Great interviews ! I believe everyone saw it as Martha and the Vandellas " a group " ...Annette, Rosalind and Betty too ! The original Vandellas ( Annette and Rosalind ) from 1962 - mid 1964...then Betty replaced Annette...joining mid 1964 thru 1967...Martha should really rethink her statements ( I've been a fan of hers for years going back to 1963)...the Vandellas voices and harmonizing is legendary and should never be minimized... May the group live on and more power to Martha, Annette, Rosalind and Betty...in closing Nelson George is right after @ late 1967...nothing really hit the charts ...however if one listens to the 1966 album " Watchout " ...there are at least 3 to 4 additional songs besides " I'm Ready for Love " and " Jimmy Mack " that could have hit the charts and done quite well !

That's tacky of her. I like Martha. But much prefer her with the Vandellas. Especially earlier line ups with Betty, Annette and Rosalind. Just like The Supremes. Love Diana but prefer her as a Supreme.

Martha said they weren’t a group?! Girl bye 😒. She needs to stop acting brand new. Even though this is an old interview, she still has a tendency to shade the Vandellas and dismiss their contribution to the GROUP. Martha was never known as a solo artist, and even the songs she sings today, even though she sounds a mess, are mostly comprised of those she recorded with the Vandellas.

All i am saying is I go with Martha i have seen the proof that what she said is true! Plus Martha has had solo numerous albums and shows can any Vandella say the same!I believe The Vandellas did their job and well but they were background singers that all!

@@shawnbaldwin1896 Roz and Annette will readily admit that they don’t consider themselves to be lead singers. However, that does not diminish their contributions to the group. And although Martha has released solo albums, she was a member of a group until 1972. When the public was buying records and going to shows, they were going to see a group and not just Martha. Martha’s career after 1972 when Martha and the Vandellas disbanded is none of my concern. My concern is prior to 1972, and Martha was a part of a group with Annette, Rosalind, Betty, Lois and Sandra.

Sometimes it's best to listen to the whole interview before we should judge. Media can be misleading by cutting parts of an interview and give you a negative or positive opinion about someone. In this interview Martha does sound very cold towards the Vandellas. Rosalind, Annette and Betty are more group orientated. When I listen to Jimmy Mack, Dancing in the Street or Heatwave I don't enjoy hearing her a cappella. But when the Funkbrothers and Vandellas/Andantes are added the songs sound fantastic so yes for me it's the group. Do remember that stories about Motown girl groups in general change over time. Biographies, old interviews, tv documentaries and even members of that particularly group all give contradicting information. Listen to an old interview from 1966 on American bandstand where Martha personally says the success was a group effort (writers, producers etc). Another interview, with Martha, about where the name Vandellas came from on Ready Steady Go contradicts with what she has been saying more recently. The Vandellas even give a completely different story! Thats enough moaning from me today lol.

to be fair it's messed up for Martha say that about the Vandellas,especially since if it wasn't for Rosalind and Annette along with Gloria Williamson helping her sing back up for Marvin Gaye on "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" her and Vandellas wouldn't have been signed to Motown in the first place.

@@1talldaddy It was pretty messed up indeed. She doesn't give the Vandellas any credit in this interview. I know the group is called Martha and the Vandellas but wonder if Martha ever gave the Vandellas some lead opportunities like maybe an album filler or some lines on stage. Tony Orlando and Dawn often had, Thelma or Joyce, sing a song on their LP's. Even the Supremes, in the beginning, had the occasional Mary or Florence sing a song. But I've never heard Rosalind, Annette or Betty sing lead.

@@TYK1986 but something that is really telling about Martha.is that her personal favorite Martha and the Vandellas song is "My Baby Loves Me".a song with no Vandellas on it",so it's not that surprising she would say something like that.

@@1talldaddyThe Vandellas sound good on their live version, of My Baby Loves Me, on the Mike Douglas show. It's not really my favourite song by the group. There's a video from last year where Martha was singing dancing in the street with Annette and Rosalind so hopefully she has changed her view, since that interview from years ago, about the input of the Vandellas.

@@TYK1986 they certainly did sound great.and you have to give Rosalind and Betty credit because not many people can sing seven people (males and females) parts so effortless.and if they are getting an award she has no problem singing with Rosalind and Annette..lol
