Caleb Ennos I meant that when they won the big west tournament against LB in Hawaii they did the broshake/hug combo. Actually it was LB who initiated it by coming over to Hawaii’s side of the court. But when Hawaii lost to LB in the NCAA championship, Hawaii didn’t reciprocate the same sentiment and instead stayed on their side of the net and just the did “good game” handshake. There were a few Hawaii players who attempted to reciprocate it by going over to LB’s side of the net, but when they saw that no one else was doing it, they went back to their side of the net and did the lame GG handshake.

This match showed that Shewert doesnt have what it takes to be an effective setter against a better team like BYU. Which is weird because against the junker teams he was performing better than Thelle. But Thelle was the far better and more effective setter in this game. He needs to stay on the court if he's going to continue playing like this. Get Brett off the court. If they want to win the NCAA championship, they need to keep the team that played the last 3 sets because that was the team to get it done. Especially Chaz, he was amazing. More so than Cowell was against them last night. And they need to get even better because this was a very close game. Too close for comfort. They cant always depend on the home crowd to help them pull out the win against better teams like this. But i think the biggest factor that got them the win tonight was Thelle. His sets allowed Rado to perform at his best. And Gasman...NICE SERVE!
@calebenos8084 жыл бұрын
I think Shewert had promising moments this season but both these setters are very young and need more collegiate playing time experience, especially Shewert.. Chaz was incredible and making.a case as one of my favorite players this season. Great win!
@aidangayadeen41864 жыл бұрын
word. It's very interesting they have very different styles of setting and at the start of the season Thelle was playing like a Under 18s level setter. But he's clearly been talking with the players, working things out and working on his own sets by himself. And his serve is not only deadly but also seriously consistent. Humler has also seriously stepped up defensively he's on points but he's taking riskier swings and his blocking game is on point. Cowell gets a pass because he has the recurring calf issue and having recently had a strained calf myself that put me out of play for a bit i know it's nigh impossible to perform with a calf issue. Not to mention the commentators saying he's basically got the flu. Galloway really stepped up to the plate and filled his shoes well. Played seriously well. Gasman did what Gasman does. Hawaii cleaned up all their errors from the night before. Sheward is a very good setter who'd start for most unis don't get it twisted. I feel like he just crumbled under the pressure where Thelle's experience with the Norweigan national team and playing in the leagues in Norway allowed him to keep a level head in a high pressure scenario. He's clearly also had some long convos with rado about what he wants because he was feeding him like shit first few games.

One of the best games I've seen in a while, what a comeback!! Thelle definitely made a huge difference. Brett can be more effective against weaker teams but when you're up against a powerhouse like BYU you need someone who can block, serve and set. Chaz did a great job filling in for Colton and put up an amazing fight against BYU. This was way too close for comfort (if Gabi had got any of the serves he missed in then this would've been a different game) so Hawaii might have some thinking to do about their lineup and strategies. Still what an exceptional team and exceptional performance! Go bows!!!

This game was the emergence of Jakob Thelle and UH taking it up a notch. They lost the previous match to BYU because Shuard was setter. As he was starting for the first game, they lost to BYU again. He was too predictable and UH was getting blocked. Thelle came in as setter in second set and you could see the difference in how the offense ran, they lost 2nd set but closer. Then in the 3rd and 4th set we started to see the team that won 2 National Championships in a row. Thelle took them to their 4th NC in a row but they lost to UCLA as they couldn't answer that one player. Shuard left the team this year and is now the setter for UCI.

Shewert is a much more consistent setter but less willing to take risks. Thelle can go over on 2 or launch a back set to Rado on the right when he is running all the way left BUT he still has problems connecting with the middle. Shewert was NOT the reason they lost yesterday, but going to Thelle was the right choice today. Hopefully Coach Wade can manage knowing which setter is appropriate for each opponent moving forward.
@Vballer194 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking as well! I disagree when saying that Brett is a bad setter because when the entire team couldn't connect with Thelle, Brett proved to be an amazing sub, especially with the middles. How I see it, Thelle can only connect with Rado. Brett can connect with both middles, Colton and Rado. Brett does lack blocking, I will admit to that.
@locomojoboy24 жыл бұрын
Stephanie R I was surprised that thelle was actually able to score 3 points going on 2 like that. Every time he’s tried that in the past it only worked on junker teams. For better teams they saw it coming a mile away and were easily able to block or receive it. I’m surprised that he was able to knock it out 3 times against BYU.

That fourth set was crazy! Whether or not bringing back that 90's-style rotation was intentional, it caused enough confusion on BYU that it gave Hawai'i the set (but only as a squeaker). If it was intentional, I think the coach is really smart, not unlike Vladimir Alekno who moved his giant middle hitter Dmitriy Muserskiy to opposite in the third set of the gold medal game of the 2012 Olympics. I still think that BYU is the team to beat, because all their wing hitters are reliable. It's like this year's BYU is last year's Hawai'i. I think that Hawai'i should also try running slides with Guilherme Voss like Solbrig last year. That might be enough to rattle strong teams like BYU.
