It's kinda funny that Damon and Affleck are used as an example. They were trained to speak like that. Their native New England accent is non-rhotic.

Thank you very much for the video. May you explain the difference in sound placement, because from what I know you can follow all the guides you mention but you will only sound weird or fake if you dont know exacly where sounds are formed in the mouth in the different accents. Long time ago I read an article about pronunciation and it said general american accent sounds are formed at the front of the mount while RP is at back of the mouth expanding the cavity or sth like that. Then it is not clear enough because other sources say exaclty the opposite. Please if you could clarify this, and thank you again for the great material you make.

Hi Sabrah and thanks for another great lesson! In particular I loved the fact that you went for the US accent without apologizing in advance for not being great at it. I follow many English teachers on YT and most of them, when it comes to say something in an accent different from their native one, always apologize for their bad "other" accent. First of all, they're supposed to be talking to non-native English speakers who are probably having quite a hard time grasping the differences, let alone noticing if a specific pronunciation is perfect or not. Second and most importantly, even though an English teacher is not perfect when speaking in the "other" accent, they'll be way better than any learners watching their lesson, thus resulting discouraging for the audience. I understand that it comes from a form of humbleness and maybe it's just me, but I find that a little bit odd anyway.

Very nice video! One aspect of American English you might add is the pronunciation of "t" at the end or in the middle of words. For example, "I love eating butter, but it isn’t good for my heart." You accurately reflected how we change the "t" to a "d" sound in "eating" and "butter," but the pronunciation of "heart" would sound a lot more American with a glottal stop at the end instead of a hard "t."

I sometimes keep wondering whether Leila made the right decision moving to the sunny Portugal! Is she not missing the old good Blighty, the rain, the grey sky, the fish and chips, the pint and a fight at the local pubs 🤔 I do hope she hasn't regret that.
@fabrice9252

👌The part I liked most is 'the pints and a fight at the local pubs' Made me laugh so much! 😂 Now that is a true issue indeed. You pose the interesting question of the attachment to one's roots. After that I guess it might depend on people. Some will happily leave all and without regret for a sunny place. Some other, despite wanderlust and desire for sun, once left, will more feel nostagia at some point due to that part remaining behind and deep in their heart. Unfortunately, you can't have your cake and eat it too ...

Hi my Sabe, my dearest and my one and only English teacher! 😊🙏💞 (my 1st one at least ;-) I have a problem Sabrah. Both accents are performed by you and thus, I adore both of them. I also have the problem as I probably told you already that my way of speaking has shifted and somewhat become a mix of the two because of the numerous american sources I watch... Especially, I pronounce more and more rhotic 'r' unconsciously and a bit to my despair Now and to be fully honest, nothing can beat a British accent to me. I find it more soft, mellifluous and sensual especially by You, Anna or the newcomer and wonderful Katharine. You are so belle. Summertime kissed you so gently and that tanned complexion looks absolutely fab. on you! 🤗 Great video Sabrah! 👏👏👏🙏 Merci beaucoup ma Belle, thank you so much, I love you, more than I could ever say, bisous bisous 😘💞🌹 ❤

~~~~~~ Murmuration ~~~~~~~ If you could ever equal, O my lyre, The sweet hum of wings of the soft zephyr That stirs the branches, The murmuring waves that caress these shores, Or the long cooing of these plaintive doves, Playing on edges; If, akin this reed that a blest breath livens, Your strings could exhale this sublime language, Divine secret of skies, That, in the pure realm where only spirit soars, Loving angels speak together without words, Like the eyes to the eyes ; If from your sweet voice the subtle harmony, Softly caressing a soul blossoming To the breathing of love, Would rock it softly on vague images, As the heaven's wind makes the cottons fleet In the orange of dawn : While on the flowers my lover's slumbering, My voice would whisper softly in her ear Sweet sighs, beautiful chords, Pure as ecstasy where her gaze plunges me, As sweet as the sound that a dreaming carries From ineffable shores! Open your eyes, I'd say, O my only gleam Let me, let me read within your eyelid My life, your loving heart! Your languishing gaze is dearer to my soul Than the first glimmer of the heavenly torch To eyes deprived of light The gentle whimper of her breathing breast Blends with the plaintive chant of the sighing wave In harmonious tides; Her eyelashes' shade, lifted by the breeze, Flutters as lightly as the shade of a dream Passing on her eyes! The ear hears nothing but a wailing wave Which, like a long kiss, murmurs on its edge, Or the voice of zephyrs, Or the cadenced sounds Philomela moans, Or the rock's echo, whose one sigh mingles With our own murmurs. And when the death comes, with other loves followed, Snuff out with a smile our lives double, One and the other torch, Let it lay my bed just right next to thine, Let your faithful hand still be kissing mine In the bed of the vault. May we pass serene on this earth, in the air As one sees in fall a solitary pair Of swans in amor Leave, as they embrace, from the nest that joins them, And to the mild climes they seek together, Fly away two by two. F. 08/27/23. 🦢🦢😘🌹❤
I would like to ask you something Sabrah. I'm thinking more and more (as I haven't yet) of reading 'Wuthering heights'. Have you read it yourself? (my guess is yes) and would you recommend it to me? One of the reasons are the critics I read about it and I am fascinated by the fact that it was written by that young woman (Namely Emily Bronte) in the middle of the nineteenth century. Another reason is my long standing inconditional love of the eponym song by the mesmerising and so talented Kate Bush whom I absolutely adore: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2LTfoB_mpmbmJY An absolute marvel (she wrote it and performed it aged hardly 18 can you imagine?) ~~ Spleen, Darkness et Tristesse ~~ When low, heavy skies are like a weighted cap On the groaning mind in prey to long boredom, And the horizon wraps around whole round, Pour us a black day still sadder than the nights; When the earth is turned into a damp dungeon, In which hopefulness, like a chiropteran Goes beating the walls flapping her timid wing And banging her head against rotten ceilings; When the rain spreading its immense grey curtains Of a vast prison mimics the iron bars, And a mute People of infamous spiders Come and stretch their nets in the depths of our brains, Bells all of a sudden jump with a fury And howl to the heaven a horrible screaming Like errant spirits without a home country Who begin to whine quite obstinately. And endless hearses, without drums or music, Slowly march across my soul; Et l' Espoir, Vanquished, weeps, and Fear, atrocious, despotic, On my leaning skull plants its sombre flag. F. 09/06/23. 🌹❤
~~~~ My familiar dream / Mon rêve familier ~~~~ Often I make that dream strange and penetrating Of an unknown woman I love and who loves me And who , at each time, neither fully same is And nor fully other and loves me and gets me For she understands me, and my heart, transparent, For her alone, alas! stops being a problem For she alone and the moistness of my pale front With her smile and her chant, she alone can refresh Is she brunette or blond? I ignore and ponder Her name? it is sonic, in my head it murmurs As the beloved's ones whom existence exiled Her gaze is that of nights, starry and deep and dark And for her voice, afar, and calm, serious, it has Inflexions of these - dear - that have fallen silenced. Verlaine (+F.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Je fais souvent ce rêve étrange et pénétrant D'une femme inconnue, et que j'aime, et qui m'aime, Et qui n'est, chaque fois, ni tout à fait la même Ni tout à fait une autre, et m'aime et me comprend. Car elle me comprend, et mon cœur transparent Pour elle seule, hélas ! Cesse d'être un problème Pour elle seule, et les moiteurs de mon front blême, Elle seule les sait rafraîchir, en pleurant. Est-elle brune, blonde ou rousse ? Je l'ignore. Son nom ? Je me souviens qu'il est doux et sonore, Comme ceux des aimés que la Vie exila. Son regard est pareil au regard des statues, Et, pour sa voix, lointaine, et calme, et grave, elle a L'inflexion des voix chères qui se sont tues. Verlaine. 09/10/23. 🌹❤

I've noticed a British tendency to mispronounce words of foreign origin...a lot. For example, I used to watch this British movie review site that kept pronouncing "Joaquin Phoenix" as "Whackin' Phoenix" until the internet gave them enough shit for it. That's only one example, but it seems rampant in the UK.

Hi Sabrah! Sorry you didn't 'like' it. I did my best for the transcript. Transcriptions in poetry as you can imagine are extremely tricky (if not impossible) The poem in French is an absolute marvel: (My second fave by Lamartine after ' l' isolement' (the isolation)) 'Tu mugissais ainsi sous ces roches profondes' (ty myʒisɛz‿ ɛ̃si suse ɾɔ_ʃə pɾɔfõd) For the beauty of that alexandrine, note the link (liaison) myʒisɛZ‿ ɛ̃si the ə of 'roches' is pronounced ( ɾɔ_ʃə) but the final ə of 'profondes' (pɾɔfõd) is hardly pronounced In general, the ə inside the alexandrines are clearly pronouced (to make a syllable) but not the final ones. It is often different in songs (especially the oldest) where the final ə are often pronounced and even exggerated a bit " Ô temps ! suspends ton vol, et vous, heures propices ! Suspendez votre cours : Laissez-nous savourer les rapides délices Des plus beaux de nos jours !" " o tɑ̃ ! syspɑ̃ tõ vɔl, e vu, œ_ɾə pɾɔpis ! (12 syll. -->alexandrine) syspɑ̃de vɔt_ɾə kuɾ : (6) lese-nu savuɾe le ɾapi_də delis (12) de ply bo də no ʒuɾ !" (6) What a beauty, isn' it? ...

To Aritratio: First of all, in addition to being derogatory, your comment is inappropriate and completely irrelevant to Sabrah's beautiful lesson. So I don't see what it's got to do with anything here except probably spit out your obvious Anglophobia. Secondly, L'Europe des Nations, the one the General de Gaulle wanted, a europe of defense, a europe of cultural exchange, a europe of coopération, solidarity and a europe of fraternity, yes. But by no means this economic europe, at least that one they have built, a Europe of a cast of white-collar technocrats, in the pay of the yankees, lobbies and finances and its procession of bewildering economic absurdities leading to increasing inflation and impoverishment of low and middle class populations and all in the name of a globalization massively deleterious for the entire planet. To hell with this Europe! F. Miterrand had already lied and betrayed us impulsing that europe along with Kohl, he betrayed the Left wing and socialism is no more today. I recall that the French also voted NO in the 2005 referendum about Europe! To which they replied: Ah, you don't want that Europe, well, you're going to get it anyway! And Sarkozy bypassed the referendum 2 years later with the Lisbon Treaty, ignoring the People's choice, so I consider that democracy is well and truly dead here, and I haven't voted in any elections since. Moreover, if an economic Europe were to be, why did we not reach out to the great people of Russia whose regime was in the process of democratization and opening at that time. That’s an interesting question... Wouldn't it have reinforced us between the two devouring monsters that are the States and now China?... And also, wouldn’t it have avoided the whole current situation with Ukraine? Who holds the reins? Who really makes the law in Europe, I ask you the question. Take a look across the pond, on the other side of the Atlantic, at Big Brother, the Gafams and Uncle Sam.... We're on the road to a mix between a nightmarish, liberticidal Chinese-style social contract and an American-style ultra-economic liberalization crap; on our way towards a dreadful Huxley or Orwell-like and transhumanist world! With an increasingly wealthy and dominant elite and poor increasingly poor and submissive ... In any case, our politicians be they allegedly from left or right today are nothing more than puppets in the hands of the lobbies, the money powers and global capitalism. Macron is a perfect example of it. The same bourgeois vermin who reproduce and co-opt themselves in the great elitist schools of France and Navarre and in particular Science Po and L' E.N.A.The perfect candidate of the System, of the rich in the nepotistic, quasi-monarchical plutocracy, now bourgeois and elitist, that France has once again become . He was co-opted and propelled by them, because whoever has the money also has the media and press (more than 90% of the press in the hands of billionaires here) ,and consequently the opinion, that enabled his rise. The elections are nothing more than a sham in which the rise of right-wing extremist parties is wanted and desired so that, in the end, the System's candidate wins! France has been reduced to a country of services, of managers, of tertiary sector. After the successive gvts relocated massively to developing and third-world countries that puts kids to work at lower cost for the rich western bastards, Macron, then Minister of the Economy before his accession to the throne in 2015, had completed the sale of the rest of our industrial flagships (Lafarge, Alcatel, Alstom etc.) to the Americans in particular... The English left. They had the balls to say 'no!' and to spit in the mug of such a europe, mainly a vassal of the States' interests, and I think they did well. I would go further and I now would call out the Frexit of my vows.

Sabrah can mimic many accents with talent and that is not so easy basically so please be kind and indulgent if she ever committed that tiny little imprecision, thank you :-)
