From Painters Basin that’s the exact route we have planned for this year. I’ve been all over the Uintas but have not done the UHT. It was cool to see Chain Lakes and Atwood. Almost same day, exact camp locations too, so it was a nice preview. Strong work! Thanks for taking us along. 🙏

I’m soon to be traveling out to Utah from Alabama to hike the Uinta Highline and your video is one of the best I’ve watched. Thanks for the descriptive edit ! - JBEN⚡️HIKES

Really nice music selections. Your stills are gorgeous and I really like the slow panoramic sweeps at each high point.

This is a very well done informative video. Thank you so much for putting the time into this. My wife and I are heading out to do this the 29th. Your camera work makes me feel like I’m already there!

Was it difficult to follow the trail?
@perrytaylor63885 жыл бұрын
The western half is not bad. There are stretches through some of the big drainages like Yellowstone River and Oweep Creek that have multiple paths so it can be confusing. Where are you going to start and end ?
@justinellison41175 жыл бұрын
I think we are going to do your exact route but starting on the west end and heading east. Thanks a ton for your reply and the info.

Great footage, and excellent narration. Thanks for posting. Did you guys see any Elk, Deer, Moose?

James Dudley - Why thank you. Actually on this trip we only saw a couple of elk.

I have big plans for the Colorado Trail this year, but due to fires, etc....may do a Highline Trail thru-hike. I watched an old youtube video from 2013 and at that time the trail was hard to find and navigate. Is this still the case? Your video shows a fairly well traveled trail in most parts. Thanks for a quick response.

Hello Jim. It depends on where you are going to start/finish. A popular starting point on the east end is at Chepeta Lake. From there the trail is pretty well marked with cairns and occasional trail markers. If you start or finish any further east then it can be a bit tougher. We started our first leg of the Highline at the extreme east end of the trail at McKee Draw off of US 191 in the Flaming Gorge Area where the trail is much less developed. In any event I would never attempt any of this back country travel if you don't have maps and are good with a compass. I used GPS for a lot of the trip having created routes using maps and satellite imagery. Personally I would never go without some kind of GPS. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I plan on using my phone with Caltopo maps I'll create along with map and compass for back up. Great video, by the way. Thanks for sharing it with us all.

You know the high Uintas well. I'm planning an E-W hike and have opportunity for drop off/pickup late July. The Chepeta and other snow sensors are showing 4-5 feet right now. What is your opinion as to the possible snow depth by July?
@perrytaylor63885 жыл бұрын
Mid to late July is usually doable. The place to watch is going to be Dead Horse Pass which is north-facing. Check the backpacking web sites like backcountrypost.com for early reports when we get closer to the area opening up. Also consider checking in with the ranger stations who sometimes have Intel from their back country rangers.

Thank you for sharing! Such a gorgeous area. Love your commentary as well as your explanations. What was your favorite section or day on the trail?
@perrytaylor63885 жыл бұрын
Hunky MrB - Glad you enjoyed it! My favorite of this trip was probably day three. Got to summit King’s Peak which had been a dream for many years... and better yet with stellar weather.
@lazylearner9675 жыл бұрын
@@perrytaylor6388 Yes, the weather going from Painter's Basin to Kings Peak seems to vary GREATLY. You got lucky to have no threat of storms while on top.

What food wood you recommend for this hike? Maybe freeze dried Mtn. House, energy/protein bars, some fishing, and water found on the trail and filtered?
@perrytaylor63886 жыл бұрын
biggrex We did Mountain House for dinners. The rest was nuts, Hershey bars, Payday bars, string cheese, licorice, etc. Basically anything high calorie, high fat that is lightweight. Plenty of water along the way. We didn’t take time to fish on this trip... most of the time was on the trail.

Hi Perry, I don't have a GPS only map and compass, but I'm not savy with the electronic technology. I'm worried about navigating the Uinta Trail, the whole 100 miles starting in Vernal. I need some advice from a veteran, it the trail Vernal is obvious enough with a map and compass or should I invest in a GPS and find some way points to check. I am not sure where to find accurate way points for this trek? thanks, Doyle
@perrytaylor63884 жыл бұрын
Doyle Smith I assume you have a mobile phone? If so I’d recommend an app like GaiaGps to use for navigation . You can use it in airplane mode which uses very little battery. The eastern end can be a bit tricky but by about Leidy Peak you should be okay with a map and compass. I personally wouldn’t do the eastern end without some kind of GPS-enabled device.

Are those lakes very deep?
@perrytaylor63886 жыл бұрын
Most tend to be fairly shallow but some are deeper, especially those that have had impoundment improvements added by the CCC and other agencies
