophosaurus, the REAL LIFE Dilophosaurus Great Baggi funnily enough is the 1:1 scale to Dilo, just a Medium sized Dinosaur bigger than a Man

I feel like the best way to get Magnamalo of of bottom tier is to simply make him a herbivore. Just that simple change would *kinda* explain why he has all the crazy "attachments" Edit: I still doubt he would get past flawed though
@Spyno41 Жыл бұрын
I feel like magnamalo should also be an insect too. As it would kinda explain that once they are done with metamorphosis, they're only mission is to find a mate and they developed those excessive traits to not let literally anything stand its way to get the bussy.

I always interpreted Brachy's blast slime as a bit like a snake's venom, like how it was used on the Uragaan in its IB cutscene. It could also help process thickly armored carcasses like those of Gravios or Uragaan with minimal effort, since Brachy itself doesnt need to put much work into making the explosions, since the mold is doing it. I never thought about how his shell armor was on the wrong side of him, and how restrictive the dildo horn would be to its feeding, so overall I think he's quite good, just needed more consideration on some of the physical design
@reallycantthinkofausername487 Жыл бұрын
However, the theory that that the armour is placed to protect from other Brachydios for mating rights or just intra specific combat is now one I subscribe to

Nice video, agree with lots of your ranking, and heck i like Zinogre, but the fact he's a clear Dev favorite iritates me, and Magnamalo feels like a parody of him
@ceratojira9 ай бұрын
Tbf Zinorge is THE most popular monster in the series, so of course he's gonna get alot of love. But I agree with Magnamalo being a cheap knockoff of Zinogre

I'd be interested to hear more about your refrigerator elder dragon idea. I wanna take a crack at some kind of design for the concept, limited though my skills are, just for the fun of it.

Bright moss could be buffed to provide more light, and They could bring back torches and we just throw them out like flares to light up the terrain while we fight. If the environment is flammable it'd be irresponsible but oh well.

I'm taking issue with giadrome, that was my first ever boss music monster in 2009 and I love him Congrats on 2 years aswell! I can certainly say that when little 9 year old me was playing monster hunter and trying to work out how all these animals lived I never thought someone else would actually take it seriously!

Aknosom hides one yokai aspect which is bosan, with blade like wings, fancy red coloring, the ability of breathing fireballs and lives mainly in bamboo forest, the crane aspect might be from a ancient Chinese saying of crane standing among chickens, while the original bosan yokai is chicken based. So maybe not an hopping umbrella but “monstrous bird”. I changed my view on them after I learned these and hopefully you could move him up one tier 😂😂😂
@jonesrizal8981 Жыл бұрын
I still want aknosom to be water monster though, Fire Monster in MH series has already overrated and we have already fire bird monster in Yian Kut-Ju

i guess the wond from clutch claw shod be implemented in broken parts, break a part, its a wond, takes extra damage. and shey could try a mid term betwen wirebug and clutch claw, go a bit more grounded aattack on titan stile on the monster, not fly around, but hancor on the monster and nearby objects to close the gap or run away of an attack

What about some Dragon's Dogma creatures? I like how they put greek myths into a more medieval setting. Cyclops based on perceptions of elephant skulls are a stand out point. I also love how the saurians and goblins are parallel with humans in technological and magical development, just delayed. Saurians are stone age, goblins are iron age, humans are in the middle ages.

Actually. The idea of monster taming could contextualize the egg delivery missions as they want to try and tame them as babies. It still wouldn't change the hunting aspect. Since the hunter are there to control the environment from invasive species and untamable monsters

41:30 my first thought for a chameleos subspecies would be maybe instead of just poison he could use any status effect. He'd change the status he gives based on fruits he eats, similar to other monsters. His color would also change depending on what status he's currently using

Had this idea for a monster, it would basically be a kakapo, cockatoo and matador mix, forest dweller, green and shaggy, low to the ground, would look friendly at first, you'd mostly encounter it scraping the ground for bugs and roots; in rage mode it would look more scary standing upright, almost like it's looking down on you, with one of it's wings covering most of the body. First part of the fight it would do slow rushes and claw attacks with you, keeping its body mostly in the same shape, when it enters rage mode, it would pull out it's wings - huge, feathery and with big straight claws - it would start jumping and hoping trying to stab you while hiding what attacks its planning to do. It's strong attack would be un uppercut sending you flying into the air, it would then dive bomb you when you hit the ground, you can roll it if youre good enough. Thoughts?
@unnaturalhistorychannel Жыл бұрын
I like it - nice way to diversify the bird wyverns further and the shaggy forest hermit looks fits for a kakapo monster

So I was listening to the part about the more you hunt a species the tougher the species gets, and I thought, isn't this a perfectly diegetic/in-universe desire sensor and balancing mechanic? If you want a specific monster material, you hunt the monster often, but as you hunt more, the monster becomes tougher and rarer, which will discourage you from hunting it further. Even if you're that good at hunting, the level of the materials will be above what you're trying to craft, and the hunt will be more of a grind because of the monster's high HP and your weapon's low damage output. So naturally, you shift to other species while you let your target species recover, after which point you can start farming for materials again.
